Luke 21:8 End Times

Luke 21:8 (BSB) Jesus answered, “See to it that you are not deceived. For many will come in My name, claiming, ‘I am He,’ and, ‘The time is near.’ Do not follow them.

Luke 21:8 (LNLT) He replied, “Don’t let anyone mislead you, for many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and saying, ‘The time has come!’ But don’t believe them.

Cross References:
Matthew 24:3-5  3 While Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will these things happen, and what will be the sign of Your coming and of the end of the age?” 4 Jesus answered, “See to it that no one deceives you. 5 For many will come in My name, claiming, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many.

Mark 13:4-6  4 “Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to be fulfilled?” 5 Jesus began by telling them, “See to it that no one deceives you. 6 Many will come in My name, claiming, ‘I am He,’ and will deceive many.

Many of these pretenders appeared in the lifetime of the apostles. They proclaimed they were the Messiah, False Messiahs. Josephus mentions several of these impostors:
Theudas, maybe the same mentioned by Gamaliel, Acts 5:36
An Egyptian sorcerer, mentioned Acts 21:38.
Dositheus, a Samaritan.
Simon Magus is also reckoned for one, Acts 8:9.
Menander

No evidence of men claiming to be Messiahs before Christ's death and resurrection. But afterwards, up to the time of the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple, these men did.

"It was necessary, he infers, that the true Christ should first appear and be rejected by the great body of the nation, before they were judicially given over to the delusions of the false Christs." - Mr. Greswell (quoted by Dean Manse, "Speaker's Commentary")

Boles, however, mentioned that the whole country (during those years) "was overrun with magicians, seducers, impostors, etc., who drew the people after them into the wilderness, promising signs and wonders."

These all come to our attention because they were figures involved in direct military action taken by the Romans against them. So we know about them and that they really existed and claimed to be the Messiah.

There are generally 3 layers of prophetic fulfillment. The immediate fulfillment, meaning during their lifetime. Fulfillment throughout history. The final fulfillment in the Last Days, the End Times. In this first verse of Jesus teaching about the End Times, we have seen that there was fulfillment in the time of the Disciples/Apostles. During their lifetime, the above mentioned men claimed to be the Messiah. Since then there have been many men who have claimed to the the Messiah.

Here are some False Messiah's that I found in doing a Google search. Wikipedia had a list of Jewish Messiahs that came after Jesus. I also found some that today claim themselves as Messiah or Jesus incarnate.

Simon bar Kokhba (also: Bar Kosiba) (?– died c. 135), led a revolt against Rome circa 132–135 CE. Bar Kokhba was hailed as Messiah-king by Rabbi Akiva.

The unsuccessful issue of the Bar Kokba war put an end for centuries to Messianic movements, but Messianic hopes were nonetheless cherished. In accordance with a computation found in the Talmud, the Messiah was expected in 440 or 471. This expectation in connection with the disturbances in the Roman empire attendant upon invasions may have raised up the Messiah who appeared about this time in Crete, and who won over the Jewish population to his movement. He called himself Moses of Crete, and promised to lead the people, like the ancient Moses, dry-shod through the sea back to Israel. In about 440–470, his followers, convinced by him, left their possessions and waited for the promised day, when at his command many cast themselves into the sea to return to Israel, some finding death, others being rescued. The putative Messiah himself disappeared with their money.

Isḥaḳ ben Ya'ḳub Obadiah Abu 'Isa al-Isfahani of Ispahan. He lived in the reign of Marwan II (744–750). Known as Abu Isa, he claimed to be the last of the five forerunners of the Messiah and that God had appointed him to free Israel. Having gathering a large number of followers, he rebelled against the caliph in Persia.

Yudghan, called "Al-Ra'i" ("the shepherd of the flock of his people"), who lived and taught in Persia in the first half of the 8th century. He was disciple of Abu Isa who continued the faith after Isa was slain. He declared himself to be a prophet, and was by his disciples regarded as a Messiah. He came from Hamadan, and taught doctrines which he claimed to have received through prophecy But he was defeated and slain at Rai.

Serene (his name is given variously in the sources as Sherini, Sheria, Serenus, Zonoria, Saüra, Severus) the Syrian was born a Christian. He preached in the district of Mardin between 720 and 723. Those Christian sources dependent on Theophilus's history report that "Severus" proclaimed himself Messiah; the Zuqnin Chronicle reports that he proclaimed himself Moses "sent again for the salvation of Israel". Serene promised "to lead you into the desert in order to introduce you then to the inheritance of the Promised Land which you shall possess as before". Serene was arrested. Brought before Caliph Yazid II, he declared that he had acted only in jest, whereupon he was handed over to the Jews for punishment.

Yudghan, who was called by his followers Al-Ra’i, Arabic for “the shepherd of the flock of his people.” The Yudghanites, as they became known, blended the three Abrahamic faiths, recognizing both Jesus and Mohammed as prophets. Yudghan was the last of a brief dynasty of Persian messiah claimants, a movement that was eventually crushed by the Persian army in the early ninth century.

In the mid-twelfth century, in Persia, a man named David Alroi revolted against the steep taxes imposed on the Jews by the caliphate. He united Jewish armies from Baghdad, Mosul and Azerbaijan, and together they captured his hometown of Amadia, in the very north of modern-day Iraq. Beyond this lies only legend: Alroi was brought before the Sultan, and, claiming to be the king of the Jews, was arrested. He miraculously escaped his cell, fleeing back to Amadia in one day when it should have taken ten. The Sultan was furious, and threatened to kill all the Jews under his rule. But the governor of Amadia bribed Alroi’s father-in-law, who killed Alroi as he was sleeping. The revolt was over, but a small number of Jews continued to follow Alroi’s teachings for several decades.

The cabalists Isaac Luria, founder of the modern school of Cabala, and Ḥayyim Vital Calabrese, his chief disciple and successor. Both claimed to be Ephraitic Messiahs, forerunners of the Davidic Messiah. Isaac Luria (b. 1534 in Jerusalem; d. 1572 in Safed) taught in his mystic system the transmigration and superfetation of souls, and believed himself to possess the soul of the Messiah of the house of Joseph and to have it as his mission to hasten the coming of the Messiah of the house of David through the mystic improvement of souls. Having developed his cabalistic system in Egypt without finding many followers, he went to Safed about 1569. There he met Ḥayyim Vital Calabrese, to whom he revealed his secrets and through whom he secured many disciples. To these he taught secretly his Messiahship. He believed that the Messianic era would commence in the beginning of the second half of the second day (of the year 1000) after the destruction of the Temple, i.e., in 1568.

On Luria's death Ḥayyim Vital Calabrese (b. 1543; d. 1620 at Damascus) claimed to be the Ephraitic Messiah and preached of the speedy advent of the Messianic era. In 1574 Abraham Shalom, a pretender to the Davidic Messiahship.

Another follower of Shabbethai who remained faithful to him, Mordecai Mokiaḥ ("the Rebuker") of Eisenstadt, also pretended to be a Messiah. His period of activity was from 1678 to 1682 or 1683. He preached at first that Shabbethai was the true Messiah, that his conversion was for mystic reasons necessary, that he did not die but would reveal himself within three years after his supposed death.

The last of the Shabbethaian Messiahs was Jacob Frank (b. 1726 in Podolia; d. 1791), founder of the Frankists. In his youth he had been brought into relation with the Dönmeh. He taught that by metempsychosis the same Messiah soul had dwelt in David. Elijah, Jesus, Mohammed, Shabbethai Ẓebi and his followers to Berechiah, and finally in him (Frank). Having secured a following among Turkish and Wallachian Jews, he came in 1755 to Podolia, where the Shabbethaians were in need of a leader, and revealed himself to them as the reincarnation of the soul of Berechiah. In accordance with the Shabbethaian trinitarian doctrine of the Deity, he laid stress on the idea of the "holy king" who was at the same time Messiah, and he accordingly called himself "santo señor" (="holy lord"). His followers claimed he performed miracles; and they even prayed to him. His purpose, as well as that of his sect, was to uproot Talmudic Judaism. He was forced to leave Podolia; and his followers were persecuted. Returning in 1759, he advised his followers to embrace Christianity, and about 1,000 were converted. He himself was converted in Warsaw Nov., 1759. Later his insincerity was exposed, and he was imprisoned as a heretic, remaining, however, even in prison the head of this sect (see Frank, Jacob, and the Frankists).

Moses Ḥayyim Luzzatto (b. 1707 in Padua; d. 1747), the poet, also believed himself to be a Messiah. He had early been initiated into the Cabala. Self-deluded as a result of his occupation with the Zohar, and influenced by the cabalistic atmosphere in which he lived, he believed that a divine spirit had given to him an insight into its mysteries, and at last fancied himself to be destined by means of the "Second Zohar," which he wrote, to redeem Israel (see Grätz, l.c. x. 373, note 1; idem, Hebrew ed., viii. 389, note 1). His Cabala was at first kept within a narrow circle of disciples. When the secret was revealed, an oath was exacted of Luzzatto that he would refrain from writing, publishing, and teaching his doctrines unless he went to Palestine. He returned to his cabalistic activity, and was several times excommunicated. About 1744 he went to Palestine, there to engage in his cabalistic studies undisturbed, or to fill his Messianic rôle; and there he died.

The Lubavitcher Rebbe is the latest Jewish leader to be widely considered a messianic figure, or even the actual messiah. Schneerson, who died in 1994, gave birth to the modern Chabad movement, the largest sect of Hasidic Judaism. He was widely revered for his wisdom and empathy, and he had relationships not only with many major Jewish leaders, but also with elected officials such as Ruth Messinger. Though Schneerson died in 1994, many Lubavitchers believe that God will soon reveal the rebbe to be the one true Messiah.

Charles Manson claimed to be the Messiah.

Jim Jones believed himself to be the reincarnation of Jesus Christ, Buddha and other historic figures. The Peoples Temple evolved into a cult which allowed Jones to physically and sexually abuse his followers and led them to mass suicide and murder in Jonestown.

David Koresh built a cult, known as the Branch Davidians, around himself with the belief that he was the son of God. He also was convinced that he, like Jesus, was a prophet and would die a martyr. In 1993, he and 80 people died in a fire in Waco, TX rather than give themselves up to authorities.

Sun Myung Moon proclaimed himself the messiah and had a large congregation of followers in the Unification Church that supported his claim. He even declared himself and his wife "true parents of all humanity."

Alan John Miller, a former IT specialist from Australia in his late 40s, raised brows when it was reported by Sky News that he has been attracting a following with his claims to be Jesus Christ reincarnated. Miller, who claims to have memories of the crucifixion, also says his companion, fellow Australian Mary Luck, is actually Mary Magdalene, a figure counted among Jesus' followers in the Bible.

Puerto Rican-born José Luis de Jesús Miranda, 67, not only claims to be the second coming of Jesus Christ but also the Antichrist. He and his worldwide followers embrace "666," traditionally viewed by Christians as a diabolical symbol, with tattoos as a "number of wisdom." Miranda first claimed in 1988 that he was the Apostle Paul before claiming to be Jesus Christ. He teaches that there is no sin, devil or hell.

Brazilian-born Álvaro Theiss, 65, has been claiming for more than 30 years to be Jesus Christ reincarnated although he started out in the late 60s by proclaiming himself a prophet and the French seer Nostradamus. He claims that in 1971 he heard the voice of God tell him that he was Jesus Christ, and it was at that point he adopted the acronym INRI for the Latinization of "Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews," which the Bible says Pontius Pilate had written to identify Christ during his crucifixion.

Sergey Anatolyevitch Torop, called Vissarion by his followers, has publicly claimed since 1991 to be the reincarnation of Jesus Christ. The Russian leader, 52, named his movement the Church of the Last Testament, and reportedly has 5,000 followers worldwide. His teachings reportedly reflect elements of various faiths, such as Russian Orthodox and Buddhism, and his stated goal is to unite all religions.

Wayne Bent, who also uses the name Michael Travesser, is currently serving a 10-year prison sentence for criminal sexual contact of a minor and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Bent claims that in 2000 he heard God declare him to be "the messiah," and the former Seventh-day Adventist pastor has presented himself as God's divine messenger. His New Mexico-based movement, called the Lord Our Righteousness Church, referred to as Strong City by members, was raided in 2008 by state police and Bent was arrested. National Geographic produced a documentary titled "Inside a Cult" on Bent and the Lord Our Righteousness Church, in which the self-proclaimed messiah says, "I am the embodiment of God. I am divinity and humanity combined."

One of the higher profile lords and saviors on the list, Apollo Quiboloy is sort of a big deal. Based in the Philippines, the messiah and leader of the snappily named Kingdom of Jesus Christ, The Name Above Every Name, Inc. was labeled by ABC News as "the most successful of the world's self-labeled saviors." According to Quiboloy, he was contacted by God in the mid-2000s and made aware of his destiny as the second coming of Christ on Earth. His holdings include a mansion and "Prayer Mountain," maintained by a bunch of volunteers who are each given a stipend of around $40 per week, minus the necessary 10% tithing, obviously. He claims, through the power of God, to have the ability to attract wealth and fame and to bring the dead back to life. - Grunge.com

So, now we've seen that Jesus was speaking truth. In the verse we are studying, there were fulfillments in the days of the Apostles and first churches. We've seen fulfillment throughout history, including men today who claim to be Messiah. But there is also going to come the ultimate fulfillment in the End Times. The anti-Christ will claim to be the Jewish Messiah and people will believe him.

Revelation 13:1-8  1 The dragon stood on the shore of the sea. And I saw a beast coming out of the sea. It had ten horns and seven heads, with ten crowns on its horns, and on each head a blasphemous name. 2 The beast I saw resembled a leopard, but had feet like those of a bear and a mouth like that of a lion. The dragon gave the beast his power and his throne and great authority. 3 One of the heads of the beast seemed to have had a fatal wound, but the fatal wound had been healed. The whole world was filled with wonder and followed the beast. 4 People worshiped the dragon because he had given authority to the beast, and they also worshiped the beast and asked, “Who is like the beast? Who can wage war against it?”
5 The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies and to exercise its authority for forty-two months. 6 It opened its mouth to blaspheme God, and to slander his name and his dwelling place and those who live in heaven. 7 It was given power to wage war against God’s holy people and to conquer them. And it was given authority over every tribe, people, language and nation. 8 All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast—all whose names have not been written in the Lamb’s book of life, the Lamb who was slain from the creation of the world.

These false Messiahs would appear to be authentic, expressing faith in Jesus and recognizing His role in God’s purposes. Coming on the basis of Christ’s name indicates that such deceivers are professing to be Christian. But they are false Messiahs.

Jesus will come again. He promised He would. He also promised that we, His People, would know when He comes again. There would be no doubt. As we look at the following verses in His discourse about the Last Days, we will see that He gives us what to look for. He gives us warning. He does not leave without explanations, He gives us what we need to know, no more, no less.

Proverbs 7:10-13

Proverbs 7:10-13 (NIV)  10 Then out came a woman to meet him,
dressed like a prostitute and with crafty intent.
11 (She is unruly and defiant,
her feet never stay at home;
12 now in the street, now in the squares,
at every corner she lurks.)
13 She took hold of him and kissed him
and with a brazen face she said:

Proverbs 7:10-13 (NLT)  10 The woman approached him,
seductively dressed and sly of heart.
11 She was the brash, rebellious type,
never content to stay at home.
12 She is often in the streets and markets,
soliciting at every corner.
13 She threw her arms around him and kissed him,
and with a brazen look she said,

Isaiah 3:16-24 (NIV)  16 The LORD also says:
“Because the daughters of Zion are haughty—
walking with heads held high
and wanton eyes,
prancing and skipping as they go,
jingling the bracelets on their ankles—
17 the Lord will bring sores
on the heads of the daughters of Zion,
and the LORD will make their foreheads bare.”
18 In that day the Lord will take away their finery:
their anklets and headbands and crescents;
19 their pendants, bracelets, and veils;
20 their headdresses, ankle chains, and sashes;
their perfume bottles and charms;
21 their signet rings and nose rings;
22 their festive robes, capes, cloaks, and purses;
23 and their mirrors, linen garments, tiaras, and shawls.
24 Instead of fragrance
there will be a stench;
instead of a belt, a rope;
instead of styled hair, baldness;
instead of fine clothing, sackcloth;
instead of beauty, shame.

1 Timothy 2:7-10 (NIV)  7 For this reason I was appointed as a herald, an apostle, and a faithful and true teacher of the Gentiles. I am telling the truth; I am not lying about anything. 8 Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands, without anger or dissension.
9 Likewise, I want the women to adorn themselves with respectable apparel, with modesty, and with self-control, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, 10 but with good deeds, as is proper for women who profess to worship God.

If I were to re-write these verses in my own words:
The woman approached him intentionally to seduce him. She used all her tricks including dressing like a prostitute to beguile him. She was cunning and sly. She was loud, mouthy and spoke vulgarly. She was rebellious, stubborn, unmanageable and always resistant and hostile to authority. She is always on the move looking for fun and attention, she asks for sex from anyone. When she saw this young man, she threw her arms around his neck and gave him a come-on with her eyes. She brazenly kissed him and pushed herself against him.

This immediately made me think of the Super Bowl Halftime show. Most of these shows in the past couple of decades have been controversial. Whether it was Michael Jackson grabbing his crotch and humping around on the stage or the Justin Timberlake/Janet Jackson wardrobe malfunction. I no longer watch the Super Bowl. It's a lot of hype and rarely lives up to the hype. I didn't watch it this year but I heard about it. So I found these photos of Shakira and J Lo doing the Super Bowl Halftime Show.

Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll is a Colombian singer, songwriter, dancer, record producer, and actress. Jennifer Lynn Lopez is an American actress, singer, dancer, fashion designer, producer, and businesswoman.  J Balvin and Bad Bunny both popped up in the middle of the action at the Super Bowl LIV halftime show at the Hard Rock Stadium.

In the middle of “I Like It,” with Shak slithering about the stage, BB popped into the scene, dressed like a spaceman, rapping in Spanish. The native Puerto Rican did a mashup of his song “Callaita” while Shakira performed “Chantaje,” a hit with another Colombian reggaetonero, Maluma.
As for J Balvin, the Colombian rapper came out in streetwear and goggles, as JLo literally strutted her stuff, twerking all over the singer who did bits from “Mi Gente” and another hit, “Que Calor.” - By MADELEINE MARR 2/2/2020

I'm ashamed to show these pictures but you won't believe it unless you see it. I didn't. Remember these are savvy business women who have a plethora of experience in all kinds of genres and business skills. In their real life, they would want to be taken seriously and they would demand respect. And yet, they had no problem objectifying women as sex objects in the halftime show!
 Shakira did belly dances and dancing with a bondage rope as part of her act.
This "rapper" came out with something that looked like a hijab on his head and proceeded to sing like an Arab. Shakira added a ululation with her tongue like Arab women do.
The taqiyah is a skull cap sometimes referred to as a prayer cap. It would be topped with a hijab or turban.
Notice the rapper's coat and head scarf were made to resemble the Muslim dress for men.

J Lo came out in a leather outfit riding a pole like a pole dancer.
She caresses her privates several times in the show
She rips off the leather outfit for an even skimpier outfit and begins gyrating

And here is the rapper and J Lo simulating sex with him spanking her.

Again, I'm sorry for the pictures but this was on national television during one of the most watched shows of the year in America. Both of these women didn't do good service to women. They are beautiful, they are well trained and skilled and I certainly couldn't do what they do. But they are using their God-given talents, skills and good health to degrade women everywhere as nothing but sex objects. They are teaching young girls that it's OK to act like that. And, it's not OK.

Our verses today are not portraying a good woman. They are portraying the worst kind of woman. A woman who deliberately sets out to entrap a young man to get what she wants from him. She's a user. Whether it's money, love, drugs, street cred (a reputation), a baby, protection or any other thing she perceives as a need, she's using tricks to get someone to provide it for her. There is no love involved. It's a business transaction to her. Just like Jennifer Lopez and Shakira Ripoll did. They did this obscene show and wore those skimpy costumes for the money. The more controversial they are, the more they get attention, the more money they think they will get. They don't love their fans. They don't love men slobbering over them. They just see dollar signs. So far it's worked for them. But it will hit the fan one day. Meanwhile, all the little girls and teenage girls idolize these women and think acting like that is OK. And little boys or teenage boys think all women should act that way.

These women degraded themselve in every way, even to simulating sex on stage. And they did it for money. So what is the difference between them and the Proverbs 7 woman? None that I can see. By their own choices, and by their own actions, they lowered themselves in such a public way as to be seen all over the world (via TV). You would think they would feel shame but their hearts are so hardened that they laugh at shame. But it has it's effect. One day, it will come back on them. I think of Michael Jackson and how alone he was; how his mind was gone; how he couldn't sleep; how he got so twisted; how he had no one he could trust; how he was so unhappy with how he looked that he mutilated himself with all those cosmetic surgeries... And he virtually committed suicide. Now his Neverland is empty, crumbling, and his heirs have torn everything apart to get money. It's pitiful and pathetic. He made his choices and it was for the idol of money and fame. And he paid for his choices.

We must teach our young women that they do not have to degrade themselves and sell themselves short. We must teach our young men that women are not sex objects. They are human beings who deserve respect and honor. We must teach them God's ways concerning sex. We don't want them to fall into the same worldly filth that is being pushed on them from every direction. We want them to know there is a better way, a way of love and commitment. A way of purity and devotion. A way of blessing and honor. We don't have to lay down in the mud and manure with everyone else. We were made to be better than that.

If you have fallen into the gutter with the rest of the world, don't despair. Jesus loves you. Jesus wants to forgive you, cleanse you, and empower you to walk like the prince or princess He made you to be. You don't have to stay in the gutter, reach out to Him and let Him help you up.

What is the difference between the prostitute's outfit and shoes in the upper photo and the prom dress and shoes for the teenager in the lower photo? Nothing but price.

  • The Bible teaches us not to be overly concerned with looking good on the outside but to be more concerned with beauty on the inside. What are your thoughts about that?
  • Are you spending too much money and working too hard to look good on the outside and not enough time on making a beautiful heart?
  • Are you compromising when it comes to your self respect, honor and self esteem in order to attract men (or women)? Why?
  • Are you under pressure to give in and follow the crowd into the mud pits of sin? What is attractive about it that you want? What is missing in your life that makes you desperate to climb down in the manure and wallow in it?
  • Maybe you've never had a better life presented to you. Maybe you didn't grow up in a good family or have parents that showed you a better way. Maybe you have surrounded yourself with a crowd that doesn't seem to want something better for themselves. Maybe you think that's all there is and you gotta take what you can get. Let me tell you that God has a better way of life for you. He loves you and will provide better for you than you could ever imagine if you will follow Him. There really is a better way to live.
  • Are you teaching your children the better way of God? I know you are going against a tidal wave when you try to teach your children good morals, values and self esteem. But if you try to obey God and teach your children to obey God, God will supernaturally assist you and hold you above the tidal wave of this world. He will provide. He knows exactly how to help you and your children in whatever you are facing and He can provide the way. Pray about it and trust in Him.

Una, SC

Una is part of the Una-Saxon-Arcadia, or USA, area that borders the city of Spartanburg. Una has a post office with ZIP code 29378, which opened on November 14, 1928. The Una Community Fire Department was created in 1959 through the Una Water District. In 1988, Spartanburg Water acquired Una Water. It was a Railroad settlement with a railroad yard (Hayne).

Arcadia was founded in 1902, and was so named for a fancied resemblance of its landscapes to the ancient region of Arcadia. Arcadia Mill Number Two was built on W. Cleveland St in 1922 by Dr. Henry Arthur Ligon (1856-1925)., a local pharmacist and banker who went into the textile business with Arcadia Mill Number One in 1902 located on Hayne St. He would also take over the mills at Woodruff and Mills Mill in Greenville during the 1920s. The mills were sold to NY cotton businessman, Joshua L. Baily. Knowing he could hire cheaper labor in the South, he moved his northern business South. He renamed Arcadia Mill Number One to Mayfair Mill and Arcadia Mill Number Two was renamed Bailey Mill. The mill production closed in 2001 in bankruptcy.

Here are some maps and satellite views of the area.

The Saxon Mill was organized in 1902 under the leadership of John Adger Law, a Sptbg banker. Built on Front Street. In 1945 it was sold to Reeves Bros and then, in 1964, to Phillips Fibers Co. Phillips Fibers, Phillips Petroleum Co. of Bartlesville, OK, headquartered in Greenville, S.C., makes non-woven materials used in home furnishings and other consumer and industrial applications. Amoco Fabrics and Fibers Co. bought it in 1993.

The Saxon Mill was primarily owned by "Old Man Law."  Mr. Law lived in the largest house in the village, hardly more than a block from the church. The church was within a block of the mill office. Saxon Mill owned all the houses in the village.  At a bulk rate the mill bought electricity and gas for the whole village from the power company and resold it to each household or user.  Neither the Baptist nor the Methodist churches ever received a bill for electricity, gas, or insurance.

Wilburn Philip Justice was born 11/13/1887 in Hendersonville, NC to Philip Britton Justice and Annie Cordelia Maxwell. Philip Britton Justice was listed as "Keeper of the poor" in the 1880 census. Proverbs 7:5-9

Proverbs 7:5-9 (NKJV) 5 That they may keep you from the immoral woman,
From the seductress who flatters with her words.
6 For at the window of my house
I looked through my lattice,
7 And saw among the simple,
I perceived among the youths,
A young man devoid of understanding,
8 Passing along the street near her corner;
And he took the path to her house
9 In the twilight, in the evening,
In the black and dark night.

Proverbs 7:5-9 (NIV) 5 They will keep you from the adulterous woman,
from the wayward woman with her seductive words.
6 At the window of my house
I looked down through the lattice.
7 I saw among the simple,
I noticed among the young men,
a youth who had no sense.
8 He was going down the street near her corner,
walking along in the direction of her house
9 at twilight, as the day was fading,
as the dark of night set in.

The windows were latticed. This is much like our blinds of today. They allowed for air movement but gave some privacy and provided shade. In the photo below, the "balconies" have intricately latticed windows.

In these verses, the writer is telling about something that really happened. Not just a personification, but a real example. As he is looking out his window, he actually sees something happening.

"Looking forth into the street on the throng of young and thoughtless persons passing to and fro, among them I discerned... a young man void of understanding; a fool, who, without any deliberate intention of sinning, put himself in the way of temptation, played on the borders of transgression. The way of escape was before him, as it is in all temptations (1 Corinthians 10:13), but he would not take it." - Pulpit Commentary

The translations for verse 7 are as follows:
NIV a youth who had no sense
NLT who lacked common sense
BSB a young man lacking judgment
KJV A young man void of understanding,
GNT foolish fellow
ISV a senseless young man
GOD a young man without much sense

The actual Hebrew means a youth who has nothing on the tablet of his memory, he is lacking in his mind. We would say something like this:
He doesn't have enough sense to come in out of the rain.
If his brains were dynamite, he wouldn't have enough to blow his nose.
He's a brick shy of a load.
He doesn't have the sense God gave a goose.
He doesn't have enough sense to tie his shoelaces.
He doesn't have enough sense to know when to quit.
He doesn't have enough sense to turn around.
He doesn't have a brain in his head.
He doesn't have enough sense to make his way out of a paper bag.
I could go on....

It's easy to take advantage of someone who is stupid. Why is it that teenagers are so stupid? Parents, teachers, police, pastors, doctors can all tell them not to do something, and give them the reasons why you shouldn't do something, and THEY STILL GO DO IT!!! Why?

First of all, teenagers' brains are not fully developed. They think they are smart and an adult but physically and biologically they are NOT. That's why it's up to adults to continue guiding, teaching and setting boundaries. They will get all up in your face and scream at you that they are old enough to take care of themselves. But they should be whistling in the wind because we, as adults, know they are not adults and not old enough to take care of themselves and make wise decisions. Some are more mature than others, but they are still teenagers.

Second, they don't have life experiences. They aren't old enough to have experienced what adults have. As we age, we learn. Sometimes the hard way. It's up to us to share those experiences and try to help them so they don't have to learn the hard way. Although, of course, some have to anyway.

Third, in America, our youth don't usually have to go through the hard things that kids did back in the old days. With our technology, our economy, and medical breakthroughs most don't have to experience some of the things that aged kids in the old days. They don't have to pick cotton from sunup to sundown. They don't have to lose a brother or sister to diptheria. They don't have to experience going to school only during bad weather because otherwise they have chores to do on the farm. They don't have to experience cooking on a wood stove and washing clothes all day long with washboards, tin tubs and back breaking work. They don't have to get up at 5am to feed the livestock before they go to school. They don't have to walk to school. So, thankfully, our kids haven't experienced a lot of hardness and pain kids in the old days had to deal with. We are spoiled to a more or less extent. That can be good because no one wants to go back to those hard times. But it can be bad as children age into teens with little experience with harsh reality.

This particular young man hasn't got life experience in the area of seduction and temptation. Maybe he's a rich young man who has had servants doing everything for him and he's basically simple. Maybe it's because he's experienced some mental trauma that makes him vulnerable. Or maybe he's been raised right but he is hardheaded and thinks he knows everything. He is rejecting everything his mother and father have told him and done it anyway. Maybe he has book smarts but no commonsense. There are people, even adults, who are like this as well. Many adults never grow up. They are basically still simple like a little child or rebellious like a child. When someone is that rebellious against good sense and logic, you know they aren't mature enough to make good decisions. They haven't grown up. They are nowhere near being an adult in the true sense.

Any way you look at it, this person is a walking target for unscrupulous people. They are naive. Naive means showing a lack of experience, wisdom, or judgment.

This young man walks in the way of temptation. And there is someone waiting to take advantage of him. That someone will not stop until they have ruined him in every way they can. They will take his money, his assets, his mental health and sanity, his trust, his physical health, his future. Then they will walk away and go on to the next, leaving him to try to pick up the pieces of his life.

Have you ever accidentally taken the wrong road or path and found yourself in danger and desperate to get out!?! We did once. We were going on a vacation trip. We went through the Amish country in Pennsylvania and then, using a map, went on to Philadelphia. We had the idea that we could stay there a couple of days and see the historical areas. We are big into history. Anyway, somehow, we took the wrong road into Philadelphia and we came in through I guess what you would call slums. I had seen places like this on TV but here it was in reality! Abandoned buildings, stripped cars, graffiti on everything, trash everywhere. We passed by a block of something that had high brick walls, razor wire on the top of the brick walls. All the windows of the multistory building had been boarded up. I told Stan, "That must be an old jail or prison". When we got to the entrance, it was a SCHOOL!
Anyway, we were terrified. I was so scared. Here we were naive, white, Southern American tourists and we knew we looked like a target. Nice car, white people, one was crying (I'll let you guess which one)... I mean we were fairly screaming as a target. Stan refused to stop for stop signs or stoplights. We were actually praying a policeman would stop us so we could get him/her to lead us out of there! Thank God, we managed to find our way out safely. I know that was a God miracle. And, after that, we drove straight to an interstate and left Philadelphia without even stopping. We didn't stop until we crossed the Mason-Dixon line! For real! But my point is, don't make yourself a target if you can help it.

This young man put himself in harm's way by taking the path or road to temptation. Maybe he was stupid enough to think it would be fun. Maybe he thought he could take care of himself. Maybe he thought he was flirting with danger and found it exciting.
Maybe he just really wanted to play with fire and didn't mind getting burned. Any of these reasons are not good reasons. They show a lack of commonsense, logic and maturity. He was not as grown up, and adult, as he thought he was.

Bad things happen in life. It's a guarantee you will have bad things, hard things, devastating things that come up in your life out of the blue. You can't help it. You didn't ask for it. You weren't walking on the edge or begging for it. It just happens. It comes from sinful people in a fallen world where death is the result. Sickness, death, financial hardship, loss are some of the things you will experience even if you make all the right decisions. There is no sense in asking for more trouble by making senseless decisions. You will have enough in life to deal with without adding more to your plate by your own senseless decisions and at your own hand.

You don't want to be the one that someone else uses as a bad example to teach their wayward children. That's what is happening here. A father is telling his son about a young man who makes some bad choices. This young man is a bad example. The father is using the bad example to try to keep his son from making the same mistakes. You don't want someone, one day, to point at you saying, "Don't be like that man/woman over there".

  • Have you ever made a bad decision that got you in trouble? (All of us have at one time or another.) Ponder on that, journal about it. Why did you make that choice? What were the results? Have you given it to God and allowed Him to redeem it and turn it into good?
  • Have you grown up yet? Are you making good decisions and choices? Have you got life experience, good commonsense and godly wisdom working in your life? Are you making the same bad choices over and over again? If you are, what is going on in your head that you keep making wrong decisions? You need to go to God in deep prayer and ask Him to reveal to you the root problems. Ask Him to heal and deliver you from the cause. All of us have weaknesses towards certain sins. You are no different than me, or I, than you. God calls us to fight these tendencies in ourselves and with His help! He gives us His Word and the Holy Spirit to live within us, to help train, teach and empower us to be overcomers. He also forgives us every time we repent. He loves us with the love of a Father and He has provided for us. We have to take hold of these weapons and walk in freedom from these besetting sins. When we fail, we can go to Him and He helps us back up, cleanses us, equips us and we go on. We can only find freedom through Christ and with God's help. There is no other way. And if we continue to cling to Him and trust His forgiveness and strength, we will be saved and we can even walk in freedom from the bondage of sin now. If you have made bad decisions over and over again and find yourself in bondage to some sin, fight it with God's help. You can't do it alone. Go to Him every time. Ask Him to show you the root cause and to deliver and heal you. Ask Him to help you break the habits you have formed around this sin. Ask Him to forgive you every time you fail. Ask Him for wisdom and knowledge to help you. Ask Him for revelation from the Word to pierce your heart and apply healing to the secret places. Ask Him for the strength, weapons and power to fight the battle everyday. Go to Him with all your heartaches and your failures, all you questions and doubts.
  • Are you teaching your children godly wisdom? We naturally love our children and want to parent them in the best way. Each child is unique and requires different handling. But there are basic parenting skills taught in the Bible if we will look for it. For instance, these passages in Proverbs are actually written by a father teaching his son. So be proficient in the Bible. Read it through from cover to cover at least once in your life. But don't stop there. Study it with the help of all the resources that we have at our fingertips. Bibles, study Bibles, Bible dictionaries and encyclopedias, topical indexes, maps, timelines, commentaries, scripture cross references, and how-to books on all subjects. There is also the wealth of knowledge in trained preachers and teachers at local churches. There are seminars, Bible studies, podcasts, radio programs, the Internet, etc. If you can't afford a book, go to your local library and check them out for free. In America, there is no excuse for not knowing the Word!
  • Now, let's go a little deeper. Isn't satan the one who is really tempting this young man? We know it's a promiscuous woman but satan is using her like a tool to snag this stupid young man. Satan is the one trying to destroy his life. The woman is just a worm on a hook held by the fisherman, satan. The naive and senseless young man takes the bait without seeing the hook. Can you meditate on that and write out your thoughts?
