**Note** See the quilts hanging behind them. This gave them a backdrop but also served to show off the women's needlework. It is obvious they are sitting beside a log building of some sort. Photograph probably taken around 1879-1880 before Noda was born in 1887.

Anderson Miller (aka Ance Miller) was born 11/1834 in Buncombe County (in a part that is now in Madison County), NC to William Miller and Mary Ann Glance.

The first census to list all the members of the household by name and age is the 1850 Census. In the 1850 U.S. Census of Buncombe County, NC Anderson Miller is living at home with his parents. On the same page is a Francis Miller who is 55 yrs old and his family. Is this William Miller's brother? Then there is William Miller (Anderson's father) and Mary (Anderson's mother), Anderson, Mary and Elizabeth. The next household is Simon Church and "Cate" Church. This is Anderson Miller's oldest sister. The next household is "Miller, Sam" at age 23. Who is this?

In the 1860 Census of Madison County, NC, Anderson is still living at home but his mother is listed as Head of Household so his father had probably died between 1850-1860.

1860 Census of Madison County, NC (Roll M653-905, Pg 317, Mage 47, Lines 29-40, and Pg 318, Lines 1-2 is "Miller, Marry" and family)

Anderson Miller married Cynthia Hickam Lusk. She had been married previously to James A. Lusk (or James A. Luck). She and Lusk were married 3/28/1857. She married Anderson Miller on 10/14/1860 in Madison County, NC according to the NC Marriage Collection, 1741-2004. (The NC Marriage Collection, 1741-2004 has her listed as Cynthia Lusk and Sintha Lusk.)

Cynthia Hickam was born 11/1841 in Buncombe County (probably in what is now Madison County), NC to Jacob Hickam, Jr. (aka Jacob Hickham, Jr.) and Sarah Hunter (aka Sally Hunter or Sallie Hunter).

In the American Civil War Soldiers database, Anderson Miller enlisted on 4/5/1862 in Madison County, NC as a Private (Drummer/Musician) in Company B of the NC 60th Infantry Regiment AND as Private in Co. H, 2nd Mounted Infantry Regiment, in TN. He would have been age 26 or 28 yrs old. He could not have been in TN and Madison County, NC on the same day. According to U.S. Civil War Soldier Records and Profiles, Anderson Miller enlisted on 5/4/1862 in Madison County, NC as a Private in Co B, NC 60th Infantry Regiment. And the U.S. Civil War Soldiers, 1861-1865, (Film #M230, Roll 27) as a Private Drummer in Co. B, NC 60th Infantry Regiment. He was wounded at Murfreesboro, TN on 12/31/1862. According to the NC Troops 1861-1865, A Roster, Vol XIV, Pg 519, he was wounded above his left eye and had his right thumb shot off (although, in the photograph above, taken about 1879-1880, it appears he has his right thumb). Between 12/31/1862-4/30/1863 he was reported "Absent-wounded". While he was "Absent-wounded" his first son, William Robert Miller, was born in February 1863. In May and June, 1863 he is reported as "Returned to duty". On December 21, 1863 he is listed as both "Mustered out" and "Missing-Deserted" depending on the source. In the 1890 Veterans Schedule (Roll 58, Pg 3, SD 5, ED 183, Lines 29-30) Anderson Miller and his cousin, John Miller, say they enlisted May, 1861 and were both discharged in May, 1865 having served 4 yrs. Anderson lists himself as a Drummer. The family story is that he came home and became a licensed Confederate liquor maker with his mill and still on Shut In Creek, Madison County, NC. Considering the 1866 IRS Tax Assessment Lists where he lists his occupation as "Spurts" (which may mean "Spirits"), the story may be true or, at least, partly true.

The 1866 IRS Tax Assessment Lists, 1862-1918, Pg 41, Division 3, Collection District 7, Line 16, "Miller, Anderson"

8) Iowa Miller (DOB About 1883 in Madison County, NC; DOD 1950 in Newberry, Newberry County, SC) married James A. Lusk. Buried at Rose Hill Cemebery, Ranch Rd, Laurens, Laurens County, SC. (Thanks go to Kenneth King for this photo and obituary!)

8) Noda Vesta Miller (aka Noda Vesters Miller and Noda Vister Miller) (DOB: 11/6/1887 in Bluff, Madison County, NC; DOD: 1/26/1919 in Hot Springs, Madison County, NC; Buried at old Antioch Cemetery, Madison County, NC) married John Edward Lamb "Ed" on 10/9/1904 (DOB 5/22/1882 in Cedar Creek, Greene County, TN; DOD 2/27/1939 in Marion, McDowell County, NC)

Anderson died between 3/19/1907-3/25/1907 in Hot Springs, Madison County, NC. He is probably buried at the old Antioch Cemetery in Madison County, NC because that is where his youngest daughter, Noda, and two of her children are buried. It's also where his wife, Cynthia Hickam Miller, is buried. Noda married Ed Lamb and they had a passle of girls. Noda's daughter, Sueda, died of the Spanish Influenza in August, 1918. Noda was pregnant with their last daughter. She had the baby girl and they named her Noda Vesta Miller. But Noda died of the Spanish Flu and the complications of childbirth. The baby only lived about 3 months before she died too. Ed took his surviving girls and his widowed mother-in-law down to Laurens, Laurens County, SC to work in a textile mill. They are there in the 1920 Census. At some point he brought the girls and Cynthia back to the mountains and left the girls in the Dora Lynn girl's school. He went back to Laurens. One of the neighbor's from the mountains had also lost her husband so she went looking for Ed in Laurens and offered to mother his girls if he would father her orphan children. They came back married although it wasn't a good marriage arrangement. Cynthia Hickam Lusk Miller died 10/12/1929 in Hot Springs, Madison County, NC. According to her death certificate she was paralyzed the last 2 years of her life so she was probably living with her daughter, Orry.

Anderson Miller's Will:

Madison County, NC
I, Anderson Miller, of the above named State and County being in my 72nd year and of feeble health but yet in my sound mind doth this day make my last will and testament to this my earthly heartage. First I bequeath my soul to the God who gave it and my body to the earth as it were deeming this to be of the most importance of all I have care of on this earth. I next will my wife my mill and property where it now stands to be the absolute property of my wife Cintha Miller for her only use and behoof for ever so long as she may live and at her death the property to be sold in a way and at such a time that it will bring the most and the proceeds divided equally between all my children and all my personal property to remain that of my wife's and all of my other property to be sold at a time and in such a way as it were bring the most money. And the proceeds of such sale to be equally divided between my lawful heirs. After paying all my lawful claims that may assize against me I also appoint, E. Lawson without bond my true and lawful Executor to carry out in full this my last will and testament here on earth given under my hand. This is the 19th day of March, 1907. Signed by Anderson Miller with J.R. Lamb and James L. Green as witnesses.
(The witness , J.R. Lamb, is also related to our Lamb's being Rev. John Rollins Lamb was the father of Elbert Sevier Lamb but he died in 1880 so he couldn't have been the witness. But he had another son named Lt. William Riley Lamb and he had a son named John R. Lamb born about 1864 so he would have been younger than Anderson and may have been the J.R. Lamb who witnessed Anderson's Will.)
