To see photos zoomed up, simply click on them.

Bailey Bright "B.B." Reese (DOB: 1/26/1878 in Joe, Madison County, NC, DOD: 12/10/1949 in Marion, McDowell County, NC) to William Hanes "W.H., Haynes" Reese and Nancy Rebecca Lundsford. Bailey Bright Reese was named after Adam Bright, a preacher and neighbor. Adam Bright was described as full of mischief, jovial, nice looking and tall by Lillian V. Conner Reese. For more on his family see the post on William Hanes Reese & Nancy Rebecca Lunsford.
Here is B. B. Reese with his cousin, Arcemus Reese. Arcemus became a pastor and evangelist.

Lillian "Lily" or "Lilly" Vianna Conner (DOB: 1/9/1887 in Marshall, Madison County, NC; DOD: 1/15/1984 in Marion, McDowell County, NC) was born to McCoy Conner aka Mack Coy Conner (DOB: 7/24/1861 in Henderson County, NC; DOD: 2/7/1950 in Madison County, NC; Buried in Zion Missionary Baptist Church cemetery, Bluff, Madison County, NC) and Margaret Alice Ensley (DOB: 10/12/1859 in Marshall, Madison County, NC; DOD: 2/7/1950 in Madison County, NC; Buried in Zion Missionary Baptist Church cemetery, Bluff, Madison County, NC).

This is Margaret Alice Ensley and Mack Coy Conner, Lily's parents. Evidently they were at a picnic. Notice the tall coconut cake on the table!

Mac and Margaret Alice had 8 children that I know of:
1) Lillian Vianna Conner (see above)

2) Fred Conner (DOB: 11/10/1901 in Joe Madison County, NC; DOD 2/21/1968 in Asheville, Buncombe County, NC; Buried in Zion Missionary Baptist Church cemetery, Bluff, Madison County, NC) married Inez Davis.

3) Floyd Washington Connor (DOB: 2/2/1895 in Bluff, Madison County, NC; DOD: 3/22/1936 in Madison County, NC; Buried in Zion Missionary Baptist Church cemetery, Bluff, Madison County, NC) married Ora Dell Waldrop. He served in WWI as Sgt NC 315 Field Artillery 81 Div. He was gassed and was sick a lot when he came home. He died young due to complications from this. He was a farmer.

4) Gertrude "Gertie" Conner (DOB: 7/15/1903 in Madison County, NC; DOD: 3/1987 in Spartanburg, SC) married Ollie Clyde Knipp. Here are the sisters Gertie (left) and Lilly at Wilford's funeral:

5) William Jeter Connor (DOB: 6/15/1897 in Madison County, NC; DOD: ? in Spartanburg, SC) married Bea.

6) James Coy Connor (DOB: 9/23/1892 in Madison County, NC; DOD: 2/24/1987 in Asheville, Buncombe County, NC) married Lillie Mae Baldwin.

7) Hattie Louester Conner (DOB: 10/9/1893 in Madison County, NC; DOD: 10/1974 in Spartanburg, SC) married a Keith and had Cecil Keith who married Quanita and had on boy, Terry. He also married Ona. Then Hattie married James Lewis Holt. Hattie Conner Keith and James Holt had twins: Beulah and Eula. Beulah married Curtis and had 6 girls, Betty Sue Curtis Cash, Marianne Curtis Catoe, Linda Curtis Smith, Barbara Jean Curtis, Gail Curtis Greene, Peggy Curtis Hammett. Eula married Claude Seagle and had 4 children: Cecil, Patsy, Brenda and Roy. Hattie and James Holt also had James Bruce "Ralph" Holt who married Maxine and had Alan and Gina. Finally they had Faye Holt who married Wallace Lavender and had 4 girls Joan, Debbie, Donna and Jeri.

8) Minnie Conner (DOB: 5/19/1889 in Ohio; DOD: 5/24/1979 in Madison County, NC) married Lee Franklin Fowler.

Lily recalled that she was born in Marshall, NC and her father, Mac Coy Conner, was born in Henderson County, NC. She said Mac's Dad had a big farm in Henderson County. When her Grandfather, McCoy Conner, left to go in "service" in the Civil War he left his land, livestock, etc. and never came back. He died in the War. Lillian said her mother, Margaret Alice Ensley Conner, and her family lived in Madison County. Lillian said that Mac left home when he was 19 years old because his mother was washing dishes and left the dishpan full of water while she went to throw the slop to the hogs. When she came back the pan was empty and hanging on the chair post. She got mad and they argued and he left home.

Lily's first memories were having to get up and rock the cradle when she was so sleepy herself. She said there were 13 brothers and sisters in all. Evidently there were 2 half sisters and 1-2 died young. She was the oldest of "their group of 8". She had all the responsibility and couldn't remember when she first started doing chores and cooking. She remembered making cornbread, cabbage and turnips real young. She remembered her Daddy teaching her how to milk when she was a "teeny young'un."

She told the story about burying the cabbages and how they had to work hard to eat but they never went hungry. They made their own butter, chickens, dried beans, cabbage, "taters", turnips, beets, etc.

Her grandson, Joe E. Young, Jr. asked her what kind of chores she had to do and she said she had to do it all. She split fence rails in quarters, chopped stove wood, grubbing with a mattock, tying corn tops into bundles for fodder, working the fields. She said she did everything but make a "board." She was the oldest and had to lead the younger ones. She said it was hard on her.

She said her father, Mac, was a carpenter and that was what made it so hard on her. He would make sure the crops got in but she and the children were responsible for working the fields. She said her father made their log house. She said she didn't know why he built it the way he did with a breezeway. She said, "You had to walk through the snow to get to the kitchen." She said he would get up about 4:00am and the rest of them started their day about 5:00-5:30am.

Lillian said she never saw her Grandma Ensley but she remembered Grandpa Ensley and said he died when she was about 10-11 years old. She said he was a "good ole thing." She said he was gone for 7 years during the Civil War. But he made it back. She remembered her Grandma Conner and said she "wouldn't say harm of her but she couldn't stand her." She would come to stay and sleep with Lillian. Lillian said she would roust around in the feather and straw ticking. Lillian said Grandma Conner was a good cook but she still hated to see her coming.

Lily remembered playing Skip To My Lou, Hide 'N Seek, making dolls out of rocks and doll beds out of moss. But they didn't get to play much. She didn't go to school much. They didn't have grades so she remembered studying from 3 books...The 4th Reader, Harrington Arithmetic, and some Speller. They only had school 3 months a year and she said she never got to go the whole 3 months at any time. She did learn to read and write. She would just pick up in the books where she left off on the days she got to go back to school.

Mack Conner used to curse a lot until baby Lillian started saying the bad words. Margaret Alice Conner would spank her and told Mack Connor it wasn't right for Lillian to get spanked for every time he cursed so he stopped. Lily Conner said she never heard him curse and never saw him drink. She remembered the worst thing was when he and some men were talking about the Oddfellows Boy's Home. Mack said someone had taken some family's two boys there and what he said made one man mad. He jumped up and said it wasn't true and shut up. Mac replied he'd say what he wanted to and started to get up but the man hit him on the head. They tussled and John Baldwin stepped between them and stopped it. Mac went to the creek to wash his face and saw the blood. He came back and told the man he would settle this later. When he got home, Lilly was sewing and Margaret Ensley Conner was outside. Lillie saw the blood and asked what had happened and he told her. She said he was so mad she thought he would die. He reached to get his gun off the wall and she ran and grabbed his arm and started saying, "No, Daddy, you can't kill him for you'll be running the rest of your life." Alice Ensley Conner came in and helped stop him.

Lillian told of a trip when they moved from Marshall to Meadow Fork in a covered wagon when she was a little girl. There were 3 families in 4 covered wagons and they had to go over Doggett Mountain on a dirt road in the snow. She said it was fun. She was about 14 years old. They put straw in the bed of the wagon for the children and spread quilts on the straw. It took 2 days to go from Marshall to Meadow Fork. On top of Doggett Mountain they found an abandoned cabin. They had to run cattle out of the house, scrape the floor and make pallets to sleep on. They built a fire in the house fireplace. It snowed all night until it was knee deep. The next day they started out and the further they went, the deeper it got. They had to stop the wagon and cut a tree out of the road. They heated rocks and put them in the quilts to help keep them warm. It seems that they leased a 1500 acre fram from Tune Good. He got everything they grew for 3 years and after that he got 1/3 of what they grew. They lived there for about 10-15 years.

She told about how 2 of her uncles, Charlie and Elmore Ensley left to go out West in covered wagons. They were Margaret Alice Ensley Conner's brothers. Charlie landed in Oregon and Elmore in Colorado. They may have followed the Oregon Trail.

She remembered her father, Mack Coy Connor, sitting under an oak tree whittling before church.

Lily said she and Baily B. Reese met in Marshall probably at church although she wasn't sure. She knew that his mother and her mother knew each other. She said she was born and raised in Madison County and lived there all her life until she married Bailey. She said everyone wanted Bailey Bright Reese and she didn't know why he chose her to marry. Lillian said B. B. Reese had gone to work in Knoxville, TN and came home one Saturday. He stopped at one of her sister's houses. Meanwhile she and another sister had gotten into a tiff and she left and walked to her sister's house and saw Bailey Reece. They came home and were married at home. She said she was just wearing an old skirt and calico blouse. He would travel to Knoxville, TN on the train from Hot Springs.

B.B. and Lily are here with their first child, little Estie.

Minnie Louesta "Estie" was born in late 1907. At some point, B.B., Lily and Estie moved to Spartanburg, SC. They were living in Beaumont mill village so, I assume, they moved there for Bailey to work at Beaumont Mill. They lived at 148 Fairview Avenue, Beaumont, Spartanburg, SC. Their son, Paul McCoy Reese, was born on 7/2/1909 in Spartanburg. Estie became sick and died of "Illeocolitis" only 5 weeks after Paul was born. I looked "illeocolitis" up. Crohn's disease is a form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which involves ongoing (chronic) inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. Ileocolitis is the most common form. It affects the lowest part of the small intestine (ileum) and the large intestine (colon) and causes inflammation of the mucous membrane of the ileum and the colon. Crohn disease causes small scattered shallow crater-like areas (erosions) called aphthous ulcers in the inner surface of the bowel. In more serious cases, deeper and larger ulcers can develop, causing scarring and stiffness and possibly narrowing of the bowel, sometimes leading to obstruction. Deep ulcers can puncture holes in the bowel wall, leading to infection in the abdominal cavity (peritonitis) and in adjacent organs. Symptoms are abdominal pain, fever, rapid pulse, anemia, diarrhea. Treatment today includes medications that are anti-inflammatories, immune suppressors, or antibiotics. Surgery can be necessary in severe cases. Back then, they didn't have treatment and Estie died. The family story is that the officials wanted to do an autopsy. An autopsy, back then, was considered desecrating a Christian body and the Reese parents were against it and just wanted to take her home. So they were issued SC State Board of Health Physician's and Coroner's Certificate and Transportation of Corpse.

"B.B. Reese is hereby authorized to accompany said remains. Signed H.C. Health Officer or Sec'y Board of Health"

I don't know where Estie is buried at this point.

His son, Paul, said that his Father never got over the death of little Estie. Years later, he was suppose to help Paul with a funeral for a child but it was too much for him and Paul did it virtually by himself after all. He was such a kind hearted and gentle man. His rather passive nature contrasted with Lillian's, and they often had conflicts. One source of contention was Bailey's tendency to sell their cow, when they needed extra cash. That meant no milk for their children. Lillian would strong arm him into going out and buying another cow.

The Reeses lived in Rosman, NC where Bailey was a Lumber Inspector in the lumber yard by the river.

Then they moved to Andrews, NC. They lived in a large 2 story house that Lillian loved. He lost his job during the Depression and he sold the house to get out of debt against her wishes. They rented a large house and the rent was more than the house payment had been. The picture above is of Paul Reese standing in front of the house. Paul, Louise and their daughter, Sarah, took a road trip to see the homeplace and Sarah took this photo. This house was just across the street from the Baptist church that they were members of.

B.B. Reese had a team of mules named Alec and Dinah that he used to haul lumber to the lumber yard when he worked in Hot Springs. B. B. had to move his family out of the mountains to seek work in the textile mills because much of the woodlands in the NC mountains was declared national park land, greatly impacting the lumber business.

They moved to Bluff Rd (Hwy 209 towards Hot Springs, NC, turn left on Bluff Rd). This was when times got tough. They would make a paste and wallpaper the house with newspaper to try to keep the house warm. In the summer, they peeled the paper off and washed the paste off the walls. To preserve cabbage, they pulled them up roots and all. Then they dug a trench and turned the cabbages in it upside down with the roots up. They covered the cabbages with dirt. For green beans, they picked them and strung them and hung them up in the garden. They called them leather britches. To preserve sweet potatoes, in the early Spring they dug a pit and lined it with manure. They covered it with straw and nestled potato slips in the straw. They covered with straw and dirt and let them sprout. The sprouts were planted. Carrots, turnips were covered deeply with dirt and left in the ground. Fruit were cut in slices and dried in the sun.

B.B. Reece was ordained 8/26/1917 at Zion Baptist Church in Rosman, NC. He married Grandmother and Granddaddy. He was also a Justice of the Peace. Here is his Bible and his handwritten Ordination Paper is taped inside.

Bailey was a deacon at the First Baptist Church of Andrews. After his ordination to the ministry, Bailey worked in churches on the weekend in Transylvania County and preached to chain gangs during the week. His other public speaking was limited.

The Reeses came down from the mountains to Marion, NC and went to work in the Clinchfield Mill. They lived in the mill village. Bailey Bright was the night watchman at the mill. They lived at 58 Virginia Road (or the house behind that one) when Eleanor Reese (their granddaugther and my mother) used to visit them. It was there that Eleanor remembered seeing the Jewel Tea dishes that Eleanor collects now.

Lily remembered when Arcemus Reese (son of Patterson Reese) came to do a revival and stayed with them. She said he preached "awful" against smoking. The next morning he went to town and got her some candy. He offered it to her and she declined because she had snuff in her mouth. He asked her if she didn't hear his sermon the night before and she said that she heard him preach against smoking cigarettes, pipes and tobacco but she didn't remember him preaching against snuff. She just chuckled over that. She said she was always close to Patterson Reese's family because they lived close and they went to church together. She was close to his children and spoke very highly of Arcemus. She said her Dad, Mack Coy Conner, thought a lot of Arcemus. Arcemus rode on a train to preach at their church. They stayed with Lily and Bailey Bright Reese in the house where Wilford William Reese found the little black collar iron under the house. The family still has that iron. Arcemus had a singer with him. Lily said she washed and ironed many a shirt for him. She remembered that Arcemus had a married son and the wife wanted a better home. Arcimus Reese mortgaged his own home so his son could build a bigger and better home. Arcemus Reece and his son both lost their homes. Lillian said that Arcemus wrote her a long letter after Bailey died and that was the last she heard from him.

B.B. was a member of Clinchfield Baptist Church when he died. Lily told how she remembered him sitting in his rocking chair reading his Bible or his Biblical Recorder. How he would fall asleep until the Bible fell and woke him up, then he would pick it back up and try to read some more.

Charles Bailey Reese (son of Paul McCoy Reese) told that B.B. had back trouble and walked humped. One day he was taking a calf on a rope out and the calf jumped a ditch dragging B.B. after him. This seemed to help his back and may have realigned his spine. Joe Edgar Young, Jr said he remembers B.B. gathering the grandchildren around and told a story about a black panther.

Bailey Bright and Lily were living with Rass and Gertrude Young at 50 (or 52) Virginia Rd when Bailey Bright died. According to his death certificate he was 71 years old when he died. He died 12/10/1949 at 7:40am and was buried on 12/11/1949 at Oak Grove Cemetery in Marion, NC. He died of cerebral hemorrhage due to cardio vascular disease. His doctor was Dr. L. William Hogan. According to Judy Reese, his grandaughter, he was drinking a cup of coffee and said he had trusted God all his life and was perfectly willing to trust Him from now on. "If we gonna go, let's go." While his oatmeal was waiting, he got sick when he was in the bathroom. He had a stroke. He lingered for a time but didn't recover.

Bailey had a series of strokes during the last years of his life. They were prone to occur as a major holiday neared. He once told his son, Paul, that he thought his strokes were brought on by stress related to the approaching holiday and the expectation of the usual large holiday family gathering.

Rachel Pauline Cassity was born about 1835 in Henderson County, NC to William Cassada and Jane Harrison. She died About 1879 in Madison County, NC. She is buried at Nelson Cemetery, Madison County, NC. I don't know why they are buried at different cemeteries. The name "Cassada" is spelled so many different ways and I'm not sure what it really should be. Here are the many different spellings I came across:

So this has not been an easy family to follow and I'm still working on it. For that matter, Samuel Bruce Ensley's last name has different spellings: Ansley, Ainsley, Ensly, Ansly, Ainsly, Hensley, Ensely, Endsley, Endseley, etc.

Samuel and Rachel had 12 children:
1) Sarah Katherine Ensley married David Ward
2) Melissa Jane Ensley narried William Fore
3) Margaret Alice Ensley married McCoy Conner
4) John Elmore Ensley
5) George Stokely Ensley married Jane Keith
6) James Harley Ensley married C. Wilde
7) William Earnest Ensley "Ernie" married Rinda Treadway
8) Arthur Van Buren Ensley married Mary Surrilda Reese
9) Charles McClelland Ensley married Susan Smith
10) Florence Vianna Ensley married Robert Maxfield Reese
11) Herbert Alfonso Ensley married Lara Cole
12) Louester Elmira Ensley married Ammons Hollingsworth Reese

Samuel was born and raised on his parent's farm in the Sandy Mush section of Buncombe County, NC. After he married, they lived for a short while in Sandy Mush near his father.

He enlisted in the Confederate Army on 5/16/1862 as a Private in the NC 60th Regiment, Co. F. He was detailed to the Confederate hospital at Murfreesboro, TN in November,1862, possibly for being wounded. He had rejoined his company by March, 1863 after having been taken as a prisoner of war by the Union Army when Murfreesboro fell on 1/5/1863. He was held at Camp Chase, Columbus, Ohio and released to the Confederate forces in an exchange of prisoners on 3/28/1863 in Louisville, KY. According to the family, he remained with the Confederate Army until April 1865 when he and some others decided to desert and join the Union Army. They were making their way to the Union forces when the War ended. Another recollection is that he participated in the Battle of Look Out Mountain, and brought a spent bullet home as a souvenir.
When Rachel died, he still had 8 minor children at home. The youngest were sent to the homes of the eldest 2 daughters and raised. Later, they lived with older siblings who had established their own homes. He died at 67 years old and is buried in an unmarked grave in the Flint Hill Methodist Churdh cemetery. His great granddaughter, Lillian Vianna Conner Reese, said that he was gone for 7 years during the War but did make it back. I have no explanation for why he was gone an additional 3 years (if the family story is true).

His great granddaughter, Lillian Vianna Conner Reese, had a few memories of him and said he was a "good ole thing."

Mary A. Rhodes was born between 1834-1836 in Henderson County, NC to Unknown Rhodes. I worked awhile on this family but was unable to find her parents. In the 1850 Census she is living with her brother and his wife, Eli and Sarah Caroline Roberts Rhodes.

At this point, I would like to insert the work I did on Eli Rhodes and Sarah Caroline Roberts family. I did follow as many of Eli and Sarah's children as I could and I have that information if someone wants it. Just email me. This is not my direct line (my direct line was his sister, Mary A. Rhodes Conner) but I followed Eli's family up to a point in order to see if there were any clues to their grandparents. I didn't find it but I may come across this later in my research.

Eli Rhodes was born 1/1824 in NC and died between 1910-1920 in Henderson County, NC. Sarah Caroline Roberts was born 6/1827 in NC and died between 1910-1920 in Henderson County, NC. I have not found a death certificate for either of them and don't know where they are buried.

Confederate NC Troops
25th Regiment, NC Infantry

The 25th Infantry Regiment, formerly the 15th Volunteers, was assembled at Camp Patton, Asheville, North Carolina, in August, 1861. The following counties furnished companies for the regiment: Henderson, Jackson, Haywood, Cherokee, Transylvania, Clay, Macon, and Buncombe. It moved to Grahamville, South Carolina and remained there until March, 1862. The unit then moved back to North Carolina and arrived in Virginia on June 24. Serving in R. Ransom's and M.W. Ranson's Brigade, it fought with the army from the Seven Day's Battles to Fredericksburg, served in North Carolina, then saw action at Plymouth and Drewery's Bluff. Mary A. Rhodes Conner

Mary A. Rhodes was born between 1834-1836 in Henderson County and died between 1900-1909 in Fairview, Buncombe County, NC

Her son, Mack Coy Conner's death certificate lists his mother as Mary Williams but his brother's (William Washington Conner) and sister's (Minerva Louisa Conner Bradley) death certificate lists her as Mary A. Rhodes.

If you do the math, Eli Grady Conner cannot be Mary A. Rhodes and Ervin McCoy Conner's son. Eli Grady Conner was born in 1867 about 5 years after Ervin McCoy Conner had died. But in the 1870, 1880 Censuses he is living with her and in the 1900 Census she is living with him and his family and is listed as his mother. Here is his death certificate:

Death Certificate #314, Registration District #58-00, Certificate #20, Grady Eli Connor (sic), DOD 8/29/1935 at Route 1, Marshall, Madison County, NC
Usual Residence: Route 1, Marshall, Madison County, NC
Male, White, Married to Mrs. Dosha Connor
DOB 1866 in NC, 69 yrs old
Occupation: Farmer, last date he worked at this occupation: 1933
Father: John Connor born in NC
Mother: Rodey Roach (sic) born in NC
Informant: Miss Venie Connor (sic, his daughter was Lavenia Conner) of Marshall, NC
DOD 8/29/1935. Physician attended deceased from 4/1935 to 8/1935 and last saw him alive on 8/25/1935. Death occurred at 10:30pm
Cause of death: Pulmonary Tuberculosis (duration since 1933)
Contributory cause: adenomatous goiter (duration about 10-15 yrs ago)
Burial: 8/31/1935 at Flint Hill Cemetery
Undertaker: O.C. Rector, Marshall, NC

I haven't been able to find this John Conner and Rhoda Roach yet. There are only 2 explanations for the relationship between Eli and Mary A. Rhodes Conner....1) He was illegitimate and his death certificate is incorrect (I have definitely seen that before), or 2) He was adopted by her after his parents died and they considered each other as mother and son. I have had contact with a descendant from the General Vance Conner (son of Grady Eli Conner and Dosha Thula Lankford) family and she supported the story that Eli is an illegitimate son of Mary's. It seems she met a man named Pryor and was going to marry him but he was killed at the end of the War too and she was pregnant when he died. She honored this son, Grady Eli Conner, with her husband's last name. My source said that this was not a secret within the immediate family and Eli was treated as a Conner all his life. Which speaks highly of the Conner family. Eli knew of his parentage and his mother told him that she was fortunate to have known love in her lifetime. I still don't know why his death certificate had the wrong parents listed.

I did notice that in 1870 all 4 siblings are living with Mary A. Rhodes Conner. They were young. But in the 1880 Census only Minerva and little Eli are living with Mary A. Rhodes Conner although McCoy and Washington Conner are only 19 and 20 years old and are unmarried (they both married in 1885). Why would they leave their mother, sister and young brother during such hard times? I found McCoy Conner living with a Reeder family in Madison County, NC (where he settled until the day he died). I found Washington Conner living with the Hendersons in Madison County, NC just 2 houses away from where McCoy Conner was living with the Reeders. He also lived in Madison County, NC until he died. An illegitimate child might have made the children of McCoy angry with Mary and Eli. Or is it possible that they were making wages somewhere else and sending money home? And in the 1900 Census, Mary A. Rhodes Conner is living with Eli as his "Mother" and she lists that she only has 1 child and 1 child still living. What about her other 3 children by Ervin McCoy Conner? This could be a census taker's mistake or some confusion on his part. Or does it indicate a rift? Evidently Mary did visit the younger McCoy Conner and his family because my Great Grandmother Lily remembers her coming to visit.

Mary Conner was Grandma Conner to Lillian Vianna Conner Reese and Lily remembers she "wouldnt' say harm of her but she couldn't stand her." When she would come to visit she would sleep with Lily and Lily said she would wiggle around trying to make the straw and feather ticking form around her. Her Grandma Conner was a good cook.

Lily Conner Reese also said that her father, Mack, left home when he was 19 yrs old. She said his mother, Mary, left a dishpan full of water while she went to throw the slop to the hogs. When she came back the pan was empty and hanging on the chair post. She got mad and it must have been quite an argument because Mack left home. This story makes the rift between mother and son NOT about Eli and his parentage but more of a "last straw" argument between a teenage young man feeling his oats and his mother. So I don't know the full story.

**********************************************************

Ervin McCoy Conner and Mary A. Rhodes had 3 (4) children (see above explanation):

1) Minerva Louise Conner (DOB 10/20/1858 in Henderson County, NC; DOD 3/1/1931 in Edneyville, Henderson County, NC) married W. John Mangus Bradley.

2) William Washington Conner (DOB 9/15/1860 in Madison County, NC; DOD 9/29/1939 in Madison County, NC) married Lydia Kate Fisher. Aka Wash Conner.

3) McCoy Conner (DOB 7/24/1861 in Henderson County, NC; DOD 7/2/1950 in Madison County, NC) married Margaret Alice Ensley. Aka Mack Coy Conner.

4) Grady Eli Conner (DOB 6/1867 in NC; DOD 8/29/1935 in Marshall, Madison County, NC) married Doshia Thula Lankford. Son of a man named Pryor who was Mary's fiance when he died in the War. Eli would be the half brother of Mack Coy Conner, William Washington Conner and Minerva Louisa Conner.
