The second regiment so formed was numbered as the Thirteenth South Carolina volunteers, and elected the following officers;

Right now I think that John Cowan was married to Zadok Sherbert's daughter and when she died (probably in childbirth because the baby is only 3 months old) he left the children with her father and sister-in-law and her children while he worked nearby.  William Cowan is John's father.

At first I couldn't find a death certificate for Susan Ann Quinn Coan Fowler. But I found out she married for a 3rd time. According to her brother, Rev. James Wofford Quinn's (DOB 12/25/1854 in Fairfield County, SC; DOD 10/10/1936 in Cherokee Springs, Spartanburg County, SC) obituary, she was "Mrs. Susan Littlejohn". She was married to M. Littlejohn when she died.

Rev. James W. Quinn (this James W. Quinn was the brother of Susan Ann Quinn Coan Fowler Littlejohn) there is a grave site at Cannon's Camp Ground United Methodist Church. for Rev. James W. Quinn, born December 25, 1855 and dec'd Oct. 10, 1936. His obituary states that he lived in Cherokee Springs. He was not a member of Cannon's Camp Ground United Methodist Church and I cannot read the name of the church he belonged to. He was survived by his wife, Jane McAbee Quinn and children:
C.W. Quinn, Travelers Rest;
Claude Quinn, Cross Anchor;
W. C. Quinn, Cross Anchor;
B.E. Quinn and Mrs. C.B. Huggins, Spartanburg, S.C.
also, Mrs. J.D. O'Sullivan of Cherokee Springs

He had three sisters:
Mrs. Molly Linder Wallace of Cherokee Springs
Mrs. Susan Littlejohn of Cowpens
Mrs. Nan Morrow of Gaffney
It states he had 48 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Following grandsons were pallbearers:
Grady Quinn
Zeb Quinn
Paul Quinn
Dorrus Quinn
Jerry O'Sullivan
Ernest O'Sullivan

Then I was able to find her death certificate.

I have not been able to find Will and Kate in the 1920 Census. I have looked under every spelling I could think of and searched by Kate and their children's name and haven't been able to find them. I did find that William Cohen was living on Moore St., Union, SC in the 1920 Union City Directory. I searched page by page until I found Moore St. and still didn't find them. I will continue to search.

I found myself at an impasse with finding my husband's great grandfather's family. No one seemed to know any further back. Face it, "William" is a pretty common name and the "Cohen" was an adaptation of "Coan/Cowan" that I didn't know about. But someone contacted me and told me who his parents had been and that they were buried at Zion Hill Baptist Church. I happen to live not a block away from that church!! What a coincidence! And that gave me the names and dates of birth and death to sniff my way back through 3 more generations. Thank you, Sammy Clark.
