Workman Hardlabor Huneycutt

Yes, this man was named Workman Hardlabor Honeycutt. He was often referred to as W.H. Huneycutt. I even saw him as Wm.H. Huneycutt. Wm is usually a shortening for William but, in this case, it was for Workman! Huneycutt is spelled several different ways: Huneycutt, Honeycutt, Hunnicutt, Hunicutt. W.H. Honeycutt is very, very distantly related but his name captured my interest and I wanted to work on his line.

Workman Hardlabor Huneycutt was born 1/1/1824 in Iredell County, NC to Andrew Asa Huneycutt (DOB 1790 in NC; DOD Aft. 1850 in Iredell County, NC) and Dovie Brown (DOB ? in ? ; DOD ? in ? ).

Workman H. Honeycutt married Martha Elizabeth Edwards. Martha was born 9/5/1828 in NC. They had a large family:

1) Mary Jane Honeycutt (DOB 2/14/1848 in Iredell County, NC; DOD 2/19/1896 in NC) married Henry Talley Johnston (DOB 8/9/1840 in Iredell County, NC; DOD 10/17/1925 in Iredell County, NC). They had Ella Juliette Johnston, Anna Frances Johnston, James Hinton Johnston, Mary Elizabeth "Mattie" Johnston, Zebulon "Zeb" Vance Johnston, Vista Florence Johnston, Hallie Johnston, Ida May Johnston, Alice Oleta Johnston, Jetting Johnston. H.T. Johnston married 2nd Maria Elizabeth Dry (1858-1911) and married 3rd Sara Mathilda Jones (1863-1949). Henry Talley Johnston had a terrible time. His 1st wife, Mary Jane Honeycutt, had 10 children. They lost Ida May Johnston as an infant. Then in 1896, Mary Jane got sick and died at 48 yrs old. At the same time 2 of their daughters also died in 1896 from illness (Hallie and Jettie Johnston). So this man had lost 3 children and a wife and was left with 7 children. Another child, Alice Oleta Johnson, died in 1907 at 22 yrs old, unmarried. He evidently had a farm, home, barn, livestock and implements. But he got into debt and had to sell his farm. He took a job but then the illness came and then the deaths and he was destitute. He sent word to some friends and family back home to ask for some help. But for some reason, the local newspaper heard about it and made a big deal of his choosing to sell his farm and take a job but how tragedy had struck. The writer intimated that Mr. Johnston had been "dissatisfied" and made a bad choice to sell out and move due to his inability to be content with the blessings God had given him. And now he was paying the price and having to ask for charity. Even to me, I was wondering why was any of that anybody's business and how dare they hold his life and choices up as a moral lesson of what not to do!?! It wasn't like the man could have known his wife and daughters would die or that he had made some type of immoral decisions! The tragedies came out of the blue and there is no way to know that sort of thing in the future and his need of assistance for such a time would have been the same whether he was still back at his farm or in his new home. He still would have needed help with his motherless children and help while he was taking nursing his sick and dying family members. Why wouldn't he reach out to friends and family that he had lived amongst all his life when he was at the lowest point in his life. I will post the newspaper articles (and his reply) later. He and his 2nd wife lost their only child as an infant.

2) Robert S. Honeycutt (DOB 11/15/1849 in Iredell County, NC; DOD 10/4/1900 in NC) never married.

3) Dovey Julia Ann Honeycutt (DOB 7/10/1851 in Iredell County, NC; DOD 11/20/1889 in NC) married William Mack Atwell (DOB 2/25/1853 in NC; DOD 12/5/1893 in Iredell County, NC). They had Mary Ellen Atwell, Edgar Marshall Atwell, Joseph Walter Atwell, Ida Cordia Atwell, Ollie M. Atwell (died as infant). Dovey and William Mack Atwell died fairly young leaving their 4 surviving children to take care of themselves. Dovey died first at 37 yrs old. W.M. Atwell died in 1893 at 40 yrs old. The eldest was Mary Ellen Atwell who was 14 yrs old when her father died. The youngest was Ida Cordia Atwell who was only 7 yrs old. In the 1900 U.S. Census, they are living on a farm, just the 4 of them. The farm was owned mortgage free. Family did live around them so I don't mean they were without any help, but they were living in a home without parents. Mary Ellen married a much older man, Merrit N. Roberts, who was 30 yrs her senior. She was 36 when they married and he was 66! They were married 10 yrs when he died. Ida Cordia Atwell never married. The two brothers married in their 30's and both brothers died in 1966.

4) John M. Honeycutt (DOB 1/18/1853 in Iredell County, NC; DOD 3/8/1915 in Statesville, Iredell County, NC) married Nancy "Nannie" Jane Webb (DOB 12/26/1849 in Richmond County ,NC; DOD 5/20/1917 in Chambersburg, Iredell County, NC).  No children.

5) David Maxwell Honeycutt (DOB 2/4/1855 in Iredell County, NC; DOD 8/30/1931 in Cool Springs, Iredell County, NC) married 1st Mary Jane "Jennie" McCorkle (DOB 12/27/1855 in NC; DOD 10/27/1921 in Chambersburg, Iredell County, NC) and they had Arthur Junius Honeycutt, Eras Ovella Honeycutt, Orin McCorkle Honeycutt, Iva Elnora Honeycutt, William Ralph Honeycutt, Elmer Eugene Honeycutt. He married 2nd Nancy Selma Blalock (DOB 9/22/1879 in Iredell County, NC; DOD 3/2/1952 in Statesville, Iredell County, NC). She had been married 1st to Robert Lee Yates and had 3 children with him before he passed away.

6) James Lemuel Monroe Honeycutt (DOB 8/12/1857 in Iredell County, NC; DOD 11/19/1931 in Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, NC) married 1st Alice Sherrill (DOB Abt. 1865 in NC; DOD 9/7/1893 in Iredell County, NC) on 9/1/1881 in Rowan County, NC. They had Walter Sherrill Honeycutt and Dora Florence Honeycutt. After Alice died, he married 2nd Rena Lugenia Hatley (DOB 1/9/1875 in Stanly County, NC; DOD 5/13/1952 in Landis, Rowan County, NC) in 1894. They had Beulah Mae Honeycutt, James Lee Honeycutt, John Oscar Honeycutt, William Victor Honeycutt, Clarence Edgar Honeycutt, Carl Robert Honeycutt.

7) Laura Isabelle Honeycutt (DOB 1/13/1860 in Iredell County, NC; DOD 3/1/1941 in Iredell County, NC). Never married.

8) William Zebulon Vance Honeycutt (DOB 1/24/1862 in Iredell County, NC; DOD 1/22/1918 in Shelby, Cleveland County, NC) married Ellen Susanna Sherrill (DOB 3/6/1857 in Rowan County, NC; DOD 1/10/1917 in Granite Falls, Caldwell County, NC). Ellen died first at age 59 yrs of "apoplexy cerebral" and William Zebulon Vance Honeycutt died the next year in 1918 of "angina pectoris" and "Bright's disease". They had Gertrude Hester Honeycutt, Carrie Mentors Honeycutt, Renn Galloway Honeycutt, Earl Douglas Honeycutt.

9) Sarah Ada Honeycutt (DOB 10/1/1864 in Iredell County, NC; DOD 4/11/1925 in Summerville, Dorchester County, SC) married Horace Hamilton Hendley (DOB 8/5/1867 in SC; DOD 8/6/1955 in Dorchester County, SC). They had Sallie Lou Hendley, Coit Taylor Hendley, Myrtle Roberta Hendley.

10) Emma E. Honeycutt (DOB 6/19/1868 in Iredell County, NC; DOD 11/1/1947 in Iredell County, NC). Never married. She and her older sister Laura Isabelle Honeycutt lived together.

11) Walter S. Honeycutt (DOB 7/2/1870 in Iredell County, NC; DOD 2/11/1880 in Iredell County, NC).
