According to "The Genealogical History of the Langston Family, Prince Family, Holtzclaw Family, Hopkins Family, Starnes Family and The Story of Rehoboth Church" by Zora Langston Atkinson, 1960, Pages 13-22 state that Bernice Prince Dieckmann of Union, SC who was Gist's granddaughter said James Gist Prince enlisted in the Confederate records as a Private Gist Prince in the SC Volunteers, 18th Regiment, Infantry, Company C under Captain T.W. Malone. He enlisted in the Marion District, December 13, 1861. He was reported on the muster roll for 4/30/1862 as on furlough, sick. His name does not appear on any later muster roll of the company. He was admitted to the hospital on 10/6/1862 and he died 30 days later on 11/5/1862 of Typhoid Fever in Richmond, VA. Nancy was pregnant with James Gist Prince, Jr. and she couldn't leave to get his body. Miss Polly Sparks offered to go and bring the body home. He was brought home in a wagon and buried somewhere in Padgett's Creek Baptist Church cemetery. Much later a tombstone was placed but by then, there were only 2 people alive who had attended the funeral and they could not remember where he was buried exactly. The United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) placed the marker and Southern Iron Cross beside the grave of his youngest son, his namesake, James Gist Prince, Jr. I also have information that he was in 18th SC Infantry, Co. C under B. J. Betsill and there is a Private James Prince in the SC Infantry, 10th Regiment, Company M. I would like to know which is true.

Nancy settled his estate and then sold off her portion of the Prince land that she inherited through Gist Prince. She inherited the Johnson and Ray land from her father and mother too. But by the latter part of her life she was very poor and she and her sister, Pauline, lived together to raise their children together. The South was devastated by the War, the 10 years of "Reconstruction" and decades of poverty. She and her sister, Pauline, had married Burnett brothers and after their deaths, they were so impoverished that they ended up having to live together with their children to share expenses.

This is a transcript of the Bill of Sale to settle the estate. Spelling is as it was written and the blanks indicate words I could not decipher. The estate was finally settled in 1866, after the War. Notice how very pitiful her lot is by now and how the most valuable things were the mules and horses. These would have been what farmers would have needed to work a farm at the time. If she sold her mules it meant she couldn't plow herself, her sons weren't old enough, she had no male help or she was so desperate for money and that was her most valuable assets. And what good was inherited land if you couldn't farm it?
