Obituary of Thad Dean Kelly
Thad Dean Kelly (November 17, 1925 - August 25, 2009), a well known local volunteer, died of multiple medical complications Tuesday, August 25, 2009, at Baptist Village in Waycross. He was 83 years old.
Mr. Kelly was the youngest of the four children of John Wesley Kelly and Pearl Elizabeth Radcliffe Kelly. Born in Spartanburg, South Carolina, he attended public schools and was graduated from Spartanburg High School. Drafted into the U.S. Army, he was sent to Korea where he served until he was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant.
He attended the University of South Carolina and earned the B.A. degree. He was employed first by International Paper Company and several years later by the Department of Defense. He retired in 1987 and moved to Waycross where he had family, his sister and brother-in-law, Catherine and Quay Walters.
As a member of the First United Methodist Church in Waycross, he was a regular participant in Church activities. After a short time, he became known as the person to call on when something needed to be done. "Thad was always there for them, always willing, helping with wonderful grace, caring with a from-the-heart attitude" wrote Lynn Allen, administrative assistant at the Church.
Mr. Kelly was a leader as well as a volunteer. He was president of the Waycross chapter of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. At his Church, he was president of the Arthur Moore Sunday School Class, president of the Booth Memorial Sunday School Class, president of the Chancel Choir, and treasurer of the Church. Most of these responsibilities were held multiple times.
Among the survivors are four nephews, Gerald Kelly of Varnville, SC, Michael Kelly of Spartanburg, SC, Thomas Kelly of Murrells Inlet, SC, and John Walters of Chesterfield, MO.
A service celebrating his life will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 19, at First United Methodist Church, Waycross. His ashes will be disbursed privately on Tuesday.
In keeping with Mr. Kelly's love of music, the Thad Kelly Memorial Music Fund has been established at First United Methodist Church, 410 Williams Street, Waycross, GA 31501-3067. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial gift to his music fund, or to the favorite charity of the donor
