Toile (pronounced twahl) is French for "cloth", "linen cloth" or "canvas". The cloth called toile originated in the 1700's in France. "Toile de Jouy" literally means "cloth from Jouy-en-Josas", a town of north-central France. Now we use it to describe a type of decorative pattern consisting of a usually white or off-white background on which a repeated pattern depicting a fairly complex scene, generally of a pastoral nature. The pattern portion usually consists of a single colour although this is changing. It reminds me of this china.

It is used in draperies, wallpaper, bedding, upholstery, accessories, etc. I did a Google search and found some great photos using toile. I tried to pick different colors, unusual uses, as well as, the normal uses. Here are the photos.

This bathroom had an old fashioned turquoise blue and black ceramic tile and yet they paired it with this beautiful toile wallpaper and it works! I love it.
