Before His works of old.
23 I have been established from everlasting,
From the beginning, before there was ever an earth.
24 When there were no depths I was brought forth,
When there were no fountains abounding with water.
25 Before the mountains were settled,
Before the hills, I was brought forth;
26 While as yet He had not made the earth or the fields,
Or the primal dust of the world.
27 When He prepared the heavens, I was there,
When He drew a circle on the face of the deep,
28 When He established the clouds above,
When He strengthened the fountains of the deep,
29 When He assigned to the sea its limit,
So that the waters would not transgress His command,
When He marked out the foundations of the earth,
30T hen I was beside Him as a master craftsman;
And I was daily His delight,
Rejoicing always before Him,
31 Rejoicing in His inhabited world,
And my delight was with the sons of men.
Proverbs 8:22-31 (NIV) 22 “The Lord brought me forth as the first of his works,
before his deeds of old;
23 I was formed long ages ago,
at the very beginning, when the world came to be.
24 When there were no watery depths, I was given birth,
when there were no springs overflowing with water;
25 before the mountains were settled in place,
before the hills, I was given birth,
26 before he made the world or its fields
or any of the dust of the earth.
27 I was there when he set the heavens in place,
when he marked out the horizon on the face of the deep,
28 when he established the clouds above
and fixed securely the fountains of the deep,
29 when he gave the sea its boundary
so the waters would not overstep his command,
and when he marked out the foundations of the earth.
30 Then I was constantly at his side.
I was filled with delight day after day,
rejoicing always in his presence,
31 rejoicing in his whole world
and delighting in mankind.
Psalm 104:24 How many are Your works, O LORD! In wisdom You have made them all; the earth is full of Your creatures.
Proverbs 3:19 The LORD founded the earth by wisdom and established the heavens by understanding.
Colossians 1:15-18 (NIV) 15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. 17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. 18 And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.
Same verse, different translation:
Colossians 1:15-18 (NLT) 15 Christ is the visible image of the invisible God.
He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation,
16 for through him God created everything
in the heavenly realms and on earth.
He made the things we can see
and the things we can’t see—
such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world.
Everything was created through him and for him.
17 He existed before anything else,
and he holds all creation together.
18 Christ is also the head of the church,
which is his body.
He is the beginning,
supreme over all who rise from the dead.
So he is first in everything.
Continuing this famous poem that praises Wisdom, King Solomon is using Lady Wisdom to communicate that God used wisdom when He created the world. Poets have always used personification as a literary device, attributing human qualities to an inanimate subject. It is a form of fiction, a fantasy, to help readers see a subject in a new way. Solomon is offering an encomium, a speech or piece of writing that praises someone or something highly, to godly wisdom.Wisdom is one of God's attributes which He has possessed from eternity. He never lacked wisdom. We may learn wisdom in steps but wisdom is inherent in God. Wisdom was indispensable and is infused throughout God's creation. Every created thing speaks of the Wisdom of God. Wisdom originates in God, the triune God. The Trinity of Father, Son and Holy Spirit work in such perfect unity and harmony as to be One! So God is wisdom, Jesus is Wisdom and the Holy Spirit is wisdom. God, the Trinity, was there at creation using wisdom during creation. And God's wisdom is seen through every created thing and in Creation as a whole! Can we gain faith by looking at God through His Creation and know that He is God and He is in control and has the wisdom to take care of everything!?!
Roman 1:18-23 (BSB) 18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness. 19 For what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood from His workmanship, so that men are without excuse.
21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified Him as God nor gave thanks to Him, but they became futile in their thinking and darkened in their foolish hearts. 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images of mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.
Same verse, different translation:
Romans 1:18-23 (NLT) 18 But God shows his anger from heaven against all sinful, wicked people who suppress the truth by their wickedness. 19 They know the truth about God because he has made it obvious to them. 20 For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.
21 Yes, they knew God, but they wouldn’t worship him as God or even give him thanks. And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God was like. As a result, their minds became dark and confused. 22 Claiming to be wise, they instead became utter fools. 23 And instead of worshiping the glorious, ever-living God, they worshiped idols made to look like mere people and birds and animals and reptiles.
- Define encomium.
- Define personification.
- From the verses we've read, can you see that God is wisdom and God is a triune God so Jesus is Wisdom, the Holy Spirit is wisdom and God the Father is wisdom?
- Have you ever meditated on how everything in God's Creation tells of His Wisdom? From a blade of grass to a single cell, from a star in the sky to a mountain lake, from a single hair from your head to the ocean waves... God's Wisdom is seen. Can you celebrate and rejoice in God's Wisdom and His Creation?!?
- Read Job 38-42 about God's Creation.
