Summer Home Decorating

In thinking about decorating your house for summer, make a list of things that makes you think of summer and then imagine how you can use that to decorate your house.

Let's make a list:

Sea shells
Summer flowers like geraniums, gardenias, sunflowers, hydrangeas, hibiscus, daisies, etc.
Beach and patio umbrellas
Screen doors
Lake, Adirondack
Ice cream
Milk shakes

Now let's look at how some people have used these ideas to decorate their home:

I think this could be made into an attractive light fixture.

I can see this vintage straw beach bag stuffed with flowers, maybe an ivory beach towel and a beach read and left in a corner.

You remember riding your bicycles on the beach, or as a child around the neighborhood. So why not use your vintage bicycle in your summer decorating? If you have the room you can make a cute statement!

If you don't have room for the whole bicycle, why not use bicycle baskets? This is an old wire bicycle basket and you may have had a child's version or even the classic wicker bicycle basket.

Sunflowers in vases are very popular. Go to your local craft or home decorating store and buy the silk flowers that you love and make a bouquet in a vase.

You might try to use some umbrellas to remind you of parasols or summer showers or beach umbrellas.

Use a tabletop fountain or use a bigger fountain in a living room or entrance hall corner.

The slap of a screen door reminds me of summer! With air conditioning nowadays, not all of us have those screen doors. Find a vintage screen door and use in your summer decorating.

Did you go to the lake in the summer? Summer camps, boy scout or girl scout camps? Tent camping in the mountains? Then, maybe, you would like to decorate with a lake or Adirondack theme. Rock fireplaces, plaid, primitive wood, leather, fishing paraphernalia, etc.

Yes, I remember being a teenager before we had air conditioning. So fans were indispensable! I love these vintage fans and a grouping or collection can make a statement. Just remember that these aren't for use today. Old wiring and those dangerous metal blades (without sufficient finger protection) can make these too dangerous to use, especially around children.

Use bright colors like this bright yellow, white, red, blue. Notice the vintage carnival photograph in the frame?

Everyone knows ice cream is summer! Use some vintage ice cream stuff to make a vignette. Notice the old ice cream churn on this porch's wall?

How about this ice cream advertising sign with a vintage milk shake maker, a vintage ice cream churn filled with flowers and some old ice cream dishes with the long spoons and set them around the ice cream parlour set.

Wicker is not just for the front porch! In fact, any "porch furniture" can be used inside. You can hang a swing inside! You can use wrought iron, wicker, metal, Adirondack porch and yard furniture INSIDE your house.

Remember all of these ideas can work. Even if you just put a child's bright colored beach bucket and shovel on the coffee table with some sand in it, it can work. The only "but" is it has to be clean! CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEAN! If you don't keep it dust free and clean then it just looks like someone made a mess and left it. You can't have a shell box look beautiful if you don't keep it clean and shiny. A dusty wicker basket looks bad not trendy. If it's dusty then it looks tacky and messy, NOT trendy, chic, and decorated.

Tractor Show Gray, Tennessee 2011

Here are the photos that I took of the Tractor Show in Gray, TN. There were tons of John Deere, Massey Ferguson, Ferguson, Oliver, Ford, Massey Harris, Allis Chalmer, Casey, Farmall, International Harvester tractors. Dad loves to haunt the tractor shows around our area during the spring and summer. I've been to a lot with him over the years. But it had been awhile. It turned out to be perfect weather and we had a blast together. I took Persephone and she was a great companion and she got a lot of attention.

The Parade of Power

Here is little Savannah her very own tractor (our grandniece)!

The Quilt Show had some gorgeous quilts.
