Proverbs 6:12-19

Proverbs 6:12-19 (KJV)  12 A naughty person, a wicked man, walketh with a froward mouth.
13 He winketh with his eyes, he speaketh with his feet, he teacheth with his fingers;
14 Frowardness is in his heart, he deviseth mischief continually; he soweth discord.
15 Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly; suddenly shall he be broken without remedy.
16 These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:
17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,
18 An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,
19 A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

Proverbs 6:12-19 (NIV)  12 A troublemaker and a villain,
who goes about with a corrupt mouth,
13 who winks maliciously with his eye,
signals with his feet
and motions with his fingers,
14 who plots evil with deceit in his heart—
he always stirs up conflict.
15 Therefore disaster will overtake him in an instant;
he will suddenly be destroyed—without remedy.
16 There are six things the Lord hates,
seven that are detestable to him:
17 haughty eyes,
a lying tongue,
hands that shed innocent blood,
18 a heart that devises wicked schemes,
feet that are quick to rush into evil,
19 a false witness who pours out lies
and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.

Proverbs 6:12-19 (NLT)  12 What are worthless and wicked people like?
They are constant liars,
13 signaling their deceit with a wink of the eye,
a nudge of the foot, or the wiggle of fingers.
14 Their perverted hearts plot evil,
and they constantly stir up trouble.
15 But they will be destroyed suddenly,
broken in an instant beyond all hope of healing.
16 There are six things the LORD hates—
no, seven things he detests:
17 haughty eyes,
a lying tongue,
hands that kill the innocent,
18 a heart that plots evil,
feet that race to do wrong,
19 a false witness who pours out lies,
a person who sows discord in a family.

Strong's Hebrew 205: Strictly nothingness, trouble, vanity, wickedness, an idol

with a perverse - עִקְּשׁ֥וּת (iqqeshuth, ‘iq·qə·šūṯ) - Noun - feminine singular construct
Strong's Hebrew 6143: Crookedness of mouth

These verses are describing a trouble-making, wicked, lying person who uses every artifice to lie and conceal their evil. Not only do their mouths speak lies, but even their body language is used to lie.

John 8:44-45 (Jesus speaking)  44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out his desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, refusing to uphold the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, because he is a liar and the father of lies. 45 But because I speak the truth, you do not believe Me!

But God is the God of Truth and He cannot lie!

Hebrews 6:18 So God has given both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us.

Exodus 20:16 You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

Leviticus 19:11 You must not steal. You must not lie or deceive one another.

Exodus 23:1 You shall not spread a false report. Do not join the wicked by being a malicious witness.

Psalm 10:7 Their mouths are full of cursing, lies, and threats. Trouble and evil are on the tips of their tongues.

Thou Shalt Not Bear False Witness by Don Wilton, 11/5/2013 on BillyGraham.org
"Bearing false testimony also carries with it the basic idea of fabrication, which, simply put, means to make something up. Exaggeration fits right in with God’s prohibition because any effort to stretch the truth is, in and of itself, a fabrication. When God said, 'You shall not bear false witness' (Exodus 20:16), He was definitively pointing to the heart of man. Not even a person’s creativity with the truth is acceptable to God.

"The verb to bear implies the act of carrying or transmitting something, while the adjective false describes content that is untrue. The speaking of an untruth renders what is said as unreal, thereby rendering it artificial and invalid.

"People can be greatly hurt by this malicious form of robbery. Bearing false witness robs the victim of the cloak of truth and is closely allied with God’s command not to steal."

Matthew 15:16-20 (Jesus speaking)  16 “Do you still not understand?” Jesus asked. 17 “Do you not yet realize that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then is eliminated? 18 But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these things defile a man. 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, and slander. 20 These are what defile a man, but eating with unwashed hands does not defile him.”

Jesus was the victim of false testimony. The Pharisees lied to Caiaphas the high priest, and the Sanhedrin, charging him with blasphemy (Matthew 26:57-68).

Why do people lie?

  • To cover their own misdeeds (the ever-ready fig leaf of concealment). They want to avoid punishment, embarrassment.
  • To maliciously and wickedly hurt someone else.
  • To make themselves look better than they are. They want some kind of reward or for people to accept and think highly of them.
  • To attain a feeling of control of their lives or over someone else.
  • They actually believe it themselves because they want it to be true, self denial and fantasy.

Because of pride, many will refuse to admit they lied or believed in a lie. They cannot accept they made a mistake or accepted a mistake as true. Some people, out of pride, will deny the truth with vehemence and all kinds of justifications. They will look for evidence that leads in the direction they choose to believe. For instance. When Jesus was arrested. He was brought before the High Priest and the Sanhedrin. Let's look in the room on that dark night...

Matthew 26:3-4  3 At that time the chief priests and elders of the people assembled in the courtyard of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas, 4 and they conspired to arrest Jesus covertly and kill Him.
Matthew 26:57-61  57 Those who had arrested Jesus led Him away to the house of Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and elders had gathered. 58 But Peter followed Him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest. And he went in and sat down with the guards to see the outcome. 59 Now the chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were seeking false testimony against Jesus in order to put Him to death. 60 But they did not find any, though many false witnesses came forward. Finally two came forward 61 and declared, “This man said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’”

Mark 14:55-64  55 Now the chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were seeking testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but they did not find any. 56 For many bore false witness against Jesus, but their testimony was inconsistent. 57 Then some men stood up and testified falsely against Him: 58 “We heard Him say, ‘I will destroy this man-made temple, and in three days I will build another that is made without hands.’” 59 But even their testimony was inconsistent. 60 So the high priest stood up before them and questioned Jesus, “Have You no answer? What are these men testifying against You?”
61 But Jesus remained silent and made no reply.
Again the high priest questioned Him, “Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?”
62 “I am,” said Jesus, “and you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.”
63 At this, the high priest tore his clothes and declared, “Why do we need any more witnesses? 64 You have heard the blasphemy. What is your verdict?”
And they all condemned Him as deserving of death.

The High Priest, Caiaphas, and his buddies (the priests and most of the Sanhedrin) were looking for evidence of blasphemy against Jesus. Even if they had to get people who lied and gave false testimony! Because of their pride, they would refuse to believe Jesus was actually their Messiah, whom their own Prophets foretold. They saw Him as a threat to their status quo. They were deeply entrenched in the system. They derived their power, control and money in the current system. They could NOT allow Jesus to disrupt that. But they also couldn't be seen as one denying the Jewish Messiah. So they looked for ways to smear Him and make themselves look right. They even brought in false witnesses. But their stories were inconsistent. It takes two witnesses to say the same thing in order to convict and they couldn't find two with the same story!

Perjury is the offense of willfully lying in a court after having taken an oath to be truthful. But people today seem to think nothing of lying under oath any more. They put their right hand on the Bible and swear to tell the whole truth and invoke the name of God. Considering God is Truth and He cannot lie, how dare they use His Name and swear on His Word and then lie!

There are spiritual leaders who would rather believe a lie and preach and teach a lie than to admit they were wrong. Their pride gets in the way. These are called False Teachers. Even when presented with the truth, they cannot back down because it calls them to be humble, admit they were wrong and repent. And men (and women) don't like to be humbled and they don't like to repent.

Matthew 24:23-24 (Jesus speaking)  23 At that time, if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There He is,’ do not believe it. 24 For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders that would deceive even the elect, if that were possible.

There are many who would gossip and slander others in order to propagate a lie. They lay the seed in the fertile soil of other's minds. Then they slyly and persistently water that seed with a flow of lies so that the ideas become firmly rooted in the soil of others' minds. They take every occasion to fertilize and water that seed they planted. For instance, the theory of evolution was Charles Darwin's theory. A theory is a supposition or a system of ideas intended to explain something; a principle that has not been proven yet; a speculative idea to explain something; a conjecture. Yet, scientists jumped on Charles Darwin's theory of evolution as though it were immutable truth! Why? Because it was an explanation that left God out of creation. They no longer had to believe in God if they could believe in evolution. Since Charles Darwin's theory, every school has taught it constantly and consistently from kindergarten through higher education so that all students receive it as truth versus a theory of one man. Unless a student is taught the truth of God's Word, they will believe in evolution. They have had that lie planted and the seed tended until the majority of the educated world believes it as truth! They have concocted a whole lot of "evidence" in proof. Although some of that evidence has been proven to have been fake, scientists will still ask us to believe in the evolution theory. Even though they have no evidence of evolutionary development, they fill volumes of books up with their suppositions. Their pride is so involved, that they cannot except that they've been duped. They will not admit their failure and if anyone should question evolution, they are are derided, mocked and demeaned. There are Christians who are scientists, teachers, professors, etc. But many are afraid to come out of the closet on their beliefs on Creation because their peers would destroy their careers in order to protect their fantasy of life without God! They are afraid to speak out and say, "The Emperor is wearing NO clothes!" because they would be punished and mocked for being truthful.

Lies and deception work on a worldwide scale, as we've seen, but they also work very effectively in our daily lives. Has someone lied about you? Have you lied about someone else? Have you made up a whole scenario about something in your head that hasn't even happened? You are just so sure you are right and it's going to happen like you think it will happen that you've laid the seeds in the minds of everyone around you! Then it doesn't happen like you predicted. Can you admit you were wrong? Or will you stick to it and remain adamant because your pride won't let you admit you were wrong? Will you look for every way to justify your lie and to cover your misinterpretation? How many people did you tell this to? Would you go to each and set the record straight? Or would you take the deceptive way out by saying, "Wait and see" or even use your body language to suggest, with a coy smile and wiggling eyebrows, that it's not over and there is more to come?

I know of people who have determined a course of action based on what they believe is the right thing for them. They think they know their immediate needs and determine a way to meet their needs. Then they cover their decision with a prayer and tell everyone God is telling them to do this or that. They have a perceived need, they take a course of action which they believe will fill their need and then they bulldoze through and pretend it was God's Will. They are self deceived into thinking they were godly. They gave the appearance it was godly. But they were really just selfishly doing their own thing to meet their own perceived needs. It had little to do with God and a lot to do with self and self idolatry. I've found myself doing that a time or two and I'm sure you have too. Let's look a Bible story that shows this very well.

Genesis 3:1-6 (NLT)  1 The serpent was the shrewdest of all the wild animals the LORD God had made. One day he asked the woman, “Did God really say you must not eat the fruit from any of the trees in the garden?”
2 “Of course we may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,” the woman replied. 3 “It’s only the fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden that we are not allowed to eat. God said, ‘You must not eat it or even touch it; if you do, you will die.’”
4 “You won’t die!” the serpent replied to the woman. 5 “God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like God, knowing both good and evil.
6 The woman was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it, too.

Eve was convinced that what she was doing was godly! But, in reality, she wanted to "be like God", i.e. be God. Satan wanted to be God, Adam and Eve wanted to be God. So do all of us sinful people. We can dress it up and convince ourselves we are godly when really we are just trying to BE God. It's idolatry, pride and self deception. We can even lie to ourselves to justify what we want to do. Denial and self deception to live out a fantasy.

In our verses today, the naughty person (one of naught, nothing, worthless), the wicked person, the villain, the troublemaker WALKS with a froward or perverse mouth. The word translated as "walks" means it is a course of life, a continual and habitual thing to have a froward, crooked or perverse mouth.

"The mouth, or speech, is the vehicle by which this person gives outward expression to the evil thoughts which are inwardly filling his heart." - Pulpit Commentary

It goes on to say that this troublemaker uses his body language to continue the deceit. A liar will use all the artifices they have to support their lie. They will look at you directly, open their eyes widely, lower their brow to suggest seriousness, use their hands, lean forward, even point the finger... but it's all fake. People can become master manipulators and liars, practised in the art of lying. Politicians are trained and tutored on how to use their words and body language to promote what they are saying. It's a fake front and can be very convincing because they are trained to make it look real. Whoa to them that continually walk in deceit and who artfully use their words and body language to convince others of their lies! The Bible says calamity shall come upon them suddenly and there is no remedy. They will face destruction and ruin.

How many politicians have you seen who were great at presenting a false front. But then they were revealed for who they really are and their name is mud! They lose their families, their high position, their reputation, their power!

You can't feel too sorry for them as they've been warned all along by God in His Word. Of course, we all have sinned and we all have experienced our own consequences for our sins. So we shouldn't hop on the bandwagon to tar and feather someone who has been caught. They should lose their positions of authority, but it should be done with firmness tendered with mercy as we are all apt to be in their shoes.

But these troublemakers sow discord. They create trouble, disagreements, mayhem, anger. They stir people up and keep the pot boiling. If that isn't a picture of politics and journalism today!!!! Not only do politicians deceive and lie and stir up trouble. But journalists love trouble because it sells their stories and their media. They know just how to twist and skew something to make it look like something it's not. They are lying, deceiving, trying to get people to believe something that isn't true. But they call it reporting. A person can comment to a reporter, "The grass is green today." But the reporter sees no excitement, no trouble and therefore his non-story won't sell his article or his media (newspaper, TV, radio, blog, podcast, etc). So he tries to artfully twist a simple statement in a way to cause trouble.

"The Republican candidate for President, John Doe, had this to say about his opponent, 'His grass is green today'. Therefore Doe indicated Smith is making a profit selling marijuana."

They know how to add, subtract, twist, distort and misinterpret in order to sell their article and their media. They stir up trouble. They live on drama. They can't have harmony because that doesn't sell papers.

Next God gives us a portrait of a wicked person.

  • According to what you read in these verses is any lie acceptable? White lies? Crossed fingers lies?
  • Did you realize body language can be just as deceptive and lying as the words you say?
  • Have you lied at any time in your life? Then you have sinned. Thank God, Jesus forgives us our sins when we ask Him to and ask Him to be Lord of our life!
  • Are you an habitual liar? You need to look deep inside yourself and find why you do this. Try to identify the source and take it to God. Remember, repentance means you've changed your mind and you now see your sin as God sees it... In order to truly repent, you must come to the realization that it is sin and something that separates you from God. You must reach that point and then reach out to Jesus. You are not alone. Every one of us are sinners and must repent and ask Jesus to forgive us and save us. But it must be a real repentance. When you really see sin for what it is, you will be desperate to be saved from it. And Jesus is the only answer.
  • Have you ever perjured yourself in a court of law after swearing to tell the truth? No matter for what reason, God says lying is a sin. No sin has any justification. It is sin and therefore, only the blood of Jesus can wash it away. Repent and ask His forgiveness.
  • Is lying your way of covering up a deeper sin? Do you think that justifies lying? What is so bad in you that you must sin by lying? What have you done that is so bad that you feel lying is needed? For instance, let's say that you have embezzled money from the company's pension fund and you are lying to keep from being found out. You need to really take this to God. If you are afraid of being found out, then you shouldn't have done it in the first place. If you are found out, you shouldn't be mad at anybody else because you are the thief. The person who told on you, the policeman who arrested you, the judge who ordered you to jail... they are not the problem. Your own actions are the problem. You need to accept responsibility for your actions, you need to see the truth for what it is. You need to see your sin for the horror it is and get on your knees and cry out to Jesus! Have you been lying? Have you gotten mad at someone else for catching you in the lies? Have you attacked them because they exposed your lies?
  • Let's look at the portrait of a wicked person. I know you have a picture in your head that popped up when you read "haughty eyes". Journal about that. What kind of pride has "haughty eyes"? Why is it sinful?
  • If you notice, in this portrait, lying is mentioned TWICE! A "lying tongue" and a "false witness who pours out lies".  Think about why lying is an abomination to God and journal about it.
  • Being a false witness undermines our whole judicial system. How can a false witness hurt someone irreparably?
  • Can you think of examples of "hands that kill the innocent"?
  • God hates a "heart that plots evil". Yes, there are people who plot and plan, prepare and scheme to do evil. I was watching a true crime TV show last night and saw the story of a woman who created forged life insurance papers, forged checks and a forged will in order to get her husband's money. Then she shot him in the back of the head and claimed it was an accident as she pulled the gun out from under his pillow. And this was the 2nd time she'd done the exact same scheme because it worked for her the first time! She had killed 2 husbands for money. Come to find out, her husband had suspected her and had made a cassette tape, in his own voice, just 3 days before she killed him. In that tape he says he suspects she killed her first husband and that she was trying to kill him too. Can you think of other examples of intentional, premeditated, plotted evil?
  • What does it mean that God hates "feet that race to do wrong"?
  • Have you ever sown discord in a family? Have you ever whispered, gossiped, made a phone call and stirred up trouble within your own family, your own church family, your own community? That kind of insidious undermining is hateful to God. Making mountains out of molehills, blowing up stories, twisting words, looking for offense, easily taking offense, lying, gossiping... all these things can blow up the people who trust you and destroy a unity of family! A family unit is a strong force for God and can be a wonderful witness of God's family. So satan attacks families in order to destroy them so they are no longer an effective witness of God. God is the Father, we are His children. The loving relationship God has with His children can be reflected in a healthy family relationship here on earth. But a destroyed family reflects nothing but satan's handiwork. If you have been affected by a satan's destruction of your family; or, if you have destroyed your family or someone else's family, then it's time to let God redeem the situation. If you've been instrumental in the destruction, repent and ask for forgiveness and ask the Holy Spirit to bring healing where you have sown hurt. If you've been hurt in a satanic attack on your family, pray and ask God to redeem the situation and help you to forgive and live in healing.
