Mack "Mac" Coy Conner and Margaret Alice Ensley

McCoy Conner, aka Mack Conner, married Mary A. Rhodes and they had a son named
McCoy Conner, aka Mack or Coy Conner, and he married Margaret Alice Ensley and they had a daughter named
Lillian Vianna Conner and she married Bailey Bright Reese and they had a son named
William Wilford Reese and he married Geneva Margaret Lamb, aka Ginny, and they had a daughter named
Eleanor Elaine Reese and she married William Avery Huneycutt and they had ME!

This couple are my great great grandparents. They are holding my Great Grandmother Lillian Vianna Conner Reese.

Mack Coy Conner was born 7/24/1861 in Henderson County, NC to McCoy Conner and Mary A. Rhodes. At this time I believe the elder McCoy was actually Ervin McCoy Conner and the younger McCoy may have been McCoy Conner, Jr. but in the 1870 Census he was living with his mother and siblings and he was called "William". So he may have been William McCoy Conner. On the other hand, his brother, William Washington Conner was definitely "William Washington Conner" (as per his death certificate) but he was called Washington or Wash Conner and was so listed in the 1870 Census, so I don't believe she would have named both sons "William". It may have been a mistake on the census takers part.

The younger McCoy Conner married Margaret Alice Ensley (DOB 10/10/1859 in Madison County, NC; DOD 12/2/1938 in Bluff, Madison County, NC) in 8/3/1885 in Madison County, NC. The younger McCoy Conner died 7/2/1950 in Madison County, NC. They are both buried at Zion Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, Bluff, Madison County, NC.

Mack was the son of Ervin McCoy Conner (DOB about 1839-1840 in NC; DOD 4/7/1862 in Wilson Hospital, Wilson, Wilson County, NC) and Mary A. Rhodes (DOB 1834-1836 in Henderson County, NC; DOD 1900-1909 in ?, NC). Ervin McCoy Conner enlisted at the age of 22 yrs old as a Private in the 25th NC Regiment on 7/4/1862 in Wilson Hospital, Wilson, Wilson County, NC. McCoy Conner and Mary had at least 4 children: Mack Coy Conner, William Washington Conner (9/15/1860-9/29/1939), Minerva Louisa Conner (10/20/1858-3/1/1931) and Grady Eli Conner (6/1867-8/29/1935).

Lillian Conner Reese remembered her Grandmother Mary. She said she was a good cook but she was a big woman and when she came to visit she slept with the kids. She would wiggle around on the straw mattress to make a spot big enough for her and it messed up the hollows the children had made. This aggravated the children.

In his younger days, Mack Conner attended some kind of political rally at a church. He was a Democrat. He was standing outside the church listening at the window. The speaker said something like, "You'll never find a man as fine as ________." Great Great Grandpa Mack yelled "You are looking at such a man now!" He disrupted the meeting and he had to leave so he wouldn't be arrested for disturbing the peace. They moved to Ohio to avoid being arrested. Their daughter, Minnie Conner, was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. While in Ohio, a woman was murdered and the description of the murderer fit Great Great Grandpa Conner and he was new in the area. One of the witnesses said there was a scar on the murderer's face and Mack didn't have a scar. Also the sheriff called back to Marshall and they gave him a good character reference and told him he could come on back home. If it hadn't been for that scar and his good reputation he could have been hung for a murderer.

Mack C. Conner was born in Henderson County, NC. His daughter, Lillian, said his Father, her Grandfather, (Ervin McCoy Connor) had a big farm. When he left to go in "service" in the Civil War, he left his land, livestock, etc. and never came back. He died in a short time after enlisting in the War of "fever".

Lillian said that her father, Mack, left home when he was 19 years old because his mother was washing dishes and left the dishpan full of water while she went to throw the slop to the hogs. When she came back the pan was empty and hanging on the chair post. She got mad, they fussed and he left. As you saw from the 1880 Census of Madison County, NC (above), he was living with a Reeder family and his brother, Washington Conner, was living 2 homes away with the Henderson family.

Mack, was a carpenter and this made it so hard on Lillian. He would make sure the crops got in but she and the younger children were responsible for working the fields. She said her father made their log house. She said she didn't know why he built it the way he did with a breezeway. She said, "You had to walk through the snow to get to the kitchen." She said he would get up about 4:00am and the rest of them started their day about 5:00-5:30am.

Mac used to curse a lot until baby Lillian started saying the bad words. Alice Ensley Conner would spank her and told Mack Connor it wasn't right for Lillian to get spanked for every time he cursed so he stopped. Lillian said she never heard him curse and never saw him drink. She remembered the worst thing was when he and some men were talking about the Oddfellows Boy's Home. Mack said someone had taken some family's two boys there and what he said made one man mad. He jumped up and said that wasn't true and shut up. Mac replied he'd say what he wanted to and started to get up but the man hit him on the head. They tussled and John Baldwin stepped between them and stopped it. Mack went to the creek to wash his face and saw the blood. He came back and told the man he would settle this later. When he got home, Lilly was sewing and Margaret Alice Ensley Conner was outside. Lily saw the blood and asked what had happened and he told her. She said he was so mad she thought he would die. He reached to get his gun off the wall and she ran and grabbed his arm and started saying, "No, Daddy, you can't kill him for you'll be running the rest of your life." Margaret Conner came in and helped stop him.

My cousin, Sarah Reese Kelly said..."When I was a child, our family went to visit my Great Grandpa Conner. I don't remember much about him or his wife, but I do remember that they lived high on top of a mountain. It seemed very isolated to me. We couldn't drive very close to his house, but had to park some distance away and walk up a long way. At least it seemed like a long way to me then. I remember that they kept things like butter in a box in a nearby spring..."

When God sends forth spotless souls
To learn the ways of eath,
A mother's love is waiting here,
We call this wonder "birth".
When He calls home a tired soul,
And stills a fitful breath,
Love divine is waiting there,
This, too, is birth, not death."

Margaret Alice Ensley Conner and Mack Coy Conner. They must have been at a picnic. Notice the tall coconut cake on the table in left hand corner! Yum. See the jars of sweet tea next to the cake (before plastic) and the aluminum dishpan with something. Behind them it looks like an old log building that's falling down and covered with vegetation. Wonder where this was and what was the celebration? Is it possible that this was their 50th wedding anniversary? They were married in 1885 and she died, after a 3 yr illness, in 1938. Could this be in 1935? She had a stroke in 1935 (according to her obit) and the left side of her mouth is drawn down in this picture. Just supposin'.
