Uncle James At Auburn University In The 1960's

Both of my maternal uncles, Glenn and James, attended Auburn University. I made these digital scrapbook pages of James during his years there in the 1960's. I included photos, college annual pages, his graduation photos and being in the R.O.T.C. He went on to the University of TN for his doctorate and when he got out, Vietnam was just ending and he didn't have to serve after all.

Just before his death, James pulled their old films, slides, negatives and photos had them digitalized. He shared their college films with Auburn who wrote a magazine article on them which is what the last digital scrapbook page is about.

Enjoying An Early Spring Day

Our grandnieces, Reagan and Blaire, were enjoying an early spring day playing outside last week. It was so warm. Their grandmother, Stan's sister, Kathi, snapped these photos and they were so cute that I had to make this digital scrapbook layout. It was a sparkly day (thus the scatter of gems), the sun was shining thus the rays and the chartreuse graphic. I used colors from the photos. It makes you think of Spring so the flowers reflect springtime.

Brooke Isn't So Sure About Great Aunt Sharon's Matchmaking

As a genealogist, I come across unusual, peculiar names all the time. I started keeping a running list and collecting them. It's a family joke about me and my odd collection of names. I tease the kids all the time about what I would have named them if they had been mine. And we laugh and giggle about all the strange names. Recently, I was teasing them again and telling them I had found them a perfect boyfriend or girlfriend to marry. I was texting with our niece, their mother, Jenny. I was saying they may not be goodlooking but they have weird names and then I would throw out some of the weirdest on my list of names. The older ones were howling in laughter. When I got to Brookie, she wasn't sure what to think! Her mother snapped the picture and you can tell she wasn't sure whether to laugh or if I was really serious. Anyway, we had so much fun with it and I had this picture so I had to make a digital scrapbook layout. I'll continue to tease them with awful names and they will continue to think I'm a little crazy but it sure makes us all laugh.

William Ashby Lee Kelly Murdered By His Son

William Ashby Lee Kelly is my husband's 3rd great uncle. As I was working on the Kelly line I came across his story. Unfortunately, I have no details or backstory to help me understand what happened. But here is what I know.

William Ashby Lee Kelly (aka W.A.L. Kelly and sometimes found as Ashley Kelly instead of Ashby Kelly) was born 7/17/1863 to Jamison Gazaway Kelly (aka Jameson Gazaway Kelly, Jamison Gasaway Kelly, Jamison Gassaway Kelly, J.G. Kelly, Jimison Gazaway Kelly, Jemmison Gazaway Kelly) (DOB 4/15/1836 in Pinckneyville, Union County, SC to Thomas Norman Kelly, Sr and Melissa Elizabeth Hames; DOD 10/5/1906 in Pinckneyville, Union County, SC) and C. Elizabeth Free (DOB 1/25/1835 in Union County, SC; DOD 1/5/1901 in Pinckneyville, Union County, SC). He was the 5th of 10 children. Jimison Kelly and Elizabeth Free had 4 boys and 6 girls and W.A.L. Kelly was the 4th child, the 3rd boy in the family.

Obituary of Dewey Kelly
Union - Dewey Kelly, 89, of 314 S. Mountain St., died Feb. 10, 1993, in Wallace Thomson Hospital after a long illness.
A native of Union, he was the husband of Myrtle Eaves Kelly and son of W.A.L. and Josie Turner Kelly. He was a member of Unity United Methodist Church and was retired from Excelsior Mill.
Also surviving are two daughters, Louise Garner and Catherine England of Union; a son, Thomas Turner Kelly of McBee; a sister, Elizabeth Kelly of Spartanburg; eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home. Services will be at 3 p.m. Friday at the funeral chapel by the Rev. Manley Campbell. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

So that's the facts. Why did Dewey Kelly hit his father twice with an axe? Front hit and back hit. But only twice. So he hit once and then again. But not a frenzy of multiple blows. If it was somehow an accident, he wouldn't have hit his father twice, front and back. If it was a rage killing, would there have been more blows? According to the newspaper reports, no motive or reason was given and he was sentenced to "manslaughter" and not "murder". His sentence was only 8 yrs and then commuted to 3 yrs. This leads me to believe there was a motive and one that was understood by the authorities, judge and jurors because the charge was downgraded to manslaughter and the sentence was pretty lenient for an ax murder.

Dewey Kelly evidently was married to a young Myrtle Eaves because their first child was born in 1934, the year of the murder. The following two children were born after he got out of prison. So Myrtle stayed with him the rest of his life. If he was a scary man, would she have waited for him? She didn't divorce him.

In the 1940 U.S. Census, Dewey, Myrtle, their first child and their new baby were living with his sister, Bessie Kelly, and her husband Ben Griffin Faucett. If there were hard feelings in the family, they wouldn't be living with his sister even as a lodger. Also Dewey stayed in Union, SC. I.e. he was still accepted in the community where he had committed patricide with an axe. He was working in the 1940 census and his obituary said he was retired from Excelsior Mill. So his incarceration didn't keep him from getting a job.

So we have an ax murderer who killed his own father. But there must have been some unsaid extenuating circumstances. What motive could give Dewey a lenient sentence for an ax murder?

Jenny's Funny Stories

Our niece, Jenny, can tell some funny stories about life with 4 children and she's good at writing them. I have to scrapbook her stories as she shares on Facebook. Sometimes I have to find a way to do it without pictures of the actual "event". This first scrapbook layout I used a photo from a couple of weeks ago of Jenny and Brooke in the car. Then I located photos of Chic-Fil-A I found on the internet to create the visuals for the digital scrapbook page. Chic-Fil-A is one of Jenny's favorite fast food restaurants and her story referenced their support of Christian values so I wanted to include a little history and company philosophy on Chic-Fil-A that I got from their website. I included this in the journaling section of the layout. Then I copied Jenny's story and some of the funny comments from Facebook.

On this digital scrapbook page, Jenny did snap a photo that I could use with her story. The photo showed her nice purse and Starbucks coffee cup against a grocery store background. So I was seeing it as a mixture of formal and casual like wearing a mink coat with bluejeans. So I tried to accentuate that with using some formal elements with casual elements on the scrapbook layout. Then her story was about some "me time" away from her 4 children's chaos so I added the doodles and scribbles in the background. Not overpowering since they weren't there. But in the background to show they are always on her mind.

Savannah and Will

I made this digital scrapbook page of Savannah and Will. I tried to make the scrapbook page look like a dream catcher.
