Mystery Monday - Elizabeth Barnes and William Nunnally

Mystery Monday is a blogging prompt by Geneabloggers.com. Mystery Monday is where you can post about mystery ancestors or mystery records – anything in your genealogy and family history research which is currently unsolved. This is a great way to get your fellow genealogy bloggers to lend their eyes to what you’ve found so far and possibly help solve the mystery. Several genealogy bloggers have been using Mystery Monday as an ongoing series including Randy Seaver of Genea-Musings, Kathleen Moore of The Misadventures of a Genealogist and Betty Tartas of Betty’s Boneyard Genealogy Blog. I did extensive research on this line over the last couple of months but was not able to find most of the 11 children of this couple. I found dates on family trees on Ancestry.com but they were not sourced and I want sources. I'm hoping that maybe someone will see this and if they have more information with their sources, they will contact me at Mom25dogs@gmail.com

Elizabeth Barnes was born 9/8/1809 in Rowan County, NC to Richard Gilmer Barnes, III (DOB About 1790 in Rowan County, NC; DOD About 1874 in Davidson County, NC) and Fanny Johnson (DOB About 1787 in Rowan County, NC; DOD About 1854 in Davidson County, NC). Richard Gilmer Barnes, III married Fanny Johnson on 11/21/1808 in Rowan County, NC. Elizabeth was their firstborn and the first of 8 children.

The county was formed in 1753 from the northern part of Anson County. Matthew Rowan, acting governor of North Carolina from 1753 to 1754, was it's namesake. Rowan County was a large pioneer territory in western NC with an indefinite western boundary. Rowan included the entire northwestern sector of North Carolina. Over time, its size was reduced as a number of counties were split off. This began in 1770, when the eastern part of it was combined with the western part of Orange County to become Guilford County, North Carolina. In 1771 the northeastern part of what remained of Rowan County became Surry County. In 1777 the western part of Rowan County became Burke County. In 1788 the western part of the now much smaller Rowan County became Iredell County. In 1822 the eastern part of the county became Davidson County. Finally, in 1836 the part of Rowan County north of the South Yadkin River became Davie County.

Elizabeth Barnes married William Nunnally (DOB 1/22/1806 in Rowan County, NC to Elisha Nunnally and Elizabeth Coates) on 11/16/1830 in Rowan County, NC. They had 11 children:

1) Frances Caroline Nunnally, aka Fannie Nunnally (DOB About 1825 in Davidson County, NC; DOD 4/12/1893 in Davidson County, NC) married William Henry Simmerson (DOB 1819-1821 in Davidson County, NC; DOD About 1898 in Eaton, Lawrence County, NC). They had 3 children: Mary Elizabeth Simmerson married John Hoke Swicegood; Harriet Newell Simmerson married 1st Hiram Lindsey Barnes and 2nd Wilson Cicero Grubb; Samuel Elijah Simmerson married Martha Elizabeth Walser. William Nunnally married a 2nd time to Mary Elizabeth Wood.

2) John H. Nunnally (DOB 6/2/1833 in Davidson County, NC; DOD About 1864) married Mary Elizabeth Toney (DOB 1/1834 in Madison, Monroe County, MO; DOD About 1900 in Yell County, AR) on 2/19/1847 in Lawrence County, AR. They had 3 children: John William Nunnally (DOB About 1858 in Arkansas; DOD ? in ? ); Florence Nunnally (DOB About 1860 in Lawrence County, AR; DOD About 1892 in Yell County, AR) married Andrew Jackson Fletcher; Nancy Elizabeth Nunnally (DOB 3/6/1864 in Arkansas City, Desha County, AR; DOD 1/29/1947) married James Edwin Tapp.

John Nunnally enlisted on 12 Jul 1862 in Smithville, Lawrence County, AR, C.S.A. AR 38th Infantry Regiment, Co. D, Private. After a divided Arkansas seceded from the Union in 1861, it became a strategic target for both North and South because of its location on the Mississippi River and its role as a gateway to the Southwest. Included among the state's more than 750 military engagements were a number of major conflicts.

The war's largest battle west of the Mississippi was fought at Pea Ridge in March 1862. Participating were some 26,000 soldiers. The Union victory dashed Confederate hopes of occupying Missouri.

In December, 1862, more than 11,000 Confederates battled Union forces at Prairie Grove in a failed attempt to prevent federal occupation of Fort Smith.
The control of Arkansas River commerce was at stake when 30,000 Union troops overwhelmed 5,000 Confederates at Arkansas Post in January 1863, while control of the Mississippi figured in the Battle of Helena on July 4, 1863.

Union forces occupied Little Rock on Sept. 10, 1863, despite numerous skirmishes. The state's Confederate government moved its capital to the town of Washington.

In the spring of 1864, 13,000 federal troops headed southwest from Little Rock in an attempt to complete the Union conquest of the state. That failed venture is now known as the Red River Campaign.

Mary Elizabeth Toney Nunnally married a 2nd time to John Harris on 10/18/1867 in Strawberry, Lawrence County, AR and had 3 children: Lucretia Harris (DOB 2/1870 in Eaton, Lawrence County, AR; DOD 1/1949 in Logan County, AR); Mae Mariah Harris (DOB 11/1876 in Yell County, AR; DOD About 1945 in Yell County, AR); Charles Berry Harris (DOB 1/5/1878 in Yell County, AR; DOD 6/25/1937 in Arkansas).

Mary Elizabeth Toney Nunnally Harris married a 3rd time to William Brantley Henry (DOB About 1830 in Madison, Monroe County, MO; DOD ? in ? ) on 1/24/1886 in Yell County, AR. I have no children.

3) Elizabeth Nunnally (DOB About 1836 in Davidson County, NC; DOD ? in ? ) married ? . I have not been able to find source records for her marriage or death.

4) Mary Rachel Nunnally (DOB About 1837 in Davidson County, NC; DOD ? in ? ) married ? . I have not been able to find source records for her marriage or death. I found there is a Mary R. Nunnelly married to Lucas L. Nunnelly but that was Mary Rhoda Ellington and NOT Mary Rachel Nunnally. I haven't found a sourced record of her death.

5) Richard Nunnally (DOB About 1839 in Davidson County, NC; DOD ? in ? ) married ? . I have not been able to find source records for his marriage or death.

6) Rebecca Nunnally (DOB About 1841 in Davidson County, NC; DOD ? in ? ) married ? . I have not been able to find source records for his marriage or death.

7) William Nunnally (DOB About 1842 in Davidson County, NC; DOD ? in ? ) married ? . I have not been able to find source records for his marriage or death.

8) Elisha Nunnally (DOB About 1843 in Davidson County, NC; DOD ? in ? ) married ? . I have not been able to find source records for his marriage or death.

9) James Nunnally (DOB About 1845 in Davidson County, NC; DOD Between 1862-1865 in the War of Northern Aggression) married ? .

10) Samuel Nunnally, aka Sam Nunnally (DOB 4/3/1847 in Davidson County, NC; DOD 2/15/1931 in Eaton, Lawrence County, NC) married Martha Louise Howell (DOB 1/14/1852 in White County, AR; DOD 11/28/1932 in Eaton, Lawrence County, AR) about 1867. They had 14 children: John Nunnally (DOB About 1867 in Lawrence County, AR, DOD After 1880 in Arkansas); William Alexander Nunnally (DOB 6/6/1868 in Eaton, Lawrence County, AR; DOD 1/6/1953 in Lawrence County, AR) married Martha Louella Meadows; Emily Elizabeth Nunnally (DOB 1/18/1870 in Eaton, Lawrence County, AR; DOD About 1916 in Eaton, Lawrence County, AR) married Woody W. Mills; Sarah Nunnally (DOB 8/1/1870 in Eaton, Lawrence County, AR; DOD 5/1871 in Eaton, Lawrence County, AR); Frances Lear Nunnally (DOB 4/11/1874 in Eaton, Lawrence County, AR; DOD 1/4/1950 in Eaton, Lawrence County, AR) married Charley Monroe Jones; Eadie Jane Nunnally (DOB 2/22/1876 in Eaton, Lawrence County, AR; DOD 8/1876 in Eaton, Lawrence County, AR); Arizona May Nunnally (DOB 5/17/1878 in Eaton, Lawrence County, AR; DOD Between 1917-1920 in Eaton, Lawrence County, AR) married Andrew Jackson Ashlock (Ashlock married a 2nd time to Margaret Bearden on 12/9/1920); Samuel Esrom Nunnally (DOB 4/20/1881 in Eaton, Lawrence County, AR; DOD About 1962 in Eaton, Lawrence County, AR) married 1st Josephine Esther Laird, 2nd Mary Davis, 3rd Harriet Fletcher Ward; Mary Louella Nunnally (DOB 2/19/1883 in Eaton, Lawrence County, AR; DOD 5/28/1980 in Eaton, Lawrence County, AR) married 1st Robert E.L. Fletcher and 2nd Eli Newton Campbell; John Zebedee Nunnally (DOB 3/27/1885 in Eaton, Lawrence County, AR; DOD 12/24/1963 in Jonesboro, Craighead County, AR) married Ethel Lizabeth Britton; Joseph Walford Woodward Nunnally (DOB 12/25/1886 in Eaton, Lawrence County, AR; DOD 2/1951 in Tyronza, Poinsett County, AR) married 1st Lillie Maude Robinson and 2nd Maggie MacInnes; James Azro Nunnally (DOB 1/3/1889 in Eaton, Lawrence County, AR; DOD 1/26/1950 in Eaton, Lawrence County, AR) married Mariam Ola Grimes; Lawrence Aston Nunnally (DOB 12/28/1891 in Eaton, Lawrence County, AR; DOD 8/13/1960 in Walnut Ridge, Lawrence County, AR) married Lula Mae Sanders; Clarence Nunnally (DOB 5/11/1893 in Eaton, Lawrence County, AR; DOD 9/1/1893 in Eaton, Lawrence County, AR).

11) Margaret J. Nunnally (DOB About 1848 in Eaton, Lawrence County, AR; DOD ? in ? ) married ? . There was a Margaret Nunnally daughter of Daniel Nunnally also in Lawrence County, AR. I noticed that there is not a Margaret Nunnally with William and Elizabeth in the 1860 U.S. Census (Lawrence County, AR) and she would have only been 11 yrs old so she should be living with her parents. There is just Margaret Nunnally the daughter of Daniel Nunnally. Jesse Alex Ketner married a Margaret J. Nunnally but she was evidently born in 1859 and died of childbirth in 1893. I think this Margaret J. Nunnally was the daughter of Daniel Nunnally and NOT the Margaret Nunnally daughter of William and Elizabeth Barnes Nunnally. I would assume then that Margaret died before the 1860 U.S. Census. If anyone can set me straight, contact me.

I don't have any sources for the 11th child of William Nunnally and Elizabeth Barnes, Margaret J. Barnes.

I worked on this line extensively on the Internet (I live in SC so I couldn't research in Arkansas) and wasn't able to find sources for a lot of of Elizabeth's children. If you have any additional information, comments or corrections, please contact me ag Mom25Dogs@gmail.com. I would be interested sourced information about the Nunnally children.

Hi Sharon,

Just thought I would drop by. I'm not related to you. Good idea for you to post this info on your ancestors because i would think people would pick it up on search engines and come to your site. I need to do this. It helps solve mysteries. Love GeneaBloggers. Been on here for two months. My blog is a work in progress but a good fit for me. As I improve, I hope it will be a better fit for my readers.
Regards, Grant
