Blue Ridge Mountains This Fall

My husband and I took two friends for a picnic in the Blue Ridge Mountains this weekend. I made roast beef and provolone sandwiches with mayo and some horseradish. I brought fresh spinach, romaine lettuce, grape tomatoes, carrot and celery sticks. I added some apple slices to make it well rounded. We also had some spreadable cheese and some chips and dips. I made a couple of thermoses of tea to drink. We use a picnic kit that I got for $5 at a yard sale. It has a cooler on wheels with the plates, utensils, etc. I added a tablecloth and matching napkins. It holds everything and has been one of my "best buys".

Anyway we picked up some good coffee this morning and then headed up to the Blue Ridge Parkway to see the Fall foliage. We stopped at the Asheville Farmer's Market on the way up. Stan bought a a fried apple pie and it was soooo good! This is the last weekend in October, it's a fairly warm weekend but it's suppose to turn drastically cooler on Monday. I assumed that would mean the Parkway would have been packed with people. The Asheville Farmer's Market was pretty busy. But the Parkway wasn't crowded. Lot of people but not crowded. It was pretty cloudy and the weather report for Asheville predicted rain (never saw any rain) so maybe that kept people at home. It was about 68-70 in the lower elevations and at home. But in the highest elevation it was about 55 degrees and the color was gone. But in the lower elevations, the valleys and coves, the color was still good. From the top looking down you could see swaths of colors in the valleys. We ate our picnic in a park on the higher elevation. I was comfortable but Stan had not brought a jacket and wore shorts so 55 was a little cool for him. But he was a trooper.
