Thriller Thursday - Henry Clay Grubb, Jr. and Emma Frances Davis

Henry Clay Grubb, Sr. (DOB 8/18/1836 in Boone, Davidson County, NC to John Conrad Gruff and Catherine Hedrick; DOD 12/6/1909 in Davidson County, NC) was first married to Malinda Hedrick (DOB Abt. 1837 in NC; DOD 5/11/1862 in Davidson County, NC). They had two daughters before she died, Mary Ellen Grubb (married David Worth Barnes) and Susan Catherine Grubb (married Robert Lewis Lomax).

He married his second wife, Louisa Albertine Snider (aka Louisa Albertine Snyder) (DOB 5/16/1846 in Boone, Davidson County, NC; DOD 11/10/1935 in Davidson County, NC) in 1866. She was a widow. Her first husband was Alexander West who died in 1864. She had a daughter by Alexander West named, Mary A. West.

Henry Clay Grubb, Sr. and Louisa Albertine Snyder raised her daughter and his daughters. They also had their own children:
  1. Maggie Louisa Jane Grubb was born 3/3/1868 in NC. She married Daniel Lee Wilson on 7/24/1898 in Davie county, NCDaniel Lee Wilson was born 8/22/1863 in NCMaggie Grubb Wilson died 1/11/1922 in Davidson County, NC of a brain tumor. Daniel Lee Wilson died 11/27/1953 at 90 yrs old. He never remarried. They had Ira Odell Wilson, Lillian "Lillie" Mae Wilson, Daniel Grady Wilson, John Webster Wilson, Nellie Wilson, Maggie Leigh Wilson, Rutherford Corba Wilson, William Howard Wilson, Nena Lucille Wilson, Benjamin Franklin "Jack" Wilson.
  2. Henry Clay Grubb, Jr. was born 11/22/1870 in North Carolina. When he was born he had two older half sisters, Mary West and an older full sister. After his birth he had a little brother, John Adam Grubb. (see below)
  3. John Adam Grubb was born 6/2/1880 in NC. He married Nota Belle Pack (DOB 9/12/1883 in Davie County, NC; DOD 3/13/1936 in Rowan County, NC). They had 5 sons and a daughter: Gerald Giles Grubb, Gaskell Henry Grubb, Roger Ney Grubb, Mabel "Mae" Adam Grubb, Ralph Cecil Grubb, Wayne Joseph "Joe" Grubb. John Adam Grubb had formerly been a teacher and worked with his brother, Henry Clay Grubb, Jr. but he decided to leave the business and go into the ministry. He was ordained on 10/16/1913 just after his brother, H.C. Grubb, was killed. For the next 5 years he served in Baptist churches in Mecklenburg, Stanly and Davie counties. They had just moved to Florida where his mother and his mother-in-law were living with them. He did not have a church but had bought a bakery for his son, Gerald Giles Grubb, to run while he attended university. Everyone in the household, except Emma Frances Davis Grubb (his mother), came down with the Spanish Flu during the epidemic. John Adam Grubb and his mother-in-law died of the flu. He died 11/2/1918 in Deland, Volusia, FL. The others recovered. Gerald Giles Grubb did go on to be a teacher and Baptist minister.

Darr was the son of Henry Darr and Margaret Simerson and his siblings were Amanda Jane Darr (married Lewis F. Lamb), Charles Darr (never married) and Nancy Ellen Darr (married Rufus Kilpatric Williams). Flora and Robert Darr had Braxton Clarence Darr (died as a toddler), Lula Darr (died as an infant) and William Adam Darr (1891-1965).

  3. Obediah "Obe" Lawrence Davis (DOB 3/31/1871 in Linwood, Davidson County, NC; DOD 10/16/1904 in Davidson County, NC) married Maude Mildred Green (DOB 6/2/1873 in Davidson County, NC; DOD 7/5/1940 in Boone, Davidson County, NC). They had Ruby Lynch Davis, Lloyd Grady Davis (married Lena Victoria Crotts), Ethel Davis (died in infancy), Edith Davis (died in infancy), Elmer Cleo Davis (married Earl Alfonso Elliott who killed himself on Christmas day in 1932 with gunshot wound to abdomen at 28 yrs old and 2nd William Wise Davis).
  4. Martha "Mattie" Jane Davis (DOB 3/27/1873 in Davidson County, NC; DOD 4/28/1947 in Boone, Davidson County, NC) married William Wilson (DOB 7/28/1853 in NC; DOD 10/8/1931 in Davidson County, NC) in 1891. No children.

It was as I was researching my Barnes line that I came across these families and the story of Henry Clay Grubb. Notie Barnes is my first cousin 3 times removed.

They had Olin Grady Fritts, Mary Frances Fritts, Annie Afton Fritts, Willie Beatrice Fritts, David Thomas Fritts, Jr., Vernice Virginia Fritts, Laura Elizabeth Fritts, Charles Ray Fritts, Catherine Wanda Fritts.
  9. Olin Thales Davis, Sr. (DOB 3/12/1884 in Lexington, Davidson County, NC; DOD 7/2/1953 in Washington, D.C.) married Sarah Louise Barnes (DOB 10/19/1884 in NC to Charles Adolphus Barnes and Alice Joan Kindley; DOD 9/8/1970 in Lexington, Davidson County, NC). They had Mildred Verona Davis, Hugh Wallace Davis, Sr., Vergen Davis, Foy Adolphus Davis, Olin Thales Davis, Jr., Edward "Edd" Shemwell Davis, Charles Holton Davis, Mary Joan Davis. Olin Thales Davis married Sarah Louise Barnes, daughter of Charles Adolphus Barnes. Above, William Lester Davis married Laura Lenora "Notie" Barnes, daughter of William Henderson "Hence" Barnes. Charles Adolphus Barnes and William Henderson "Hence" Barnes were brothers so Sarah Louise Barnes and Laura Lenora Barnes were 1st cousins. My direct ancestor was their brother, Lewis Francis Barnes.

Edna Grubb (DOB 1/14/1891 in Davidson County, NC; DOD 12/21/1966 in Lexington, Davidson County, NC) married Andrew Jackson Little (DOB 10/3/1891 in NC; DOD 8/19/1936 in Davidson County, NC) on 8/14/1913 in Davidson County, NC. They had Helen Francis Little (died in infancy), June Carter Little (married Mary Bernice Raker), Zeb Grubb Little (died in 1954 at the age of 28 yrs old in a private plane crash in News Ferry, Halifax, VA. He had been in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII.)
  2. Beulah Grubb (DOB 4/13/1893 in Davidson County, NC; DOD 7/17/1967 in Lexington, Davidson County, NC) married Raymond Clifford Fitzgerald (DOB 4/14/1892 in NC; DOD 5/25/1963 in Davidson County, NC). They had Emma Florence Fitzgerald, Raymond Clifford Fitzgerald, Robert Edwin Fitzgerald.
  3. Zebulon "Zeb" Vance Grubb (DOB 8/6/1898 in Davidson County, NC; DOD 8/31/1949 in Provident, Rowan County, NC) married Alma Mae Lee (DOB 1/19/1895 in NC; DOD 6/28/1974). Zeb Vance was 51 yrs old when he was killed in an airplane crash into the Yadkin River. His nephew, Zeb Grubb Little, would help in the search. Just 5 yrs later, Zeb Little would also die in a crash while flying his airplane.
  4. Eula Davis Grubb (DOB 5/20/1900 in Davidson County, NC; DOD 4/14/1987 in Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, NC) married, Ralph Theodore Beck (DOB 10/13/1893 in NC; DOD 1/5/1978) in 1923.
  5. Stephen Theodore Grubb (DOB 4/2/1902 in Davidson County, NC; DOD 1/14/1965 in Chapel Hill, Orange County, NC) married Miriam Gray Smith (DOB 11/10/1901 in NC; DOD 2/16/1989 in Elizabethtown, Bladen County, NC). 
  6. Zetta Grubb (DOB 7/25/1904 in Davidson County, NC; DOD 2/14/1983 in Lexington, Davidson County, NC) married Henry Odell Walser (DOB 6/14/1903 in Davidson County, NC; DOD 5/4/1984 in NC). They had Henry Davis Walser.
  7. Henry Clay Grubb, III (DOB 4/29/1906 in Davidson County, NC; DOD 2/10/1936 in Davidson County, NC). He committed suicide at 29 yrs old with pistol shot to chest. His death certificate said he was single and a physician. He had attended Wake Forest University.
  8. Robert Lay Grubb, Sr. (DOB 9/4/1910 in NC; DOD 4/23/1950 in Lexington, Davidson County, NC) married Lillian Bentley Hunt (DOB 4/2/1909 in Davidson County, NC; DOD 8/19/1964 in Lexington, Davidson County, NC). They had Robert Lay Grubb, Jr., Mary Lougene Grubb. Robert Lay Grubb, Sr. committed suicide on 4/23/1950 by gunshot sound to chest in his office at the age of 39 yrs old. He was survived by his two teenage children and his wife who did not remarry.
