Interred With Their Bones by Jennifer Lee Carrell

Interred With Their Bones by Jennifer Lee Carrell
Carrell is well educated and has the background for a book like this. I learned a lot and enjoyed finding out all the Shakepeare lore. According to her "Author's Note" in the back of the book, a lot of the clues are true and this could have made for a wonderful story. Unfortunately, I didn't think Carrell pulled it off. I got confused in all the machinations and there were a lot of out-of-the-blue resolutions that were too convenient. Miraculous! The characters didn't sleep or rest according to the book and yet, jet-setted back and forth across the globe, which made them seem a little like paper dolls instead of flesh and blood. How they happened to get fake passports, plane tickets, suitcases full of clothes, money within an hour or two? How did Ben just happen to always be there (despite the "chip" in an antique brooch, I mean, every heard of logistics)? Every where Kate Stanley went, there was another clue that fell into her lap and people willing to help her. Ben, Athenaide, the Jimenezes, Roz, Dr. Sanderson, Maxine Tom, the Vergers, Mrs. Quigley, etc, etc... all handing out free clues and direction. It just fell too easily. Doors opened no matter what time of night or day they approached them. Like magic! And there were so many characters: Delia Bacon, Sir Frances Bacon, William Shakespear, William Shelton, William Turner, William Stanley Earl of Derby, William Herbert Earl of Pembroke, Philip Herbert Earl of Montgomery, Mary Pembroke Countess of Pembroke, Earl of Oxford, Sir Philip Sidney, King James, Earl of Suffolk, Earl of Northhampton, Theophilus Lord Howard de Walden, Ben Jonson, Thomas Shelton, Jem Granville, Ophelia Fayrer Granville, Dr. Fayrer, Mrs. Folger, Frances Howard, Francis, Nicholas Hilliard, Christopher Marlowe, and I could go on. As you can see, with all the characters (and many with the same first names) it was easy to get confused. I read through the whole book but floundered. Sorry, Ms. Carrell.
