John married unknown Sherbert or Shurbutt and had 3 children with her before she died, possibly in childbirth. In the 1850 Census of Union County, SC John and ? Sherbert's 3 children are living with her father (the children's maternal grandfather).

1850 Federal Census of Union County, SC Published by Broad River Basin Historical Society on 3/1993, Pg 57, Dwelling 470, Roll M432-859, Pg 32, Image 309, Head is "Zadok Sherbert" (The name may originally be Shurbutt, Shurbut, Shurlbutt, Shurlbut, Shubutt)

John Coan had married one of Zadok Sherbert's daughters. They had 3 children and she probably died in childbirth since little Nancy was only 3 mos old at the 1850 Census and they are living with their maternal grandfather. The children went to live with their mother's father until John Coan could get his life back. It seems he was living and working in a nearby farm.

John Coan married Mary Brooks in October, 1858 (Notice in the Carolina Spartan, dated 10/7/1858, pg 2)

Mary Coan (DOB 1/15/1819 in SC) died 1/22/1901 in Spartanburg, Spartanburg County, SC.

Nancy Coan lived with her parents and sister until she married John Calvin Jones about 1890. John Calvin Jones (DOB 10/1851 in North Carolina to James Lewis Jones and Jemima Jane Brooks) had married Sarah Elizabeth Huskey (1852-1888). They had 3 sons that I'm aware of: Andrew Pittman Jones, John Bunyon Jones and James Lewis Jones. Sarah died and John Calvin Jones married Nancy Coan. They did not have any children but she raised his boys. Cansada lived with her sister and brother-in-law after their father and stepmother died.

It seems that William Cowan is NOT the same William Cowan with Mary Otts and the Otts family is not related to our Cowans.

A big thank you to all who post their ancestors on the Internet and who do so much good work to publish things freely for all! It gives those of us who search some great tips and leads and missing puzzle pieces. One of those, who helped me recently on this family line is David T. Bunton from Arkansas.
