Architecture

"Googie" architecture is known by many different names: Jet Age, Doo-Wop, Space Age, Populuxe and even Coffee Shop Modern. Overall, this style was defined by the modern, space-age look that can be seen in the 1960s cartoon show, 'The Jetsons.' Googie was meant to be futuristic, modern and, above all, flashy. The boomerang and amoeba shapes were popular. Large windows or glass walls, upswept roofs, vaulted ceilings were part of the look.

Atomic Ranch homes were modernist, affordable houses. They started in the 1950's but were still strong in the 1960's.

Split level homes were born in the tract house neighborhoods of the 1950's and were still very popular in 1960's My parents bought a brand new split level in 1967 in a new neighborhood. So I spent the 10 years from 1967 to 1977 in one.

Other typical 1960's houses

Now let's look at some 1960's interiors. I found all my photos doing a Google search and I picked photos that were typical. Things I saw when I was growing up. Hope you enjoy.

Big ugly lamps with huge shades seemed to be in vogue during the 1960's!

Notice how the stove eyes were on are a drawer that could be pulled out when you were cooking.

Notice where the refrigerator is.

The stainless steel sink was new and modern for the 1960s.

The old French Provincial living rooms. Some were done tastefully but so many were pretty hideous. They ended up looking like a bordello. LOL! But it was a style.

Chenille bedspreads

The Bewitched living room was very typical.

Formica countertops

1960's Hairstyles. Teasing and beehives were popular but so were the flip curl and pixies.

I hope these bring back some memories. I even did a 1960's scrapbook using these typical 1960's photos but added photos from our family right in the middle of the others because we were living it. I tried to use 1960s colors, patterns and fonts when making this paper scrapbook. See what you think.

My opening comments. I journaled what I felt about the 1960's and the memories it evokes to me.

This page starts on the news that was breaking in the 1960's

Stan's family and my family taken in the 1960's. I put this page in the middle of the news because we were living it. We WERE right in the middle of it all.

Stan with his siblings and the house they lived in during the 1960's.

Stan in elementary school and with his siblings.

I was born right before the 1960's started. My Dad was an engineer with TVA in Tennessee. They moved him around a good bit while he worked for them so they bought a trailer so that their girls would have the same home no matter what town they were moved to. Much like Lucille Ball and Desi Arnez in the movie, The Long Trailer. Trailers were really taking off in the 1960's

Me in 1961.

Pictures from our town during the 1960's. We moved here in 1968.
