Thriller Thursday - Clark Norton Kills Benjamin Franklin

These people are not related to any of our lines but I came across this story and found it interesting.

Clark Norton was born 5/10/1881 in Madison County, NC to Martin Richard Norton (DOB 7/13/1839 in Madison County, NC; DOD 1/12/1924 in Greeneville, Greene County, TN) and Lavina "Viney" Chandler (DOB 1/16/1849 in Madison County, NC; DOD 5/8/1927 in Greene County, TN).

Shelton Laurel area

I found these photos online about Shelton Laurel and hiking some trails there. I thought these showed how dense the mountain laurel could be which is where the area gets it's name and why it was remote and isolated. During the War of Northern Aggression there could be snipers and men behind every bush.

1) Samantha Norton (DOB 5/1/1903 in Madison County, NC; DOD 1/3/1991 in Cocke County, TN) married Dillard Franklin (aka Dellard Franklin) (DOB 6/18/1900 in NC; DOD 7/19/1973 in Parrotsville, Cocke County, TN)

Vinnie Norton went on to marry Joseph "Joe" Cantrell on 4/23/1908 in Madison County, NC. Joseph Cantrell was born 4/1888 in NC and died 5/9/1940 in Madison County, NC.

He Went For Sweetheart With Marriage License And Revolver In Hand
Sensational Murder Over Love Affair is Reported From White Rock, N.C., Parties From Prominent Families
Within a Half Hour After Young Clarke Norton Had Killed His Rival He and Girl Were Married
By Associated Press
Asheville, N.C., Nov 13-Further particulars of the killing of young William Franklin (sic), at White Rock, N.C., by Clarke Norton, both of whom were members of well-known families, state that Norton went to the home of George Franklin where Elizabeth Gentry, over whom the killing was about, lived.
He had a marriage license and a revolver.
After killing Franklin, his rival for Miss Gentry's hand, whom he found at her house, Norton and Miss Gentry left for a nearby minister, and were married within a half hour afterward.
Norton was not arrested until the following morning, when he was taken to the jail at Marshall, N.C.
He was accompanied by his bride, who begged to be allowed to go to jail with him, but was refused.
The bride is a pretty 17-year-old girl.

Sunday Homicide
Both In Love With Same Girl
Clerk Norton (sic, Clark Norton) Kills Benjamin Franklin, Both Young and of Highly Respected Madison County Families
Asheville, N.C., Nov. 11-News was received here this afternoon of another homicide in Madison County. The killing occurred last evening at the home of George Franklin at White Rock in the Shelton Laurel section. It seems that two young men, Clerk Norton (sic) and Benj. Franklin, were paying attention to a young lady, Miss Gentry, guest at the home of George Franklin and there they met last evening, when young Norton, it is alleged, through jealousy, shot and killed Franklin.
Franklin was twenty-two years of age while Norton, the slayer, is scarcely eighteen. Norton was arrested. Full particulars of the affair could not be learned as the scene of the killing is some sixteen or eighteen miles from Marshall. Both men, it is said, are of well known and highly respected families.

Slayer of Ben Franklin Refuses to Make a Statement
Asheville, Nov. 15-A Telephone message from Marshall this afternoon said that efforts to secure a statement from Clark Norton, the 18-year-old slayer of Ben Franklin, now in the Marshall jail, have been futile; that Norton's attorneys had advised him not to talk. It is understood, however, that the accused will plead self defense.
Norton shot and killed Ben Franklin Sunday evening at the home of George Franklin, in Madison county. He had gone to Franklin's home for the purpose of marrying a young lady at the home and there met Ben Franklin. Trouble ensued and Norton killed Franklin, afterwards during the night carrying out his previous intentions of marrying the young woman of his choice.

He killed his rival and married the girl all in the same night. As you can see from the record below that the girl was Daisy Gentry.

Daisy C. Gentry was born 9/1884 in NC to Lucinda "Lucy" Gentry (DOB 11/8/1846 in Buncombe County, NC; DOD 7/8/1930 in Flat Creek, Buncombe County, NC) and an unknown father. In fact, Lucinda had 3 children with unknown father. The other two were Thomas Edgar Gentry (DOB 6/4/1882 in NC; DOD 4/5/1969 in Weaverville, Buncombe County, NC) and Ruby L. Gentry (DOB 10/1888 in NC; DOD ? in ? ). Lucinda Gentry was the daughter of John Homes Gentry and Sarah Bale or Sarah Ball.

Despite murdering Benjamin Franklin, Clark Norton only got 18 months "on the Buncombe roads". This meant he had to work in the chain gang that worked on the roads. It seems the marriage didn't last long as he is back living with his parents in the 1910 U.S. Census. But they no longer live in Shelton Laurel, Madison County, NC. Maybe Clark Norton was no longer welcome in the community there or they were afraid the Franklin family would retaliate.

1910 U.S. Census of Civil District 2, Cocke, Tennessee; Roll: T624_1494; Page: 6B; Enumeration District: 0037; FHL microfilm: 1375507, "Martin Norton"

Winson Norton, Grandson, M, W, 14 yrs old, Single, Born in NC, Both parents born in NC

As far as Daisy Gentry is concerned, I found a "Daisy Norton" (her married name) marrying a J.N. Epley on 1/23/1908 in Buncombe County, NC. She and Clark got married 11/10/1907, and she remarried on 1/23/1908, that would be a pretty fast turnaround. Maybe the Daisy Norton who married J.N. Epley wasn't the same Daisy? I couldn't really be sure and there were other Daisies. Therefore I didn't follow her any further. It's possible that she got an annulment or quick divorce if it seemed that Clark forced her to marry him?

Clark Norton next married Eliza Franklin. Yep, he killed a Ben Franklin at a George Franklin home over Daisy Gentry and then married a Franklin!

Cause of death: "Dr. Ed Bell of Greeneville treated this case. No certificate turned in"

We have no idea how Clark's 2nd wife died as the death certificate is unusual. I have seen other death certificates that say, generally, "no physician in attendance". But this death certificate doesn't say that. It says, "Dr. Ed Bell of Greeneville treated this case". So a doctor was in the loop but he didn't fill out a death certificate. Why? There is a medical code #205 which may be "heart failure". She was only 30 yrs old. Very sad.

Workman Hardlabor Huneycutt

Yes, this man was named Workman Hardlabor Honeycutt. He was often referred to as W.H. Huneycutt. I even saw him as Wm.H. Huneycutt. Wm is usually a shortening for William but, in this case, it was for Workman! Huneycutt is spelled several different ways: Huneycutt, Honeycutt, Hunnicutt, Hunicutt. W.H. Honeycutt is very, very distantly related but his name captured my interest and I wanted to work on his line.

Workman Hardlabor Huneycutt was born 1/1/1824 in Iredell County, NC to Andrew Asa Huneycutt (DOB 1790 in NC; DOD Aft. 1850 in Iredell County, NC) and Dovie Brown (DOB ? in ? ; DOD ? in ? ).

Workman H. Honeycutt married Martha Elizabeth Edwards. Martha was born 9/5/1828 in NC. They had a large family:

1) Mary Jane Honeycutt (DOB 2/14/1848 in Iredell County, NC; DOD 2/19/1896 in NC) married Henry Talley Johnston (DOB 8/9/1840 in Iredell County, NC; DOD 10/17/1925 in Iredell County, NC). They had Ella Juliette Johnston, Anna Frances Johnston, James Hinton Johnston, Mary Elizabeth "Mattie" Johnston, Zebulon "Zeb" Vance Johnston, Vista Florence Johnston, Hallie Johnston, Ida May Johnston, Alice Oleta Johnston, Jetting Johnston. H.T. Johnston married 2nd Maria Elizabeth Dry (1858-1911) and married 3rd Sara Mathilda Jones (1863-1949). Henry Talley Johnston had a terrible time. His 1st wife, Mary Jane Honeycutt, had 10 children. They lost Ida May Johnston as an infant. Then in 1896, Mary Jane got sick and died at 48 yrs old. At the same time 2 of their daughters also died in 1896 from illness (Hallie and Jettie Johnston). So this man had lost 3 children and a wife and was left with 7 children. Another child, Alice Oleta Johnson, died in 1907 at 22 yrs old, unmarried. He evidently had a farm, home, barn, livestock and implements. But he got into debt and had to sell his farm. He took a job but then the illness came and then the deaths and he was destitute. He sent word to some friends and family back home to ask for some help. But for some reason, the local newspaper heard about it and made a big deal of his choosing to sell his farm and take a job but how tragedy had struck. The writer intimated that Mr. Johnston had been "dissatisfied" and made a bad choice to sell out and move due to his inability to be content with the blessings God had given him. And now he was paying the price and having to ask for charity. Even to me, I was wondering why was any of that anybody's business and how dare they hold his life and choices up as a moral lesson of what not to do!?! It wasn't like the man could have known his wife and daughters would die or that he had made some type of immoral decisions! The tragedies came out of the blue and there is no way to know that sort of thing in the future and his need of assistance for such a time would have been the same whether he was still back at his farm or in his new home. He still would have needed help with his motherless children and help while he was taking nursing his sick and dying family members. Why wouldn't he reach out to friends and family that he had lived amongst all his life when he was at the lowest point in his life. I will post the newspaper articles (and his reply) later. He and his 2nd wife lost their only child as an infant.

2) Robert S. Honeycutt (DOB 11/15/1849 in Iredell County, NC; DOD 10/4/1900 in NC) never married.

3) Dovey Julia Ann Honeycutt (DOB 7/10/1851 in Iredell County, NC; DOD 11/20/1889 in NC) married William Mack Atwell (DOB 2/25/1853 in NC; DOD 12/5/1893 in Iredell County, NC). They had Mary Ellen Atwell, Edgar Marshall Atwell, Joseph Walter Atwell, Ida Cordia Atwell, Ollie M. Atwell (died as infant). Dovey and William Mack Atwell died fairly young leaving their 4 surviving children to take care of themselves. Dovey died first at 37 yrs old. W.M. Atwell died in 1893 at 40 yrs old. The eldest was Mary Ellen Atwell who was 14 yrs old when her father died. The youngest was Ida Cordia Atwell who was only 7 yrs old. In the 1900 U.S. Census, they are living on a farm, just the 4 of them. The farm was owned mortgage free. Family did live around them so I don't mean they were without any help, but they were living in a home without parents. Mary Ellen married a much older man, Merrit N. Roberts, who was 30 yrs her senior. She was 36 when they married and he was 66! They were married 10 yrs when he died. Ida Cordia Atwell never married. The two brothers married in their 30's and both brothers died in 1966.

4) John M. Honeycutt (DOB 1/18/1853 in Iredell County, NC; DOD 3/8/1915 in Statesville, Iredell County, NC) married Nancy "Nannie" Jane Webb (DOB 12/26/1849 in Richmond County ,NC; DOD 5/20/1917 in Chambersburg, Iredell County, NC).  No children.

5) David Maxwell Honeycutt (DOB 2/4/1855 in Iredell County, NC; DOD 8/30/1931 in Cool Springs, Iredell County, NC) married 1st Mary Jane "Jennie" McCorkle (DOB 12/27/1855 in NC; DOD 10/27/1921 in Chambersburg, Iredell County, NC) and they had Arthur Junius Honeycutt, Eras Ovella Honeycutt, Orin McCorkle Honeycutt, Iva Elnora Honeycutt, William Ralph Honeycutt, Elmer Eugene Honeycutt. He married 2nd Nancy Selma Blalock (DOB 9/22/1879 in Iredell County, NC; DOD 3/2/1952 in Statesville, Iredell County, NC). She had been married 1st to Robert Lee Yates and had 3 children with him before he passed away.

6) James Lemuel Monroe Honeycutt (DOB 8/12/1857 in Iredell County, NC; DOD 11/19/1931 in Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, NC) married 1st Alice Sherrill (DOB Abt. 1865 in NC; DOD 9/7/1893 in Iredell County, NC) on 9/1/1881 in Rowan County, NC. They had Walter Sherrill Honeycutt and Dora Florence Honeycutt. After Alice died, he married 2nd Rena Lugenia Hatley (DOB 1/9/1875 in Stanly County, NC; DOD 5/13/1952 in Landis, Rowan County, NC) in 1894.
