Proverbs 8:14-16

Proverbs 8:14-16 (NIV) 14 Counsel and sound judgment are mine;
I have insight, I have power.
15 By me kings reign
and rulers issue decrees that are just;
16 by me princes govern,
and nobles—all who rule on earth.

Proverbs 8:14-16 (NLT) 14 Common sense and success belong to me.
Insight and strength are mine.
15 Because of me, kings reign,
and rulers make just decrees.
16 Rulers lead with my help,
and nobles make righteous judgments.

As we have been studying Proverbs, we know that Lady Wisdom is godly wisdom and all true wisdom begins and ends with God. We have seen scripture that tells us that God, the Father, is wisdom. Jesus, the Son, is wisdom. The Holy Spirit is wisdom. If we want godly wisdom, true wisdom, we must ask it of God for it does not come natural to us.

James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

These verses don't say all rulers use godly wisdom. It says that those who do, "make just decrees" and "righteous judgments". But let's always remember God is the only One in control and all things are used by Him to bring the greatest good to His people. So even an evil ruler can be used by God to accomplish His purposes. They can cooperate with God and receive blessing, or they can be used as a tool regardless. But God will accomplish His sovereign Will and Plan.

We may have an education and we may have spent a lot of money for that degree that hangs on the wall. We may have done research and we may have a high powered job but that doesn't mean we have wisdom. It means we have book knowledge.

Dr. Charles Lieber’s biography shows that he is a leading international authority on nanoscience and nanotechnology with over 400 papers published on these topics.

Acclaimed Harvard Scientist Is Arrested, Accused Of Lying About Ties To China
Charles Lieber, the chair of Harvard University's Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, has been arrested and criminally charged with making "false, fictitious and fraudulent statements" to the U.S. Defense Department about his ties to a Chinese government program to recruit foreign scientists and researchers.

The Justice Department says Lieber, 60, lied about his contact with the Chinese program known as the Thousand Talents Plan, which the U.S. has previously flagged as a serious intelligence concern. He also is accused of lying about about a lucrative contract he signed with China's Wuhan University of Technology...

The arrangement between Lieber and the Chinese institution spanned "significant" periods of time between at least 2012 and 2017, according to the affidavit. It says the deal called for Lieber to be paid up to $50,000 a month, in addition to $150,000 per year "for living and personal expenses."

"Lieber was also awarded more than $1.5 million by WUT and the Chinese government to establish a research lab and conduct research at WUT," the document states.

For a large part of the time frame in question, Lieber was also the principal investigator on at least six U.S. Defense Department research grants, with a cumulative value of more than $8 million, according to the affidavit. It also says he was the principal investigator on more than $10 million in grants funded by the National Institutes of Health...

In 2017, Harvard bestowed its highest faculty honor on Lieber, naming him a University Professor – a title he shared with only 25 other faculty members, as The Harvard Gazette reported. But the acclaimed academic is now barred from the university's campus...

Lieber earned his doctorate in chemistry from Stanford University in 1985. Before he joined Harvard in 1991, his academic career included stops at the California Institute of Technology and Columbia University.

FBI arrests Harvard chemist; two others charged in Chinese research cases

Peter Zeidenberg, a lawyer who has represented Chinese Americans accused of espionage, said in an email that the Justice Department “has launched an all-out war on any U.S. scientist associated with the 1000 Talent or other Chinese Talent programs."... “The government is now expecting perfect compliance for scientists who received no training on how these forms needed to be filled out and no warnings about the dangers of submitting an inaccurate form,” Zeidenberg said. “Treating these mistakes as felonies is entirely inappropriate.”

Dr. Charles Lieber has a LOT of education and experience. He has the book smarts. He had a highly paid job with one of the most prestigious universities. He was making a lot of money but it evidently wasn't enough because he accepts money from the Chinese to the tune of millions. Now, he's been caught selling American technology to the Chinese. All those millions will have to be used to keep him out of jail and he's probably lost his job at Harvard. How smart was that? How wise was he? He has hired a lawyer for his defense. He was smart enough to get a good attorney but his lawyer's defense is he wasn't smart enough to get an attorney when signing deals with the Chinese?!? That pot won't hold water. He knew exactly what he was doing. He's book smart enough to know. But he wasn't wise enough to know. He evidently didn't have discernment, understanding of where it could lead, or he was stupid enough not to care and thought he would get away with it. He didn't mind taking the risk but when he got caught, NOW he's worried about the consequences. The sad thing with people like this is, instead of learning some wisdom, they will just get craftier and more cunning at their subterfuge. Many never learn wisdom, they just learn cunning, scheming ways to keep plotting evil. It's up to him, whether he will learn wisdom, maturity and turn around or whether he will keep squirming out from under consequences and continuing to plot evil to enrich himself. It always comes back around, what you reap is what you sow. But people refuse to believe it, they never learn the lessons. For those, their end is doomed. The only way is to go to God, repent, ask forgiveness and let God lead you in the ways of righteousness.

Let's look at a story in the Bible that shows a King who asked for wisdom.

1 Kings 2:1-4  1 Now the days of David drew near that he should die, and he charged Solomon his son, saying: 2 “I go the way of all the earth; be strong, therefore, and prove yourself a man. 3 And keep the charge of the Lord your God: to walk in His ways, to keep His statutes, His commandments, His judgments, and His testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses, that you may prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn; 4 that the Lord may fulfill His word which He spoke concerning me, saying, ‘If your sons take heed to their way, to walk before Me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul,’ He said, ‘you shall not lack a man on the throne of Israel.’

1 Kings 2:10-12  10 So David rested with his fathers, and was buried in the City of David. 11 The period that David reigned over Israel was forty years; seven years he reigned in Hebron, and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty-three years. 12 Then Solomon sat on the throne of his father David; and his kingdom was firmly established.

1 Kings 3:5-15  5 At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night; and God said, “Ask! What shall I give you?”
6 And Solomon said: “You have shown great mercy to Your servant David my father, because he walked before You in truth, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with You; You have continued this great kindness for him, and You have given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day. 7 Now, O Lord my God, You have made Your servant king instead of my father David, but I am a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in. 8 And Your servant is in the midst of Your people whom You have chosen, a great people, too numerous to be numbered or counted. 9 Therefore give to Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people, that I may discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours?
10 The speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing. 11 Then God said to him: “Because you have asked this thing, and have not asked long life for yourself, nor have asked riches for yourself, nor have asked the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern justice, 12 behold, I have done according to your words; see, I have given you a wise and understanding heart, so that there has not been anyone like you before you, nor shall any like you arise after you. 13 And I have also given you what you have not asked: both riches and honor, so that there shall not be anyone like you among the kings all your days. 14 So if you walk in My ways, to keep My statutes and My commandments, as your father David walked, then I will lengthen your days.”
15 Then Solomon awoke; and indeed it had been a dream. And he came to Jerusalem and stood before the ark of the covenant of the Lord, offered up burnt offerings, offered peace offerings, and made a feast for all his servants.

1 Kings 4:29-34  29 And God gave Solomon wisdom and exceedingly great understanding, and largeness of heart like the sand on the seashore. 30 Thus Solomon’s wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the men of the East and all the wisdom of Egypt. 31 For he was wiser than all men—than Ethan the Ezrahite, and Heman, Chalcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol; and his fame was in all the surrounding nations. 32 He spoke three thousand proverbs, and his songs were one thousand and five. 33 Also he spoke of trees, from the cedar tree of Lebanon even to the hyssop that springs out of the wall; he spoke also of animals, of birds, of creeping things, and of fish. 34 And men of all nations, from all the kings of the earth who had heard of his wisdom, came to hear the wisdom of Solomon.

1 Kings 10:23-24  23 So King Solomon surpassed all the kings of the earth in riches and wisdom. 24 Now all the earth sought the presence of Solomon to hear his wisdom, which God had put in his heart.

Although God gave him the wisdom AND everything else, Solomon allowed the world to come between himself and God. Solomon turned to worldly pleasures instead of the pursuit of God. In Ecclesiastes he writes about all the things he tried only to find, in the end, the fear of God and following His commandments is the only thing in life that is not vanity. He had so much gold, silver, treasures, possessions, luxuries, projects and slaves that he lost his central focus, his first love, God. He became lost in lust and ended up collecting women as "wives"(700) and "concubines"(300). Many of these women were foreigners who brought their idolatrous religions with them and he let them build altars to their idols.

Of his wives, he married the Pharaoh's daughter and women of Moab, Ammon, Edom, Sidon and of the Hittites. His marriage to Pharaoh's daughter appears to have cemented a political alliance with Egypt whereas he clung to his other wives and concubines "in love". - Wikipedia

1 Kings 11:4-8  4 For it was so, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned his heart after other gods; and his heart was not loyal to the Lord his God, as was the heart of his father David. 5 For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites. 6 Solomon did evil in the sight of the Lord, and did not fully follow the Lord, as did his father David. 7 Then Solomon built a high place for Chemosh the abomination of Moab, on the hill that is east of Jerusalem, and for Molech the abomination of the people of Ammon. 8 And he did likewise for all his foreign wives, who burned incense and sacrificed to their gods.

It's rather frightening to read this story. King Solomon started off so good. He was given godly wisdom that made him the wisest man on earth, and given so much material wealth to implement his wisdom. He wrote so much of the wisdom books in the Bible. But, he let the world get between him and God. He let his lust lead him to disobedience to God. His sin of lust, like his father before him (King David), lead him down a dark path. The result was to go so far as participating in his wives' idolatry. The verses above said Solomon "went after" those idols. Solomon "did evil in the sight of the Lord, and did not fully follow the Lord". He evidently did much damage before he discovered that all is dust in the wind except for the fear of Lord and following His commandments.

Do we really think we are smarter than King Solomon? If he can fall into sin and the lusts of this world, what stops us? Nothing. It's why we need a Savior! Thank You, Jesus, for saving me from my sins!!!!

Godly wisdom is to recognize our need for a Savior. To recognize that our sins damn us and we have no way to make things right. We are helpless in our sin. We are born in sin and we willfully sin. And there is nothing we can do to set things right. So God made the way. He sent His Son and Jesus voluntarily came to pay the price for us so we could be saved! Glory to God!! We can be saved, forgiven, set free from sin and spend eternity in Heaven. To God be all the praise and adoration because He did what we could not do! This is true wisdom.

May our leaders today look to God for wisdom. May they find the Lord Jesus Christ and accept Him as their Savior. May the Holy Spirit then indwell in them and give them godly wisdom to make the right decisions. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

  • Have you ever thought a leader was going to save this country? Did you come to realize he/she is limited or faulty and could not save this country?
  • Have you ever seen great godly wisdom coming from a person you wouldn't think could have much wisdom? Maybe they have limited education, or mentally handicapped, or just a regular, everyday Joe Blow. But deep wisdom comes from them and you recognize it.
  • Have you come to the realization that only God is the one who can save this nation, this world?
  • Do you pray for our leaders to be saved, to have godly wisdom and to make the right decisions for our nation? 1 Timothy 2:1-2, Proverbs 21:1, Romans 13:1, Psalms 2:10-11
  • Do you pray for godly wisdom for yourself?
