I Cry Aloud!

Isaiah 58 (Amplified Version)
1 CRY ALOUD, spare not. Lift up your voice like a trumpet and declare to My people their transgression and to the house of Jacob their sins!

2 Yet they seek, inquire for, and require Me daily and delight [externally] to know My ways, as [if they were in reality] a nation that did righteousness and forsook not the ordinance of their God. They ask of Me righteous judgments, they delight to draw near to God [in visible ways].

3 Why have we fasted, they say, and You do not see it? Why have we afflicted ourselves, and You take no knowledge [of it]? Behold [O Israel], on the day of your fast [when you should be grieving for your sins], you find profit in your business, and [instead of stopping all work, as the law implies you and your workmen should do] you extort from your hired servants a full amount of labor.

4[The facts are that] you fast only for strife and debate and to smite with the fist of wickedness. Fasting as you do today will not cause your voice to be heard on high.

5 Is such a fast as yours what I have chosen, a day for a man to humble himself with sorrow in his soul? [Is true fasting merely mechanical?] Is it only to bow down his head like a bulrush and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him [to indicate a condition of heart that he does not have]? Will you call this a fast and an acceptable day to the Lord?

6 [Rather] is not this the fast that I have chosen: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the bands of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every [enslaving] yoke?(B)

7 Is it not to divide your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house--when you see the naked, that you cover him, and that you hide not yourself from [the needs of] your own flesh and blood?

8 Then shall your light break forth like the morning, and your healing (your restoration and the power of a new life) shall spring forth speedily; your righteousness (your rightness, your justice, and your right relationship with God) shall go before you [conducting you to peace and prosperity], and the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard.

9 Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; you shall cry, and He will say, Here I am. If you take away from your midst yokes of oppression [wherever you find them], the finger pointed in scorn [toward the oppressed or the godly], and every form of false, harsh, unjust, and wicked speaking,

10 And if you pour out that with which you sustain your own life for the hungry and satisfy the need of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in darkness, and your obscurity and gloom become like the noonday.

11 And the Lord shall guide you continually and satisfy you in drought and in dry places and make strong your bones. And you shall be like a watered garden and like a spring of water whose waters fail not.

12 And your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt; you shall raise up the foundations of [buildings that have laid waste for] many generations; and you shall be called Repairer of the Breach, Restorer of Streets to Dwell In.

13 If you turn away your foot from [traveling unduly on] the Sabbath, from doing your own pleasure on My holy day, and call the Sabbath a [spiritual] delight, the holy day of the Lord honorable, and honor Him and it, not going your own way or seeking or finding your own pleasure or speaking with your own [idle] words,

14 Then will you delight yourself in the Lord, and I will make you to ride on the high places of the earth, and I will feed you with the heritage [promised for you] of Jacob your father; for the mouth of the Lord has spoken it.

Verse 1 - "Cry Aloud!" a loud, strong, vehement cry, when a man exerts his voice, and rends his throat, that he may be heard publicly, boldly, with intensity to a deaf people who refuse to hear. This is a cry against hypocrisy. There is an established religion that is practised but it's not from the heart. It's by mere tradition, by rote. It's a duty they perform in order to be acceptable in their culture and society and maybe they do it to feel good about themselves but it doesn't change their hearts. They are following the formalities but it has no meaning to them. It is an external form of godliness with no internal godliness. Most denominations have started with zeal for God and His Ways. Catholic and Protestant denominations began with sincerity of heart, humility and seeking after God. But all too soon, they began to develop rules and regulations to tightly control their congregants and parishioners. It seems to be a human tendency so I wouldn't be to harsh on them. We can so easily fall into it ourselves. Before you know it they have their authorized and approved prayers, songs, sermons, liturgies, holy days, dress codes, Sunday School curriculum, and behavioral measuring sticks. Some denominations didn't allow women to cut their hair or wear pants; others didn't allow people to go to dances or movies; others declared women had to wear scarves as head coverings; others said do not drink, smoke, cuss, gamble or run around, etc. Now, don't get me wrong.... drunkenness, bondage to nicotine and drugs, filthy language, wasting money on gambling and adultery/fornication are definitely sins. Very specifically these are taught in the Bible and we should take heed and try to abstain from those things that are displeasing to God and will catch us into bondage to that sin! But we should be doing it NOT because it's the rules of the church you attend, but because we love God and want to please God.

Take for instance the sham of Lent. There is nothing wrong with the practise of observing Lent. It was to be a call to fast and pray for a time period so that you could get closer to God. But now it's become a big party before and after Lent. Beginning on or after Epiphany and culminating on the day before Ash Wednesday. Then comes the 40 days of Lent.

Epiphany means "vision of God" which falls on January 6 and is a Christian feast day that celebrates the revelation of God, the Son as a human being in Jesus Christ. Western Christians commemorate the visitation of the Magi to see Jesus, and thus Jesus' physical manifestation to the Gentiles. Eastern Christians commemorate the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River, seen as his manifestation to the world as the Son of God.

Ash Wednesday to Western Christians, is the first day of Lent and occurs 46 days before Easter. According to the gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, Jesus spent forty days fasting in the desert before the beginning of his public ministry, during which he endured temptation by Satan. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of this forty day liturgical period of prayer and fasting. Ash Wednesday derives its name from the practice of placing ashes on the foreheads of adherents as a sign of mourning and repentance to God. The ashes used are typically gathered after the palms from the previous year's Palm Sunday are burned.

Mardi Gras is French for "Fat Tuesday" and refers to the practice of the last night of eating rich, fatty foods, drunkenness and excess before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season, which begins on Ash Wednesday. And we all know about New Orleans celebrations up to Fat Tuesday or Mardi Gras.

What a terrible and disgusting way to observe what was meant to be a deeply spiritual time with God!

I remember when Stan was priviledged to go to Mardi Gras for a couple of years with a church group. They camped in a church gym and then hit the streets singing Christian songs and passing out tracts and trying to witness to those who were partying. They were trying to "Cry Aloud!", to wake people up to the desperation of their sins and point them to the One who could free them from the bondage of their sins.

Another example is those who attend the church of their choice but who really aren't believers in Jesus. It's sort of like their club, their social fellowship, a place to take their children for good moral teachings and for safe play. But Jesus has never changed their hearts. Jesus isn't important to them throughout the rest of the week. They live their own lives the way they want to and go to church to salve their guilt. How many people are drunk on Friday and Saturday night, "hooking up" (meaning having sex) with each other and acting like animals only to go to church a few times to make them feel better about themselves? Or those who are cheap and chintzy with their employees, using every legal way to exact their pounds of flesh but go to church on Sunday and act like Christians? Or they skimp on materials and lie and cheat their customers only to go to church with their noses up in the air like they are so sanctimonious? Or they beat their wives and shatter the hearts of their children but are deacons or elders in the church? Or they lead healing services while they chase women and pay for prostitutes? How many are out there?

I CRY ALOUD! I call you to repentance! I do this not from a position of perfection for I am NOT perfect in myself. I'm a sinner and I don't deny it. I've fallen so many times and daily have to cleanse my heart. But I stand in Jesus's perfection. I am saved through Jesus and my sins are forgiven through His blood! I am only perfect because He was perfect! So from His perfection and covered by His Grace, I call out to you and ask that you would turn your hearts towards Him and beleive upon Him and ask His forgiveness. You can be saved! You can be forgiven! You can have your heart changed! You can be set free from the bondage and enslavement to sins! He is merciful and loving and He wants YOU! Then your worship will be from a sincere heart.

Please don't misunderstand me. I am not perfect and will not be until I die and go to be with Jesus. I still sin, God help me! But the difference is that I believe that Jesus paid for my sins and I have accepted Him into my heart to make the changes that need to be made in me. The Holy Spirit lives in me and is teaching, training, strengthening and empowering me to do better and be who God wants me to be. It has been a true conversion, a heart change and now I love God and I want to do the things that are pleasing to Him!

A child can obey his parents if father is standing over him with a switch to beat his little butt if he doesn't obey. A child can obey his mother when mommy is standing there and yelling at him. But a child who is loved by his parents will respond by loving them back and how do you know that your child is loving you? Because he spends time with you, speaks lovingly of you and obeys you. So it is with God. God has the power to beat our butts with the discipline that we deserve but it's not what He wants to do. God can hover over us and force us to obey but it's not what He wants. He has showered us with love, mercy and grace and provided a way for us to be saved through the sacrifice of His Son, Jesus Christ. He also sent His Holy Spirit to live on this earth so we can have supernatural help. AND He has given us His Word, the Holy Bible, to reveal Himself to us. So we have His love and His help, now it's up to us to accept His love and live in His love. And just like that child, we show our love by spending time with God, speaking lovingly of Him (praise, worship and testimony) and obeying Him. We do it because we love Him not because He makes us. That is the heart change, the true conversion that I'm talking about. And how do we know our heart has been changed? By following His commands with the heart, not just legalistically because we have to.

God doesn't want our rules and regulations, our liturgies and rote prayers, our pretend worship and religious traditions! There is nothing wrong with obeying God's commands. There is nothing wrong with liturgies and prayers or traditions... what's wrong is doing them with no sincerity of heart or humility of spirit. It has to mean something to you and lead you to God or it's worthless. It has to be life changing and heart softening or it's worthless. It's almost worse than worthless because people will tend to do their religious duty and then feel like they've placated God for awhile. It relieves them of the urgency to repent.

I attend a pentecostal church and there are people who go to a pentecostal church and raise their hands and wave them around like those beside them but it really doesn't mean anything to them. They still go to work on Monday morning and see how they can best cheat their customers or their employees. How to best make money at someone else's expense. They are so used to cheating and lying that they cheat and lie while playing their golf game! They are so used to adultery that they can't meet a man/woman without trying to get them in the sack! There are literally pastors of churches who are not believers! Now, I don't mean those who are true Christians but have sinned. The Holy Spirit will get to them and turn them around in time. We aren't given a free pass by any means! But we are God's children and He will see to our discipline and repentance. NO, I'm talking about those who pretend to be Christians, who pretend to themselves and their fellow church members that they are Christians. They have nothing to do with God. God's Word goes in one ear and out the other. There is no depth, no relationship with God. Any church or denomination can have people who fall into this category. Cultural christians, social christians. But it doesn't mean anything to them in their every day life. And any church or denomination can get rigid and lifeless and legalistic until it chokes God right out the back door!

God comes in the front door when we invite Him. When we want Him. When we desire Him. When we hunger and thirst for Him! And He comes in like a breath of fresh air and like sparkling water, in a rush of love and forgiveness and mercy that cleanses and fills us. We are abandoned in our love for Him and we want more and more of Him. But then people, being human beings, begin to regulate this vast flow of the Holy Spirit! We try to contain Him, the God of the Universe! We start to control Him, the almighty and all powerful God! We tell Him what He can and cannot do! Our services are only on Sunday morning from 10:30-12:00 and it better not go past 12:00. Our worship time will include such and such songs for 15 minutes and not a minute longer, but some congregants complain that that is too long. Our preacher has to have his 30 mins+ to preach his previously prepared sermon and we can't deviate from that. We are to tithe 10% of our gross income no ifs, ands or buts. We have to limit altar time because people get tired and want to go home. The Music Minister has to have a soloist, an instrumental and 4 hymns with only the 1st and 2nd stanzas. No more, no less. We have to read a pre-approved and authorized prayer or response...... Do you see where I'm going with this? Before long, the God that burst through the front door and swept us up, has been put in a box and told what to do. He better sit down and be quiet based on our puny authority. God forgive us! But God quietly goes out the back door and seeks those who really want Him in all His Glory!!! He will not be contained! He will not be told what to do, when to do it and how it should be done. He will not be submitted to us. He will not be ordered around by us! He will not be controlled by us!

I CRY ALOUD!   DELIGHT YOURSELF IN THE LORD! Feed upon His goodness! Seek Him first! Desire Him! Turn away from your wickedness and turn your heart towards Him. He will be found if you look for Him! He wants you and if you want Him then there is nothing that will stop Him from getting to you and pouring out His love and forgiveness! No matter what you've done, He loves you!
