Mystery Monday - William Alexander Craigo and Samantha Wilson

I am related to this family very distantly. I was researching William "Billy" Rees and his children when I came across this story.

The Greenville News, Greenville, SC, 2/12/1933, Pg 2, "Inquests In Two Deaths Are Set"
Craigo Inquiry Tomorrow Morning - Knight Death Be Probed Tuesday
Two recent violent deaths in Greenville county will be formally investigated by Coroner George W. McCoy at inquests early this week.
An inquiry in the death of William A. Craigo, City View, who was killed by a Piedmont and Northern train at a crossing in Poinsett mill community last Saturday night will be held at 10 o'clock tomorrow morning.
Mr. Craigo's body was not identified until Sunday, when R.F. (Robert Fleet Craigo) and E.L. Craigo (Euel L. Craigo), brothers of the dead man, went to the Thomas McAfee mortuary to aid in identifying the body. They discovered it was their brother who had been killed.

The Greenville News, Greenville, SC, 2/6/1933, Pg 3, "Craigo Offer To Identify Dead Man, Find He's Brother"
Inquest To Be Set Today In Train Accident Death - Funeral Tomorrow
E.L. and R.F. Craigo, former deputy sheriffs of Greenville county, offered their impersonal services at the Thomas McAfee funeral home yesterday morning in the identification of an unknown dead man and discovered, with a shock, that the man was their brother, William A. Craigo, 49, of City View.
The brother of the former officers was almost instantly killed early Saturday night when he was struck by a Piedmont and Northern freight train near a railway crossing in Cripple Creek on the edge of the Poinsett mill village. Before a Thomas McAfee ambulance, summoned by the train crew, arrived the accident victim was dead.
His left arm was severed at the elbow and his skull was fractured and his shoulders were mangled. He was taken to the funeral home Saturday night and preliminary efforts to identify him failed. The two Craigo brothers, thinking that their knowledge of people in the county would be of service in identification, visited the funeral home yesterday morning.
The inquest into the death will be set by Coroner Clyde W. McCoy today following his completion of investigation.
Mr. Craigo was walking along the railway tracks when the accident occurred, according to the story told the coroner by C. Tannery, flagman of the freight. The flagman was perched on the foremost of a line of box cars beings pushed toward the city Piedmont and Northern station by the engine. The freight passed the crossing and the light thereat before the flagman noticed the figure on the tracks. Tannery said that the crossing light dazed him and made him unable to see the figure in the shadows. He said that as soon as he saw the man he yelled to him and gave his emergency signal as a warning. Unheeding, the man walked on, he said, and in a moment the train struck him.
Mr. Craigo was a native of Buncombe county, N.C. and had lived in Greenville 35 years. His family, particularly his two brothers, are well known in city and county.
The victim's wife died seven years ago.
Surviving him are one daughter, Mrs. Earnest Campbell, of Gaffney; one son, Robert Craigo, of Greenville county; three sisters, Mrs. R.A. Southerlin, of City View; Mrs. John Cunningham of Greenville county, and Mrs. Madden Gentry, of Greeneville, TN; and four brothers, E.L. and R.F. Craigo, of City View; L.J. Craigo, of Greenville county, and T.C. Craigo, of Monaghan.
Funeral services will be held from the City View Baptist church at 11 o'clock tomorrow morning, with the Rev. J.A. Willis officiating with the assistance of the Rev. E. B. Crain. Interment will be in the Graceland cemetery. The body will be carried to the home of his brother, E.L. Craigo, on McDade Street, City View, at 11 o'clock this morning. Further announcements concerning funeral services will be made later by Thomas McAfee, Funeral Director.

My question is why was he walking the railroad track and didn't respond to the sounds of the train and the warning shout? His son had died in 1923, his wife died in 1927, his remaining children were adults... is it possible that he intended to kill himself by train? Evidently no one had missed him because his two brothers went to see if they could identify the body NOT because they thought it was their brother, but because they had been in law enforcement and wondered if they could identify the body based on their knowledge of the neighborhood. We may never know.

Either way, it was a very sad story.

Mystery Monday - Cecil Christy Patrick, Sr. and Lean Marie Allen

This family is NOT related to me by blood but I came across their story while working on one of my Reese lines. Here is how I came into it:

William "Billy" Reese (DOB About 1800 in Spartanburg County, SC; DOD 5/29/1863 in Madison County, NC) married Mary "Polly" Jane Freeman (DOB About 1801 in Henderson County, NC; DOD 2/1884 in Madison County, NC) had a daughter named Alsey M. Alsey M. Reese (DOB About 1832 in Buncombe Couty, NC; DOD About 1898 in Buncombe County, NC) married Andrew Jackson Massey (DOB About 1825 in NC; DOD About 1898 in NC). They had a son named Wallace Reese.

Wallace H. Massey (aka Wallace N. Massey) was born About 1871 in NC.

He married his first wife on 6/2/1890 in Madison County, NC at the age of 19 years old. He married Jane Moore. Jane was born About 1871 in Tennessee to Anderson Moore (1847-1949) and Biddie E. Riddle (1852-1917).

Wallace and Jane Moore had 3 children:

1) Lillian Ann Massey (DOB 3/24/1889 in NC; DOD 12/12/1984 in San Joaquin County, CA) married Marcus Samuel Gaddy (DOB 9/30/1885 in NC; DOD 2/4/1942 in CA). Lillie was born in 1889, a year before they married so I wonder if she really WAS Massey's daughter. I assume she was Jane Moore's daughter as Jane's parents raised Lillie after Jane died and she went by Lillian Massey.

2) Andrew Massey (DOB 6/1894 in NC; DOD ? in ? ) married ? .

3) Bohmas Massey (DOB 1/1899 in NC; DOD ? in ? ) married ? .

Jane Moore died sometime between the birth of her last son, Bohmas in January, 1899 and the 1900 U.S. Census taken in June, 1900. She may have died in childbirth. I could not find Wallace H. Massey in the 1900 U.S. Census but I found his three children living with his wife's parents. I was not able to follow Andrew and Bohmas Massey any further so I don't know if they lived to adulthood.

Rosa L. Massey, Granddaughter, F, W, 2 yrs old (DOB 1908), Born in NC, Both parents born in NC

I have not been able to establish Dora Carter Massey's death. It's possible they divorced and she remarried but she may have died between 1910-1920. Rosa Massey was living with her father and his third wife in the 1920 U.S. Census. Since he married a third time and Rosa is with him, it seems to indicate that Dora Carter and the twin boys died between 1910 U.S. Census and his third marriage in 1916.

Wallace Massey married his third wife, Mary Emma Best, on 5/28/1916 in Buncombe County, NC. Mary Emma Best was born About 1871 in NC. I couldn't determine her parents.

Mary Emma Best had been married prior to Wallace Massey to William M. Patrick (DOB 2/4/1867 in Haywood County, NC; DOD 2/6/1914 in Haywood County, NC). She and her first husband had 2 children:

1) Minnie Lee Patrick (DOB About 1900 in NC; DOD ? in ? ) married Roland Mannas Miller (DOB 8/11/1894 in Chreokee County, SC; DOD 6/1973 in Richmond County, GA) and they had Hazel Margarette Miller and Charles Wesley Miller, Sr.

And here is where the story occurs! We are finally there!

Cecil Christy Patrick, Sr. married Lena Marie Allen and they had six children:

1) Cecil Christy Patrick, Jr. (DOB 12/9/1928 in Gaffney, Cherokee County, SC; DOD 12/20/1978 in Union County, SC) married Carol Carter.

2) Margaret Patrick (DOB 7/5/1930 in SC; DOD 3/23/2008 in Moore, Spartanburg County, SC) married James J. Freeman.

4) Paul Dean Patrick (DOB 6/27/1934 in Union County, SC; DOD 7/27/2014 in Spartanburg County, SC) married Joyce Farr.

5) Patrick (living)

6) Patrick (living)

What caught my attention was that Cecil Christy Patrick, Sr. died fairly young at 46 years old. He lived in Union County, SC but died in Asheville, NC. Then I saw the death certificate and I had to try to find out what happened.

Removal 4/1/1955 to Union County, SC

He was shot in the head by a woman in a parking lot!?! That had to be in the newspapers. So I looked it up and here is what I found:

Asheville Citizen-Times, Asheville, Buncombe County, NC, 4/3/1955, Pg 7, "Woman Charged With Murder in Fatal Shooting"
A Buncombe coroner's jury today recommended that Mrs. Nita Kathleen Worley, 31, of Union, S.C., be held for grand jury action in the death Thursday night of Cecil C. Patrick, 46, of Union, S.C.
Detective Capt. Harold F. Brownlee said Mrs. Worley has been charged with murder and is being held without bond. The coroner's jury found Patrick died of a bullet wound in the head. Patrick was shot about 11:45 p.m. with a .38 cal. revolver while seated in his car with Mrs. Worley, a police report said.
Following the inquest yesterday W.G. Rush, who had been registered at Hotel Asheville at the same time of Patrick, was released as a material witness by Dr. P.R. Terry, Buncombe County coroner, and told he could return to South Carolina.
Rush had testified at the inquest that he and Patrick checked into the hotel and that Patrick went immediately to bed. Rush left with two dollars of Patrick's money to buy a pint of whisky, he told the jury. Returning to the hotel, Rush said, he went to bed and went to sleep. When he woke up three or four hours later, he said Patrick was dressed and said he was going out.
He returned with a third man Rush said he did not know and the three drank about half the pint.
Later, Patrick went out, Rush said saying he was going to get a woman and Rush refused an invitation to join him. "That's the last I saw of the pint of whisky. It was the last time I saw him, too, until a little while ago." (The jury and witnesses had viewed Patrick's body at Berryman's Funeral Home during the day.)
Detective E.F. Chesley of the Asheville Police Department, testified a statement he read was given by Mrs. Worley. It said she met Patrick in the hotel corridor and they went to her room, had some drinks and he showed her his pistol, saying he had several thousand dollars on him.
According to the statement, Patrick put the gun under the woman's pillow while they were in the room. Then they went out, Patrick taking the gun, and went down the elevator to a restaurant in the hotel.
Then they went to Patrick's car in the hotel lot and drove out on N.C. Highway 81 where Patrick fired the gun out of the car window.
Then they drove to the Silver Slipper eating place and Patrick asked her to put the gun in her dress pocket and she did. They had some beer, according to the statement, and the woman did not remember how long they were there. She said Patrick asked her to put the gun in her pocket because he couldn't lock his car.
Then they drove to the Haywood Street Grill and had some more beers, Patrick having put the gun in the glove compartment. This was about 11:30 p.m., she said in the statement.
The two then drove to the hotel parking lot again and Patrick "fooled" with the gun and then handed it to her and said "You're chicken if you don't pull the trigger." She said she pulled the trigger with the gun pointing at him just the way he'd handed it to her, pointing at his head.
"I did what he told me to do," her statement read.
Patrick's body was sent yesterday to Union, S.C. for funeral services and burial.

Asheville Citizen-Times, Asheville, NC, 4/27/1955, Pg 13, "Woman Gets 3-5 Years In Death"
Mrs. Nita Kathleen Worley, 31, of Inman, S.C., received three-to-five years in State Prison after pleading guilty to a charge of involuntary manslaughter yesterday in Buncombe Superior Court.
Mrs. Worley had been indicted on a murder charge in connection with the fatal shooting last March 1 of Cecil C. Patrick, 46, of Union, S.C., in Patrick's parked automobile.
The lesser plea was accepted by District Solicitor Robert S. Swain and evidence was heard during the afternoon session of court by Judge Zeb. V. Nettles.
Investigating officers had reported that Patrick was shot through the head with a foreign-made automatic pistol as he and Mrs. Worley were seated in his automobile in the Hotel Asheville parking lot on Walnut St.
Witnesses testifying yesterday said Mrs. Worley told them following the shooting that Patrick held the gun toward her, handle first, and said she was "chicken" if she didn't pull the trigger.

Despite being married with six children (the youngest was a young teen), Cecil C. Patrick, Sr. had gone out "looking for a woman". He found one and was drinking with her and, for some reason, seemed fixated on his gun. The only two who had knowledge of what happened was his buddy who says he went and bought the whiskey, they drank and he "went to bed". Then there is the woman. We only have her statement about what happened. Was it just due to drinking and an accident? Or was it more? We don't know but the end result was Patrick was killed in an embarrassing incident that had to add to his family's distress. So sad for Lena and their children!

When I saw how he died I checked the newspapers and found the tragic story.

The Taylor Daily Press, Taylor, TX, 1/5/1940, Pg 1 "Alcohol Solution Kills Two, Six In Critical Condition"
Verdict of "Accidental Death By Wood Alcohol, Self Administered" Returned Fort Worth, Tex., Jan 5 - Six inmates of the new U.S. Public Health Service Narcotic Farm remained in critical condition today and two others were dead from the effects of drinking wood alcohol solution drained from the radiator of a hospital truck. The dead were Ernest Hurley, 31, of Texarkana, Tex., and B.F. Dare, 36, of Hector, Ark. Hurley was admitted to the hospital for treatment in July, 1939, and Dare three months earlier. Dr. W.F. Ossenfort, director of the hospital, declined to reveal the names of the six others who became ill. The eight complained of illness Thursday morning, and several hours later one of them admitted drinking the radiator solution Wednesday night. Justice of the peace Gus Brown returned a verdict of "accidental death by wood alcohol, self administered" in the inquests for Hurley and Dare. Dr. Ossenfort declared that the men were not aware that the alcohol was poison, and said that all eight might have been saved if hospital attendants had known earlier of the cause of their ailment.

1/5/1940, "Anti-Freeze Drinking Causes Two Deaths Fort Worth, Tex."
Jan. 5 - An investigation into circumstances surrounding the drinking of antifreeze by eight inmates of the U.S. Public Health Service hospital near here, and the deaths late yesterday, of two of the men was launched today by a board of physicians. Ernest Hurley, 31, of Texarkana, and B.F. Dare, 36, of Rector, Ark., died from the poison.

Pampa Daily News, Pampa, TX, 1/5/1940, "One Dead and Six Ill From Drinking Anti-Freeze Alcohol"
Fort Worth, Jan. 5 - Six inmates of the United States public service hospital were ill today from the effects of drinking Anti-Freeze solution which, Dr. W.F. Ossenfort, medical officer in charge, said brought death to Ernest Hurley of Texarkana, Tex., and B.F. Dare of Hector, Ark. Justice of the peace Gus Brown yesterday returned an inquest verdict of "accidental death by wood alcohol self administered" in the death of Hurley. One of the inmates was described by Dr. Ossenfort today as being in a critical condition. The others are expected to recover. "I believe they drank the concoction for a stimulant," Dr. Ossenfort said, "I don't believe they knew it was poison." The hospital would not reveal the names of the six inmates.

What happened to Freeble Dare? How do you get so low you would drain a radiator to get alcohol? Was he having problems before he married Berdie? He was 27 yrs old when he got married so he probably did have problems with alcohol before his marriage but that begs to ask why Bertie Freeman married him? Or did he not show problems with alcohol until after their 6 year old daughter died? I can imagine losing a child like that, would send anyone over the edge. I have no idea how Flora Lee Dare died as Ancestry.com doesn't have Arkansas death certificates so I don't know how little Flora died. She was Birdie's only child which is even more tragic. But Birdie survived and remarried and Freeble died an early death due to alcoholism and accidental methanol poisoning.

A Sad Story - Edward Shafter Scroggins and Hettie Jewel Dickson

I came across a sad story in working with my genealogy. This young man is not related to me. But the story was so sad that I put together his story.

Edward Shafter Scroggins, Sr. (aka Ed Scroggins, Eddie Scroggins) was born 6/10/1899 in Conway County, Arkansas to Thomas W. Scroggins (DOB 1/6/1856 in Conway County, AR; DOD 9/6/1926 in Conway County, AR) and Rose Ann Reed (aka Rosa Ann Reed, Rosanna Reed, Rose Ann Reid, Rosanna Reid)(DOB 5/5/1859 in Izard County, AR; DOD 3/11/1946 in Van Buren County, AR). Thomas and Rose Scroggins had 8 children, all boys! They were James Allen Scroggins (1878-1947), William Columbus Scroggins (1880-1951), Franklin Scroggins (1881-1900), Thomas Chester Scroggins (1882-1940), Joseph Henry Scroggins (1892-1956), Robert Henson Scroggins (1894-1918), George Louis Scroggins (1897-1900), and Edward Shafter Scroggins.

Franklin Scoggins died at the age of 19 yrs old in 1900 when Ed Scroggins would have been about 1 year old. In the same year, little 3 yr old George Louis Scroggins died! Joseph Henry Scroggins was a WWI veteran and survived. Robert Henson Scroggins was killed in WWI in 1918. So after Ed was born, 2 of his brothers died, a third one died in 1918 and another one was in the War but survived.

As Ed S. Scroggins grew into a teenager, he began to have problems and it all seemed to be related to drug addiction. He was frequently in the newspaper and here are the articles I found on him.

Daily Arkansas Gazette, Little Rock, AR, 1/26/1916, Pg 8, "Prefers Reform School"
Ed Scroggin, 17 years Old, Sentenced for Using Drugs
Ed Scroggin, 17 years old, yesterday was sentenced to a year and a day in the Missouri Training School for Boys by Judge Jacob Trieber in the United States District Court, for violation of the Harrison narcotic act. He was convicted of a similar charge about a year ago and released on his promise to quit using drugs. It was learned that he continued the habit and he was ordered into court yesterday. Scroggins said he would rather go to a reform school to be cured of the habit than to a hospital, because he "could be learning something" in school. Judge Trieber told the boy that he would recommend a pardon as soon as he is convinced Scroggin is cured.

He married Hettie Jewell Dickson (aka Hettie Jewell Dixon) on 8/10/1918 in Conway County, AR.

Brown and brought back to Little Rock. Scroggins, an alleged dope fiend, is being held at the Pulaski county jail. He skipped his bond when indicted. Several hundred dollars worth of medical instruments were stolen from the doctor's office.

On January 4: ...and Ed Scroggins, charged with grand larceny.

Arkansas Democrat, Little Rock, AR, 2/8/1921, Pg 6, "Violates Parole, Is Sent To Jail"
About a month ago Judge John W. Wade's heart was touched when Ed Scroggins of Little Rock, who the police say is a dope fiend, told of his young wife and child and declared his intention to lead a better life. Scroggins was charged with stealing several surgical instruments from Dr. Homer Higgins, Urquhart building, and the court told the accused man he would be paroled with the understanding that he would support his family and pay for the instruments he had stolen. Monday afternoon Scroggins was before the court a second time on the charge, and this time Judge Wade sentenced to 10 months in jail and fined him $10 in addition. Scroggins had not lived up to the terms of his parole. The police told the court that he had been full of dope or drunk most of the time and had not worked to support his wife and child.

Arkansas Democrat, Little Rock, AR, 1/15/1922, Pg 6 "Five white men caught in the police dragnet" Five white men caught in the police dragnet Chief Rotenberry threw out early in the week in an effort to round up house prowlers and persons who have been stealing article from automobiles parked on Main street while their owners or drivers were attending to business, and all of whom confessed to taking one or more articles, had a hearing before Judge Hale Saturday morning. Harry Lamont, Bill Foster, E. Scroggins and Frank Strong were each fined $25 and costs and sentenced to spend four months on the county farm, and S.R. King, who had been of considerable aid to the police in recovering a portion of the loot stolen, was fined $10 and costs and sentenced to spend 60 days on the county farm.

Little Rock Daily News, Little Rock, AR, 1/16/1922, Pg 5, "George Schatszy Held For Larceny" George Schatszy, white youth, will be arraigned before Municipal Judge Hale tomorrow morning charged with the theft of a kodak from a room in the Stanley apartments, occupied by C.C. Holland. The kodak was found in North Little Rock by City Detective Lewis, and had been pawned, according to the officer, by Ed Scroggins, alleged "dope-head", who is at present serving a county farm sentence on a charge of robbery. Scroggins told the officers that he had been given the kodak by Schatszy, with instructions to pawn it and "split the proceeds." Scroggins will be returned from the county farm to testify in the case.

Daily Arkansas Gazette, Little Rock, AR, 1/11/1923, Pg 8, "Suspect Arrested"
Suspect Arrests - Ed Scroggins was arrested yesterday morning by Detective Sergeants Moore and Hay and is held for investigation. Scroggins, the police say, entered a rooming house at 1513 State Street Tuesday night and stole some clothing and a handbag of surgical instruments. The officers said they recovered all the stolen loot from Scroggins, who denies his guilt. Scroggins said a strange negro gave the loot to him.

Arkansas Democrat, Little Rock, AR, 1/29/1923, Pg 6
Ed Scroggins of Little Rock was adjudged insane by a jury in the First Division, Circuit Court, Monday afternoon, and ordered committed to the state hospital. Scroggins was on trial for burglary and grand larceny. His attorneys interposed an insanity plea. If a cure is effected at the state institution, Scroggins will face trial on the two charges.

So in January Ed Scroggins was found insane and committed to the state hospital. He died less than 3 months later on 4/16/1923. Ancestry.com didn't have death certificates for Arkansas so I don't know how he died.

I wish I knew how Ed Scroggins got addicted to alcohol and drugs and what was it that killed him in the end. It seems he had a stable family. His father and mother were both alive when Eddie died. They lived in Conway County, AR all their lives. He had 7 brothers, and he was the youngest of those brothers. Three of the brothers died young. Ed married and had two children. But what is documented on paper doesn't tell us why he imploded. It doesn't look like he ever held down a job. Did the deaths of his brothers affect him? His problems preceded the Great War. Why wasn't Ed in WWI? He would have been 18-19 yrs old. He also had a brother who served and survived. Did that affect him? I just hope his wife and two children were able to go on and not have Eddie's sad end haunt them.

Something happened. Charlie Lunsford shot and killed his brother-in-law, Lawrence Spivey. He claimed self defense. Here are the two articles in the newspaper that told the story. I couldn't find any more so he must not have been charged.

Asheville Citizen Times, Asheville, Buncombe County, NC, 11/1/1938, Pg 6, "Man Surrenders To Officers On Slaying Charge"
Murphy, Oct. 31-Charlie Lunsford, 34, who is alleged to have shot and killed Lawrence Spivey, 25, his brother in law, with a shotgun Sunday night is being held in the county jail here. Lunsford officers said surrendered to officers following the shooting. A preliminary hearing for Lunsford will be held within the next few days. Officers said that Lunsford got into an argument and that Lunsford shot Spivey when the latter advanced upon him with a knife. Spivey was shot in the side with a charge from a shotgun. Lunsford told officers he shot in self defense.

Asheville Citizen Times, Asheville, Buncombe County, NC, 4/11/1939, Pg 6, "Judge Nettles Continues Two Murder Cases"
Murphy, April 10 - Judge Zeb V. Nettles, of Asheville, presiding over Cherokee county superior court here Monday ordered postponed until the August term trial of the cases in which Charles Frazier, 34, of Andrews, and Charles Lunsford, of the Peachtree community of Cherokee county, are charged with murder... Lunsford's case was schedules to go on trial during the second week of court. Lunsford allegedly shot and killed his brother-in-law, Lawrence Spivey, 25, of the Peachtree community, on October 30, 1938, at Lunsford's home following a quarrel between the two. Lunsford said Spivey had used sharp words in speaking to his (Lunsford's) sister. Following the shooting, Lunsford gave himself up to Policeman Neil Snead in Murphy. The case was continued from the November term of court.
