Amenuensis Monday - Sophia Barnes

Sophia Barnes

Sophia Barnes was born between 1810-1811 in Rowan County, NC to Gilmer Richard Barnes, III and Fanny Johnson. She was the 2nd of eight children. She was born and lived in a time period where the county was still changing.

The first Europeans to Rowan County came with the Spanish expedition of Juan Pardo in 1567. They built a fort and mission in the native village of the Wateree named Guatari, some where on the Yadkin River. At the time, the area was ruled by a female chief called Guatari Mico. The Spaniards called their village Salamanca in honor of the city of Salamanca in western Spain. The mission was headed by a secular priest named Sebastián Montero. The Spaniards didn't stay long and abandoned the area before 1572.

The county was formed in 1753 from the northern part of Anson County.

Matthew Rowan, acting governor of North Carolina from 1753 to 1754, was it's namesake. Rowan County was a large pioneer territory in western NC with an indefinite western boundary. Rowan included the entire northwestern sector of North Carolina.

Over time, its size was reduced as a number of counties were split off. This began in 1770, when the eastern part of it was combined with the western part of Orange County to become Guilford County, North Carolina. In 1771 the northeastern part of what remained of Rowan County became Surry County. In 1777 the western part of Rowan County became Burke County. In 1788 the western part of the now much smaller Rowan County became Iredell County. In 1822 the eastern part of the county became Davidson County. Finally, in 1836 the part of Rowan County north of the South Yadkin River became Davie County.

This is Rowan County, NC today

James Madison served as President of the United States from 1809-1817 when Sophia was born. Then James Monroe, John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson, Martin Van Buren, William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, James K. Polk, Zachary Taylor, Millard Filmore, Franklin Pierce, James Buchanan, and Abraham Lincoln was President when Sophia died. She lived during the War of 1812 and into the War of Northern Aggression.

The Revolutionary War (1776-1783) had only been over 27 years when she was born. Her father was born in 1780 and her mother was born in 1787. Her grandfathers, who were still alive, had lived through the Revolutionary War. It would have still been very fresh in the family. Her Grandfather Richard Gilmer Barnes, Jr. died in 1834 in Davidson County, NC. Sophia would have been about 24 yrs old and married a few years when he died. Her Grandfather Francis Marion Johnson died about 1846 in Ashe County, NC which is about 5 counties north of Davidson County, NC on the TN border.

Davidson County NC Heritage Book, published 1982, pg 39, #130
"Richard Barnes, b. 1780, d. 1854, was the son of Richard and Catherine (?) Barnes. On 11/21/1808 he married Frances "Fanny" Johnston, b. 1787, d. c1874. They are buried in the Churchland Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery. There is a rock wall around their graves with one rock hand engraved with 'Barnes'. Richard bought his first land, consisting of 260 acres on the North Yadkin River and Ready Run, from Thomas Smith on 12/28/1815. He conveyed this to Thomas P. Ives 10/16/1817 who, in turn, conveyed it to Rowland Crump 9/19/1823. He began purchasing land on Swans Creek and Potts Creek in 11/1818 until, by 1839, he had accumulated over 800 acres. I think their home was between Churchland and Boone's Cave. The children of Richard and Fanny were 1) Elizabeth, m. ? Nunnally; 2) Nancy, m. 7/13/1840 Burgess Thomason; 3) Sophia, b. c1811, m. 1st 4/23/1831 to William Wood, m. 2nd c1848 to Henry Beck; 4) John, b. 11/3/1816, d. 9/19/1892, m. 3/18/1841 Margaret Ratts; 5) Mary (Polly), b. c1820, m. George Beck, b. 10/1828; 6) Samuel W., b. c1822, d. 1896, m. Margaret ?; 7) Fannie, b. 6/29/1824, d. 5/7/1905, m. 8/29/1848 Moses Lamb; 8) Richard, b. c1828, m. Louisa ?. From the history of the Churchland Baptist Church which was organized as Pine Meeting Baptist Church in 1837 with 11 charter members, the names of Richard, Fannie and Nancy Barnes are found among this group. Richard Barnes appointed his son, Samuel W., as executor of his will which was written 9/28/1854. He left the homeplace to his son Richard after his wife's death. He had already conveyed his sons John and Samuel W. 150 acres of land. Richard conveyed his inheritence to his brother, Samuel W., on 8/29/1856. The will of Fanny Barnes, dated 5/16/1874, mentions sons John and Samuel, and daus. Polly and Fanny. I think it safe to assume that the other children had either died or moved from the vicinity.

"Mary (Polly) Barnes, b. c1820, m. George Beck, b. 10/1828. The 1880 Census shows 3 children: Joseph b. c1850; Curtis b. c1859; and Mary b. c1854. After Mary's death George married Amanda Grubb, daughter of John and Susie (Leonard) Grubb.

"Samuel W. Barnes, B. c1822, d. 10/5/1896, married Margaret A. ?, b. c1825, d. 7/1890. They had 4 children: Richard b. c1849; Sarah, m. Ely Leonard; America, b. c1854, m. Richard A. Swicegood, b. c1848 as the son of Richmond Swicegood and Mary (Polly) Miller; William L., b. c1863. Samuel and Margaret separated c1876, and she went to live with her daughter, America Barnes Swicegood. The property was intrusted (sic) to Philip Sowers, and he recorded these deeds in 1909. The 1880 census shows Jonathan and  Albertine Williams and their children living with Samuel W. Barnes.

"Fannie Barnes, b. 6/29/1824, d. 5/7/1905, m. 8/29/1848 Moses Lamb, b. 4/26/1828, d. 4/14/1889. They are buried in Churchland Missionary Baptist Church near her parents. Their children were Mary Elizabeth, b. 6/10/1849, m. 3/13/1873 David Worth Barnes; Lewis F., b. 12/20/1852, d. 3/31/1901, m. Amanda J. Darr, daughter of Henry Darr and Margaret Uphemia Simeson; Sarah F., b. c1859, d. 1882; John M., b. c1859, d. 2/1/1926; George W., b. 3/2/1860, d 3/31/1881; Fannie, b. c1862; Calton M. (Cal), b. 4/18/1867, d. 11/10/1907, m. Mary Emma Modelin." Sources: Rowan County Marriage and deed records, Davidson County marriage, deed, cemetery and church records. Submitted by Mary Jo Shoaf.

James William Wood, Sr. died about 1845 in Davidson County, NC. I know this because their last child, Mary Ann Wood (Marinda Ann Wood, "Mary") was born 5/7/1845 in Davidson County, NC. Sophia was married to her 2nd husband, Henry C. Beck, in the 1850 Census and it shows that they were married within the year of 1850. Henry Beck had been married to Margaret Miranda Maulden (DOB About 1806 in Davie County, NC; DOD About 1849 in Davidson County, NC). They had 9 children, of which 8 were still living with their father in 1850. Sophia Barnes Wood Beck brought 7 of her own children into the marriage. So they had a houseful of 15 children from 20 yrs old to 1 yr old in the 1850 census!

James William and Sarah Caroline Snider Wood had 3 children: Richard Alexander Wood, Frances Wood and Margaret Jane Wood. I was not able to follow Frances and Margaret Jane Wood. But I was able to follow Richard Alexander Wood (DOB 12/8/1861 in Davidson County, NC; DOD 5/8/1940 in Salisbury, Rowan County, NC) married 1st Sarah Harris Walton (DOB 4/9/1866 in Davidson County, NC; DOD 4/10/1908 in Rowan County, NC). They had 11 children: Mittie Lee Wood married 1st William Matthias Shoaf and 2nd George Franklin Siceloff; James Thomas Wood married Emma Rena Coughenoor; Jessie Mae Wood married Arthur Albert Kepley; Pink Columbus Wood married Leoma G. Pinkston; Daniel Webster "Webb" Wood married Zellie Elizabeth Myers; Mackie Leonora "Nora" Wood married Robert Locke Poteat; Notie A. Wood (never married); Adam Wood (died as infant); Samuel Baxter Gray Wood married 1st Bernice Willeford and 2nd Grace Hamrick (neither marriage produced children); Lottie Jane Wood married Ray Thomas Pinkston; Mae Esther Wood (died as infant).

Sarah Harris Walton Wood last child, Mae Esther Wood was born 2/11/1908 and Sarah died 4/10/1908. Then Mae died 6/29/1908. It leads me to believe that Sarah may have died from complications of childbirth. Sarah was buried at Enon Baptist Church, 1875 Enon Church Rd, Salisbury, Rowan County, NC.

Richard didn't stop there! He remarried to Margaret "Maggie" Rebecca Walton (DOB 1/15/1879 in Davidson County, NC; DOD 7/15/1964 in Salisbury, Rowan County, NC). Richard and Maggie had 6 children: Herman Taft "Jake" Wood married Lula Bringle; Ray Gilbert Wood married 1st Ruth Miller and 2nd Blanche Plummer; Polly Ollie Wood married 1st Marvin Love Cline and 2nd William "Bill" Wingate Langston; Council Leo "Lee" Wood married Mary Ruth Park; Richard Alexander "Walt" Wood married Lottie Belle Simpson; Creola Geneva Wood married Thurman Ribelin.

Richard had a total of 17 children with only 2 who died as infants! That was a large family!

After James William Wood died, his wife, Sarah Caroline Snider remarried to John Rastus Mize, Sr, (DOB Between 1842-1843 in NC; DOD About 1895 in Salisbury, Rowan County, NC). and they had 4 children: Hildora "Dora" Belle Wood married William Thomas Walton; John Rastus Mize, Jr. married Alice Lyle McDaniel; Ernest Ledford Mize married Rebecca Jane McDaniel; Callada "Ada" Mize married Clinton C. Honeycutt.
