He married Rachel Pauline Cassada on 11/1/1855 in Henderson County, NC.

The name "Cassada" is spelled so many different ways and I'm not sure what it really should be. Here are the many different spellings I came across:

1850 U.S. Census of Buncombe County, NC, Roll M432_622, Pg 302, Image 227, Lines 1-7, Dwelling 1424, Family 1424, "Capoda, Jane" (sic, Ancestry.com has it indexed as Capoda", Living next door to James and Sarah Ensley (how Samuel Ensley met Rachel Cassada and they got married)

Ansley
Ainsley
Ensly
Ansly

etc.

He enlisted in the Confederate Army on 5/16/1862 as a Private in the NC 60th Regiment, Co. F. He was detailed to the Confederate hospital at Murfreesboro, TN in November,1862, possibly for being wounded. He had rejoined his company by March, 1863 after having been taken as a prisoner of war by the Union Army when Murfreesboro fell on 1/5/1863. He was held at Camp Chase, Columbus, Ohio and released to the Confederate forces in an exchange of prisoners on 3/28/1863 in Louisville, KY. According to the family, he remained with the Confederate Army until April 1865 when he and some others decided to desert and join the Union Army. They were making their way to the Union forces when the War ended. Another recollection is that he participated in the Battle of Look Out Mountain, and brought a spent bullet home as a souvenir.

I don't know why they are buried at different cemeteries. When Rachel died, he still had 8 minor children at home. The youngest were sent to the homes of the eldest 2 daughters and raised. Later, they lived with older siblings who had established their own homes.

His great granddaughter, Lillian Vianna Conner Reese, had a few memories of him and said he was a "good ole thing." He died at 67 years old and is buried in an unmarked grave in the Flint Hill Methodist Church cemetery. His great granddaughter, Lillian Vianna Conner Reese, said that he was gone for 7 years during the War but finally did make it back. I have no explanation for why he was gone an additional 3 years (if the family story is true).

Samuel Ensley died 9/14/1896 in Madison County, NC and is buried at Flint Hill Methodist Church cemetery, 9999 State Rd 1743 (Flint Hill Rd), Alexander, Buncombe County, NC.

Some Digital Scrapbooking Pages

Our little grandniece, Brooke, took her first ballet class. Her mother said she didn't cooperate and danced to her own tune without listening to the teacher. This photo is so cute and does show her taking a seat when she's supposed to be twirling. LOL! I tried to creat the sense of a twirling dancer with this digital scrapbook page.

Our grandniece and grandnephew, Savannah and Will, are beating the heat in their baby pool, swimsuits and popsicles! I created this digital scrapbook layout with the bright colors in their swimsuits.

In this layout, our grandnephew, Will, was playing in the dirt (just like his Daddy did!) and I wanted to make this a fun digital scrapbook page. I used stripes reminiscent of layers of soil. The base paper was colorfully stained wood ship lap. Dirt Was Made To Play In!

The Conner Family

I have done an extensive post on Ervin McCoy Conner and his wife, Mary A. Rhodes athttp://sharonscrapbook.blogspot.com/2009/09/ervin-mccoy-conner-married-mary.html

I have done one on McCoy Conner (Mack Coy Conner) and Margaret Alice Ensley at

Now I would like to do a post on the children of McCoy Conner (Mack Coy Conner) and Margaret Alice Ensley:
Lillian Vianna Conner (1/9/1887-1/15/1984) married Bailey Bright Reese
William S. Conner (5/1889-?) married ?Minnie Conner (5/19/1889-5/24/1979) married Lee Franklin Fowler
James Coy Conner (9/23/1892-2/24/1987) married Lillie Mae Baldwin
Hattie Louester Conner (9/10/1893-10/1974) married James Lewis Holt
Floyd Washington Conner (2/2/1895-3/22/1936) married Ora Dell Waldrop
William Jeter Conner (6/15/1897-?) married Virgia Elizabeth Trantham "Virgie"
Alice Conner
(3/1899-?) married ?Fred Conner (10/11/1901-2/21/1968) married Inez Davis
Gertrude "Gertie" Conner (7/15/1903-3/1987) married Ollie Clyde Knipp

1) My Great Grandmother was Lillian Vianna Conner and she married Bailey Bright Reese. I have done an extensive post on them at

2) William S. Conner (DOB 5/1889 in Madison County, NC; DOD ? in ? ) I have not found anything on William S. Conner so I don't know if he survived into adulthood or who he may have married or when he died. If you notice, he and Minnie Conner were both born in May, 1889. This would indicate that they were twins. On the other hand, there is NO Minnie listed in the 1900 Census so it's possible that William S. Conner was actually Minnie Conner and there was some kind of confusion on the part of the census taker. Here is the 1900 Census:

1900 U.S. Census of Meder Fork (sic, should be Meadow Fork), Spring Creek Township, Madison County, NC, Roll T623-1205, Pg 10A, ED 86, Ancestry.com has indexed as "Conner, M.A." or "Canner, M.A."

Conner, Morley A. or Money A. (sic, should be Conner, Margaret A.), W, F, Born Oct _blank_, 42 yrs old, Married 20 yrs, 10 children with 8 still living, born in NC, Father born in NC, Mother born in NC
Conner, Sillie (sic, indexed as Sillie but should be Lillie Conner), Daughter, W, F, born in Jan _blank_, 13 yrs old, Single, Born in NC, Father born in NC, Mother born in NC
Conner, Wm. S., Son, W, M, May, _blank_, 11 yrs old, Born in NC, Father born in NC, Mother born in NC

Conner, Alice, Daughter, W, F, Born in March _blank_, 1 yrs old, Born in NC, Father born in NC, Mother born in NC

3) Minnie Conner (DOB 5/19/1989 in Cincinnati, Ohio; DOD 5/24/1979 in Madison County, NC). In his younger days, Mack Conner attended some kind of political rally at a church. He was a Democrat. He was standing outside the church listening at the window. The speaker said something like, "You'll never find a man as fine as ________." Great Great Grandpa Mack yelled "You are looking at such a man now!" He disrupted the meeting and he had to leave so he wouldn't be arrested for disturbing the peace. They moved to Ohio to avoid being arrested. Their daughter, Minnie Conner, was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. While in Ohio, a woman was murdered and the description of the murderer fit Great Great Grandpa Conner and he was new in the area. One of the witnesses said there was a scar on the murderer's face and Mack didn't have a scar. Also the sheriff called back to Marshall and they gave him a good character reference and told him he could come on back home. If it hadn't been for that scar and his good reputation he could have been hung for a murderer. They moved back home and the rest of their days were spent in Madison County, NC.

Minnie married Lee Franklin Fowler (DOB 6/17/1887 in Hurricane, Haywood County, NC; DOD 4/22/1978 in Madison County, NC) around 1906.

My Great Aunt Margaret Alice Reese Young (daughter of Lillian Vianna Conner and Bailey Bright Reese) remembered vividely how Gertie ran down the hall yelling, "Lily, my baby is dead, my baby is dead." Margaret also remembered how they laid the baby out on a table placed in the hall with nickles over his eyes to keep them closed. She said the baby looked just like a doll.
